Ok, Did not see too much on this subject with searching. I have an old hp photo printer. I think the 1100 photosmart. I know that their old black ink was pigment based and color was dye or flip flop that. So their black and white pictures tended to have a purple haze. I am in the market for a new printer. Would love a wide format printer, but have spent way too much money recently and can't afford one of those.

When I worked at circuit city I always thought the canon photo printers were junk and always heard Epson were great printers. Now this is going on 5 years ago. What is the best printers for b&w prints. I used to develop black and white photos by hand and this tends to be my favorite format. Now, don't get me wrong, I do want a really good color print too. I will probably do allot more color prints in all reality. But, when I convert some pictures to b&w, I want to get the best prints possible.

I am not looking to get too expensive. I also like printers that have different ink cartridges for each color, not one cartridge that have all colors in it.

what is your budget. if you want a nice wide format (13x19) printer for a good price see if you can still get a i9900, you should be able to get one for under $300

I guess that would of helped. Honestly 200 or under. If i can get one for 300 and still get great quality, that would be a bonus. I don't need all the lcd screen and goodies. I need just to print.

For B&W specific printer, you want one with more black/grey inks really.
The i9900 is one of the best color printers, and is no slouch at B&W, but with it's single black ink cartridge it isn't really in the same league as some of the Epsons' fro B&W.

However Canon's two new Pigment printers offer more grey tone inks.
The Pro 9500 that everyone is waiting for has two blacks and one grey tone..
The iPF5000 has two blacks and two greys.

The LL review and others fo the IPF5000 have given solid reviews for B&W, ranking it at least as well as it's Epson counterparts. I suspect when the Pro9500 is available we will see similar results at a much more affordable price.
