I agree, the shot is too soft for my taste.

This shot doesn't do that camera/lens combo justice, looks like it missed focus a bit. Otherwise, nice warm lighting and good composition.

Looks quite grainy. What iso was it shot at?

I have that camera and lens, I'd say it was a bit OOF...otherwise it would have been very nice

U saw little soft cuz I didnt bother to use processing post-photoshop.
I could use sharp filter on all photos.
I did use AF on one of couple's face before snaps.
I used Canon's "Portrait" on mode, 800ASA, F2.8 at 1/125- 1/250
All photos were shoot by 70-200 F2.8 L IS USM.
Let me fix this soft looking by use PS and see what happen.

With that lens, It shouldnt be that soft even without pp.

I dont understand why photo seem soft, even I aim and used AF on one of couple's face for accurate sharp before snapped.
I heard most pros use PS or Canon's software for post processing and get all photos look sharp or soft.
I just used PS for sharp this photo. It look different than my previous photo.

Do you have any other shots taken with the 70-200 and 1DMk2N? It might be that your lens needs to be calibrated because that combination should take absolutely tack sharp pictures with no post processing at all, as Char said.

Yes, good idea, I will test my 70-200 very soon. if test show my lens that still get same soft, maybe problem focus by AF then return it to camera store for exchange the same lens?

Well, first off f/2,8 isn't gonna be tack sharp, try f/5,6 or so, if the background, like in this case is far away, it will still be blurred out, but at f/2,8, i think you might have a too shallow DOF.
I never hold a 1D MKII N, but i can imagine that that monster plus the monster lens do weight quite a lot, so 1/125 - 1/250 just isn't enough.
at least shoot at 1/400 - 1/500 when handheld.
If not possible, grab a tripod
Was it like pitch dark?!
Because at ISO 800, f/2,8..you should get some/plenty of speed!

Yes, you bet, 1D MKII N with big len seem pretty heavy weight like a concrete brick!
I used a new camera like 1D MKII N, which was my available at this time only then later one week, my new 5D arrived. That's why.
I shot photos of couple during sunset like sun almost touched horizon of the ocean.
I didnt bring tripod with me cuz I wanted to test the camera without the tripod and see how photos turned out.

Well, you obviously need more speed
