Just a couple of reasonably recent ducks:
Might've posted this one somewhere else before. It's less recent than the rest too...

i just picked up this budget zoom and i must say, it is absolutely an amazing bang for buck. focus is fairly accurate. motor is buzzy but fairly quick imo. 300mm shots are absolutely stunning for the price. Macro mode is really handy as well.
this lens is perfect for the "vacation" where you really dont wanna take the huge heavy white 70-200f/2.8L IS with you everywhere. nor would you want to have it stolen. its so freaking cheap that i could care less if it broke at the beach or got lost.
its also so small and light that it helps in the stealth factor.
will post pics.

I don't know if they will physically fit or not, but I can tell you that you won't be able to autofocus on most Canon bodies.
At 300mm with a 1.4X TC your largest aperture will be f/8, and with a 2X it'll be f/11. Out of the range of AF.

yes i quickly realised that too.
i picked up this lens and tried 1.4x and it focuses well.
the canon2x doesnt even fit:) but the kenko2x would probably fit but no AF

This thread is killing me. I had my mind all made up on the Canon 70-200 f4 non IS, then I found out about this lens. After looking at the pictures here I am asking myself "why the Canon?".
This would be my very occasional lens. Mostly for outdoors or with a flash. I would probably tripod or monopod it for long range shooting. I can't imagine using it indoors when I have my other lenses.
What do you think? I found a 70-300 Sigma for $130 used from a dealer. I also found a Canon 70-200f4 non IS for $400 from the same dealer. And I'm asking myself if the Canon is worth the extra $270. The postings here look every bit as good as the ones for the Canon.

hoosierjoe, i've owned the canon 70-200 f4L IS and canon f2.8L IS and this cheaper sigma now.
theres no doubt the canons are superior. i simply did not use the canons enough to justify owning it.. it sat in my bag for most of the year and only got used once or twice a year.
thus i decided to sell the canons and buy some primes which was a wise choice for me since i use my 50L and 85LII's way more than i ever used the telephoto zooms.
so to tie me over for the one/two times i really need telephoto zoom, i picked up this cheap lens which to my surprise fits my needs stunningly well. this sigma is in no way near the class of lens as the white canon's but for the occasional use, this sigma really does shine.

That's pretty much where I am at. I can afford the Canon's but to only take them out of the bag a few times a year seems a waste of a good lens and my money.
Thanks.

Kantjinin, what body u used to get this photo? any pp? I am asking because some people say that 300 and 500mm lenses are very soft and the colors are fade... So you have to be in luck to get a clean shot with beautiful colors.. That made me once to avoid buy one of this :) I was thinking then for 150-500 hsm (different lens but sigma and big mm range.. both) and changed my mind after.. :)
I see lots of amazing pics on this topic.. make me reconsider things.

Both are with my XTi, the first 149mm and I think I adjusted the WB a bit in DPP, but aside from that just added some sharpening and was done.
The same processing the second one was at 238mm. I have a couple others at 300 that look just as good, those are just the two I spent time processing lol.

And there I was considering an upgrade to a 300mm prime.
Obviously pointless... ^^
I think it would depend on how much you would actually use the lens. Personally I don't use the telephoto all that often so I can't justify spending the cash on a really good lens. I deal with the lack of IS by pushing my shutter speeds. Usually obtained by pushing the ISO to 400 since I'm shooting through a CP.
For the money, I don't think you can beat this lens though.
Stripped EXIF, but for interest: ISO 400, Tv: 1/400, Av: 5.6 @ 300mm

I probably use it around 3-4 times a year... so yeah, I was pretty crazy to even consider it.
But a CP ? Is that usable then, with the rotating front element ?

Of course it is, you just have to be a little more dedicated to use it. Once I know my focal length, and focus point, I rotate my CP to the effect I want. Unfortunately most of the time I have available to shoot is mid-day so I like to use the CP.

Sure. Just focus first. Actually, unless you're focusing very close, there's little movement of the lens anyway.

I am sorry for double posting these:
I took another couple of photos today and I am very satisfied with the results.
Please let me know if these are acceptable or if I am just not picky enough.
These were taken in cloudy weather, handheld.
Tamron on the 1000D at 300mm x 1.4 = 420mm (672mm effective taking into consideration the 1.6 sensor ratio).
Used the auto mode JPEGS. Most probably can achieve better results with RAW and manual but did not have the time as it started raining just after I took these!
Untouched full picture (only lowered resolution for web upload).

It shows an element of the APO I dislike -> the redcolor this lense captures. Nothing that cannot be corrected with PS ;)

Hi. Most of the Sigma 70-300 pictures are AMAZING. I've done quite a research, aka I spent most of the day to find out which lens was the best to shoot sports and wildlife/nature and it seems like the APO DG Macro really pays off! I also found some negative stuff about it, like it's too ''dark'' for indoors. I saw some indoor sports pics and it doesn't look that horrible at all. What would you say about that?
X-Warrior
10th of August 2009 (Mon), 17:41
It's aperture isn't the most ideal out there - 5.6 at the long end. That's not particularly strong and you'll notice for indoor sports. It'll require a high ISO to compensate.

I guess it depends on the indoor lighting....I was shooting indoor soccer with a Canon 70-200 2.8 @ ISO 3200 and I still had to shoot around 1/200 and had some motion blur. I consider the Sigma to be an outdoor lens.

Ok, but it doesn't matter. I can always use my kit lens if the Sigma one does bad but I think wildlife and nature aren't indoors :D I'll be soon getting Sigma. These photos here have really made me fall in love with it.

Not technically perfect, but my lens has some sort of oil splattered (or other marks) over one of the internal rear elements which can't do overall quality any good, and my flash is knackered so had to rely on natural light - Dragons move fast so it was tight at times! However I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome!

Hi, Salma -
It's easy. Just zoom somewhere between 200 and 300 mm, flip the macro switch on the barrel, and you can focus much closer. It's just a mechanical stop on the barrel.
Some people have problems getting out of macro mode. Make sure you're focused in the normal range (to infinity, for example), then you can switch out of macro. If you're focused at close distances the switch won't move.

This was a lucky shot handheld; I normally need a really fast shutter speed at 300mm with this lens to prevent camera movement blur. This is a 100% crop; the EXIF data is intact in the posted image.
