I know this is not a rumor, however this seemed the most appropiate board. For either a 5d replacement or a possible 40d if either is announced in march, what are the normal timelines for being able to get one in your hands, including possible backlogs. I have a great trip planned for June and am trying to decide if I should upgrade my 10d to a 5d now and take advantage of the rebates, or will I have time to get a new product (which is what I would perfer) in time for the trip. Thanks for any insight.

If a 5D next gen is announced in March (and previous availability schedules still apply), you should have plenty of time to get the new camera before your trip in June.

After the Announcement is made, the product is usually available fairly quickly (i.e., within a matter of 3-6 weeks or so). There could always be "availability issues" during the initial release period since distribution to dealers might be limited. But even if that were an issue, you'd have all of March, April, and May to obtain the new body. Generally speaking, availability shortages might last a few weeks, but not months.

I'm sure someone somewhere has the empircal data regarding the Announcement date versus the first Availability dates.

That being said, the 1D Mark II was announced in January 2004 but was not available for a LONG time... I think it was March or April 2004.

The 1DMkIIN was announced in August 2005 and was available in September.
The 5D was announced in August 2005 and was available by October.

but prepare to pay top dollar for being an early adopter.

You will pay through the nose to be the first on your block to have any new model.

Why not get a great deal on the 5D right now? They are really dealing and the double rebates are terrific. The 5D is a terrific machine and does great work. I cannot think of anything about my 5D that I don't like. The 5D is also wonderful for landscapes - I've gone hiking in the Adirondacks with it and have been very pleased with the results.

there will always be a camera out there that makes you all :(

all you can do is make a choice, stick with it, stop bitching, dont look back, and shoot some goddamn pictures. thats my rough attitude. any top professional would tell you the same thing. if you want to take pictures on a 300D that look like they were taken on a 1DsMKII, then you should have the creative and physical ability to do so. nothing should limit you. so stop worrying about whats out there thats better than what you have, and start worrying about what you can make better with the machine you already have.

Hmmm. The man was asking a relevant question and I don't think we need to flame, do we?

The 10D he is using was/is a fine camera, but the body is what... four years old? Arguments about "the new thing" don't seem to apply in a case like this. His camera is approaching (or has passed) End of Life from an engineering perspective.

I applaud him (and others) who are seeking to upgrade their camera and continue to refine their craft.

got to agree with cdesperado, this was a little uncalled for. The op has a valid question, if there is to be new model releases with cameras with newer and better features within a short time frame why spend your money now and regret you did not wait a month or two for a product that should be better. And although better equipment does not neccessarily mean better pictures sometimes it does and having " creative and physical ability " cannot always make up for better equipment.

Thanks. It just bothered me that August attacked someone new for being interested in new gear, yet August is posting forum messages elsewhere asking for advice on what new gear to buy.

Say huh... what??????

I'm in a similar boat as WHANNA in that I also have a trip planned soon. My trip is in March, however, so I need it a bit more urgently.

It's not like WHANNA has never bought a camera before. He has a 10D already which means that he is somewhat of an early adopter so I wouldn't say he just bitches about the equipment and never buys anything. If it was the beginning of the 5D product life cycle, then I would say, "Buy it for sure now," but it's close to the end of the 5D life cycle, so why on earth should he buy something now?

If you've got a big trip planned in June, I would definitely wait and see what happens in March. If nothing comes, then you can upgrade your camera right before you leave.

I'm doing the same thing. I am leaving early March so I don't have a choice but get the 5D now. It's still killing me though because there are a couple of features which I would love to have which the 5D doesn't currently have. I'll likely give the 5D to my sister as soon as the replacement comes out though.

Since WHANNA has the luxury of time, I would say wait since we're only talking a month or so.

Thanks for the info, I think I will wait and see what's announced before I buy. My 10d is great and I will certainly keep it as a second body, and for my oldest son (showing interest) to learn with. I do believe the info and thoughts on this board are second to none.:)

You are very welcome Whanna.. and welcome to the Forums.

Just out of curiosity, where are you going on your trip?

Interesting, as I am in the same boat currently. I would like to buy a 5D for my trip coming up April 28-May 11 in China. Right now I have my 300D but really want to upgrade before my big trip. I will probably wait and see what is announced in March, before committing to buying the 5D. The wait will kill me though!
