Hi,
I was reading this forum for a while.
I ordered the lens and received it yesterday. I bought it from sigma4less but had to pay duty & vat so it was a waste of time...
I like the lens very much - and finally I can post some samples

Take it out as early as possible in the Spring, at least for taking pictures of willow flowers or pods.

Don't be too quick to put down the Canon! I would rent a Sigma for a day from your local camera shop (around $15) and compare both lenses under the same circumstances first. Then you can judge for yourself how they compare.
That said, I love my copy :D

I disagree. Unless you get a bad copy, you're sure to get better results with the sigma. So if you're in the market for a new budget lens, go for it.

Interesting, I don't think that my Sigma is nearly that sharp. When I zoom to 100% and look at the image, it's still a bit fuzzy, even shooting with a tripod. Still, I have some examples in Macro mode here :)

Some very good shots there - I think you have got a better shot of a bird in flight than I have seen *some* people post here with equipment 6x more expensive!
Anyway, has the OP considered the Sigma 55 200, or would this not reach quite far enough?

I don't know about that. I think I would rather have the 70-300mm IS than the 70-200 f/4 L. Both are the same price. The IQ from the 70-300 seems to be very good.

LOVE the samples on this thread, they range from very good to just plain staggering. I own the older 70-300 APO Macro Super II, any comparison or ideas as to where this newer version scores over the old? Certainly the macro shots are spectacular but I'm particularly interested in sharpness at the 300 end since my wife and I will be off to take wildlife shots in June. Candyce loves macros though- is the consensus that this lens is a lot better than the old?

Hi There
A newbie here so please go easy with me;) .
Up to now I've been using a Canon S3 IS compact camera and thought I'd venture out and get myself a camera that I can expand. Don't get me wrong, the S3 with it's IS system has given me some great shots but doesn't look much and you can't expand from what you get out of the box.
So, I've just bought a Canon 400D 18-55 kit and have been on the look out for a good all-round lens. I will be mostly wanting the lens for the front of concerts, but would like something that I can go and get shots of wildlife.
My budget is upto £400 and was wondering which out of the Canon 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS or Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO DG Macro I would get the best shots from for what I want the lens for? From what I've read, the Canon is about £200 more than the Sigma, but is this justified with the IS system if I want to use it for concerts? Will the glass in the Sigma be better because it's APO?
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers
Steve:D

I have had this lens on an XT for a year or so now. I really love it. I would always love some L but I could never justify the cost or weight. This lens is really sharp at both ends (for my needs). Here are two that show the overall sharpness and macro...

Two more for the record. I am now planning to get the 17-70 to replace the kit lens which I never use. The nifty is my kit lens for now, I just use the feet zoom out and in where there is room...
I can't talk this lens up enough for the price. And I really like the macro for butterflies and other such little flighty things.

most of these comments are geared toward the sigma 70-300 APO. But what about the cheaper, not-APO lens??? I just flat out don't have the money, was gonna get a promaster 70-300 for $179.00 but I see this Sigma bundled with a Sigma 28-70 2.8-4 for $200. I realize it's cheap, and cheap means cheap, but how cheap are these?

Hi,
Complete newbiew here.
I'm torn between the Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro and the Sigma 55-200.
The only thing concernign me is the softness of the 300 at 300.
I bought one today, with the premise of returning it within 30 days if it wasn't what I was expecting.
I've posted a couple of shots, here and at the end of the Sigma vs Tamron 55-200 thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=291362&page=12) and would love some feedback on the sharpness.
Please bear in mind, I'm a complete newbie! Most of these were taken at ISO 400, 4.5 aperture, or full auto on my new toy - 400D.
The shots are handheld and untouched, uncropped.
Best,
im33

There seems to a significant contrast between image quality from what I've seen so far, with the majority of earlier images in this thread from the Siggy looking quite soft and then some tack sharp contrasty images later on. There does seem to be quite a choice for 300mm lenses, I've looked at the Canon 70-300 IS, the Canon DO 70-300 IS lens, the Sigma, a 70-200 f/2.8 plus 1.5x convertor, a 300mm prime, have I missed any others? The siggy is definitely a good lens for the money, but I worry about quality control.. there seems to be a lot of variation.
From what I've read the Canon 70-300 IS looks a good buy, and certainly better value and I'd say equal performance or sharper than the DO version (which is about 2.5x the cost). I'd like to know what other options there are, do Sigma have any IS lenses or not?

hello,
I am looking for a budget zoom I can possibly lug around for a year to see how useful the range is to me before jumping on a Canon 70-200 F4 IS or 2.8IS (depending how useful I find it & cash constraints!)
I read in a couple threads that this is a great budget telephoto,
for anyone that has this, could you please post some shots you took with this lens? both good and bad.
Thanks

The 24-70 is that the Sigma 2.8 then or something else?
LOL The only reason I usually ask forduck / bird shots is I think they are fairly hard subject to get. I think they test the lens to the max but perhaps they test the photographer a bit too much!

I do, but there is no mention of the lens used, just one person commenting he is going to bring his sigma 70-300 to the show

@atlas. Autolevels maakt een hoop verschil voor je lucht.
@angeloonie, ik heb alles geschoten met de zelfde lens als jou, de 70-300.

I have had this lens for several weeks now and love it. It might be just a bit softer than I had hoped (that might be my copy) and there is more chromatic abberation, especially on the long end, than I had hoped for, but for my purposes, family photos put into DVD slide shows, it is just great.
I was at the Cubs game 2 weeks ago and got some nice shots. Sitting between home and third and about half way up the stands, I got this shot of a play at third. This is hand held. The second shot is a 100% crop of the first. You can see the CA is pretty bad in #2.

They let you take a long lens like that into a Cubs game? I didn't think most professional sports allowed that. As a Cubs fan living in Idaho - that give me some hope of going to a game one day and taking some shots!

There is no mention at all of cameras or lenses on the Cubs' website. So... I just carried the camera in around my neck and the 70-300 was in the case that came with it, hanging on the camera strap. They did ask to look into the lens case at the gate and just let me in, no problems at all.
Because the pictures were all hand held, what I am seeing as CA might also be partly motion blurr too. I am pretty new at all of this stuff.
As far as it being a nice capture, thanks. But, I always thought those great shots in the paper were due to great timing on the photog's part. Boy, "continuous shooting" mode does wonders for "good timing". Even at the relatively slow 3 fps of my XTi, it is a lot easier to get "the money shot". Also, you might notice the pics are a bit dark. There was a 1 hour rain delay at the start of the game and it was VERY gloomy all day.

If you find the F4 IS you can get it at a very reasonable cost (I've been offered 500 for mine) Not sure if that's going price used but you'd have to double that to squeeze it out of my cold dead hands) I've shot Clear and Sharp pictures at 1/8 at 200mm hand held. That's not bad imo. I really wish I had a local photog to actually go through my pictures though and really help me clarify if I am actually getting as good quality pictures as these ol blue eyes think I am getting.
Grr I hate it when I don't have time to read through all 17 pages of a post. imo

My Sigma 17-70 had a backfocus problem, which was resolved after I sent my lens/body in to Sigma.
