This was my first lens. I thought I would write a review. I actually had a good copy back in early 2009. I sold it 1 week later cause I was silly enough to think I shouldn't have a Sigma lens and should only have Canon. I had both the 55-250 IS canon lens and this Sigma. My 55-250 IS was a good copy, so can't really go wrong with that route. But if you find this lens for $cheap I really liked mine. My copy was perfect. No focusing issues(but very loud). I could actually hand hold at 1/30 somehow with good results. I think I used it at 1/60 with very good results. Now looking back, I am surprised at the nice pics I have printed out with this lens in 8 x 10.
Did anyone here switch to the OS version? I heard it was so-so. Maybe I will try it, I need a zoom.

Very nice! I think this lens is a nice match for the 350D. :)

Thanks stsva, however I think this lens definitely benefits from the more advanced autofocus of later cameras (all those were manual focus).
Another thing about my lens is that one of the final elements is splattered with oil or some sort of other defect :(...

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u270/olly-k/Fungus.jpg

Not sure how detrimental this is to my images but obviously it can still perform!

The lense is ok. I find it a little soft for my tastes when close to 300mm. I'm thinking of selling it and getting a Sigma 150-500mm Bigmos sometime this summer.

I find a fast shutter is required to get sharp hand-held shots. Like your squirrel, thats 1/250 at effective focal length of 238*1.6=380. So you'd want a shutter around 1/400 or 1/500.

I'm thinking of upgrading soon and would be interested to see results if anyone has used it on a 5D. I did a search, but it didn't seem to come up with a definitive answer. Couldn't find anything that said you *can't* use it on a 5D, but also no samples of it with a 5D. I just don't use this focal length enough to justify stepping up to something like the 70-200 f/4L. I got a sharp copy of this lens and I'd love to keep it. I appreciate the help.

Two more for the record. I am now planning to get the 17-70 to replace the kit lens which I never use. The nifty is my kit lens for now, I just use the feet zoom out and in where there is room...

I can't talk this lens up enough for the price. And I really like the macro for butterflies and other such little flighty things.

wow i love the 2nd one. It reminds me of Half-life 2

I really think that Sigma APO 70-300mm F/4-5.6 DG MACRO is a clear winner over Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro Lens it its low budget telezoom lens....

With all these amazing pics from Sigma 70-300, i am gonna get one tomorrow !!

Nice first tries Anand, you've done a good job at getting a shallow depth of field! You obviously have a good copy. I have this lens too, and for it's money, it's an excellent lens. But, at longer focal lengths, image stabilisation really would be a nice-to-have.

Yes, at longer focal lengths, I feel very shaky; lots of breath control, body control and fast shutter speeds help for me!!:)

Just ordered one of these from the classifieds... can't believe how cheap you can get them compared to what I paid for my Pentax version a few years ago.

Here are a few shots from the Pentax version:

I bought a sigma canon mount lens 70-300mm APO DG two days ago. It is new. There seems to be a problem with the 60D reading the manual focus switch wrong. When I flip the lens from AF to M, the camera's display goes wonky. The one shot and manual focus indicators blink intermittently and very fast. I switch the lens back to AF and all is fine. Today 7 Aug 2011, I was transporting the lens and camera with the MF activated, the camera was turned off and then all of a sudden it came on while the camera knob was in the OFF position. I've contacted Sigma and Canon, was just wondering if you guys knew what was up or if anyone experienced the same problem. Otherwise, I think I like the lens.

Hi all,

I found this forum a couple of days ago when I was considering to by the sigma 70-300mm and I admit I was convinced by the pictures posted here.

Tonight I got my first picture using this lens so I figured I should share as well

It's a fine lens for macro shots. Indeed it'll do 1:2, good enough for flowers or larger insects.

All shot with JPEG. just started taking pics full time in raw just today -_-

I think quite impressive for a lens I paid $110 for (like new). New on amazon is $170 I believe....still way cheaper than a used 70-200 f4l (around $550) which cost about 2x more when it came out new?

is it best to stay under like 200mm with this lens for best sharpness?

I just shot a bluejay hand-held at like 300mm--probably why it didn't come out as sharp as I'd like. Was shot in RAW though, so I'll see what I can do in post.

It's not too bad to spray and pray at 200mm hand-held though.. but maybe 300mm is a little excessive

handheld at 300mm, macro mode, about 4-5 feet away from the squirrel right outside my window, no image stabilization :( I wish I had at least taken this at 200mm and then I would have easily been able to crop it. I think this 70-300mm lens is softest at 300mm D:

Look at this incredible shot by someone with this lens..! handheld with a nikon d300... older than T1i, right? He shot it around 200mm and cropped it. He highlighted "NOT MACRO" in the title...is this lens by chance sharper with non-macro mode?

I doubt it. The macro switch is merely a limiter, allowing closer focus when extended. It doesn't affect the glass itself.

The problem here is almost certainly the handheld part (although the leaf on the top right looks fairly sharp, so maybe it was missed focus rather than motion blur). This lens is not overly sharp at 300mm for "regular" shots compared to some other 300mm lenses, but when used for closeup "macro" shots my experience was that it was very sharp at 300mm, assuming a high enough shutter speed could be used to eliminate camera motion blur. What was your shutter speed for this shot?

Also, please delete other people's images from your post unless they have given you permission to use them.

Yeah, the problem is that I was spraying and praying -- which is all i could do from about 5 feet away in macro mode. I think I could have lessened the problem if i had shot at maybe 200mm. I'm more sad about another photo where the squirrel was looking straight at me and obviously has more motion blur issue :(

I think I shot it at.....1/100 or so :( a newb error

I talked to the guy on flickr, but didn't ask him specifically if i could post it. Now i have - thanks for letting me know---I'll take it down shortly if he doesn't replay soon.

I've had this lens for quite some time and never had the results given here....I'll work on it now that I see what it's supposed to be capable of. Question for you users.... Does this lens have a sweet spot as far as "F" goes? The 150-500 has an F8 sweet spot.... how about this lens?

hyogen

I think most lenses have sweet spot around f8 but i like my results with any fstop on this lens for the most part

I'm a newbie to dslr photography am confused about this lens so apologies if I am just being stupid here. I've been looking at it on amazon and there appears to be 2 versions one with the APO that everyone is recommending and one with optical stabilization. Does the one with the optical stabilizer also feature this APO because this is the one I am considering buying even though its £148 more expensive than the APO version.

hyogen
28th of December 2012 (Fri), 12:47
can you link me to the one you're wanting to buy? This APO one is about $150 new nowadays. I think it was closer to $350 when it first came out a few years ago. I got mine used for $110. It doesn't have image stabilization which would be pretty handy. From what I've read the APO version of this lens *is* an improvement over the one before it (non-APO, non-Image stabilization)....but also I've read that it's not a "true" APO lens, either.

Here's a link to the os version of this lens from amazon uk.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002M3SOQU/ref=s9_simh_gw_p23_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-3&pf_rd_r=18C6P6KBT6RYBRNV7VSV&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=317819927&pf_rd_i=468294

and here is the link to the APO version also from amazon uk

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000ALLMI8/ref=s9_simh_gw_p23_d0_i5?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=17T3W18W4CN8R4942VNK&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=317828027&pf_rd_i=468294

I have to say though that after reading all the messages in this thread again and looking at the great pictures I am leaning towards the non os version. I have a tripod so probably would be ok without the os version I think.

i think you'll be fine without the IS also. Just use a fast enough shutter speed.. also look up the left eye focus method which really helps you to hold the camera much more still--I use the method (shoulder brace) but still use my right eye :)

dundeebirder
9th of January 2013 (Wed), 15:38
No I haven't tried any macro shots yet. I'm not expecting too much from the macro function tbh I really got it for the 300mm. I think I'd rather save up and get a proper 1:1 macro lens before I start doing macro stuff.

I really didn't think too much about anything before taking this shot. I'd just got the lens and put it on and saw the dog sitting so just took it on the settings as they were. Looking at the image data now and I see the picture was taken at f4. I dont know too much about f stops and depth of field yet because I am still learning but I will try again with other f stop stettings and see what difference, if any, the changes make.

hyogen
10th of January 2013 (Thu), 03:29
The higher the f stop you'll generally get sharper photos to a point. A lot of lenses have an optimal f stop around f8-11.

Higher the fstop you'll get larger dof (depth of focus)...so more will be in focus

dundeebirder

Thanks for that tip hyogen. Like I said I will take more pictures at different f stops and compare.

no problem. I think DoF might actually mean depth of field like you said-- instead of focus. It makes more sense to me with focus :)

There's a pro photographer who has loads of videos on youtube called Mike Browne and he uses both expressions so I think they do mean the same thing at the end of the day. I'll post a link to his youtube channel in case you are interested. His videos are very interesting and informative I think and he isn't too technical so would appeal to beginners like me.

I have two low budget options for the t4i, the sigma 70-300mm or canon 55-250mm
sigma is cheaper, 50mm more range... so? that´s the choice ?

hyogen

doesn't the 55-250mm canon have image stabilization? You can find this lens for a little more than $100. I think you'll have to pay more for the 55-250.
