Hello, For some reason I dont always see the images people post. I only get some of them. Does any one know the reason why?
Plus I dont always get an email, on posts I responded to.
Thanks

You need to make sure you post in the advanced mode and in the "Thread subscription" box, pick the email notification type that suits your needs.

Log In to both

http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum
and to
http://photography-on-the.net/forum

this way, you have cookies set to see all the pictures attached to posts on either address

Usually images externally hosted are always visible, even if you are not logged in

I have the same problem. here's an example of a thread it happens in:

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=266937

The second post apparently has a photo attached to it, but I can't see it.

I had the same problem with that one.
My solution was:
Right click on the red X> choose properties> copy the address(URL)> paste into the address bar> GO> this brings up the image to the cache. Hit back button and voilą there is the image embedded in the post

I have no red x.

The red X is just a place holder for the image. Sometimes I can't see them either. Thy moving your cursor around the area under My first shot when I got the Nifty: and see if you don't stumble on to the hidden X then try what I mentioned.

I've done that. It's as if there's no image in the post at all...

Are you behind a corporate firewall?
Sometimes the security settings will not even let you see the placeholders.

Nope, home network. Linksys router.

I just want to say that it doesn't happen all the time, it's only on some posts...

I have the same problem sometimes.

Try quoting the post and most of the time it will bring it up. Just quote, then hit back and it will be in the thread. Not sure why this works, but it seems to 90% of the time.

Same problem with that particular example. No red x. No image. Viewed the source, copied the image URL and pasted it into a new window, still couldn't see the image.

?????????

Tried it with IE7 instead of Firefox. Got the red x -- still no image. Only after pasting the image URL into a new tab could I see the image, and only in IE, still nothing in Firefox.

[Mods -- I pm'd the member who originally posted this image to let him know that his image is being used as a bit of a test. If he expresses any reservations about it, I'll gladly delete this.]

Still fiddling with this one. (Using Firefox 2.whatever the newest one is)

Here is an attempt to include the image in this post:

URL is between here --->http://collin85.smugmug.com/photos/120738610-L.jpg<---and here, but I don't see it when I read this in Firefox. I do see it when viewing in IE, even when not logged in to POTN, as the image is hosted externally, and wouldn't have the http://pho... vs http://www.pho... issue.

Went to the user's site (in Firefox) and had no problems of any kind with either URL. Loaded the image in question from above with no hesitation, but I still don't see it in my example post above.

If I try to go directly to the image at:

a URL prefaced with http://www.usershostingsite.url/imagename.jpg instead of http://usershostingsite.url/imagename.jpg

it does now load. If I try the url without the www and follow it, still no image.

I'm really good at gathering information -- not so much on a solution yet -- but this thread is turning out to be pretty good for my post count. ;)

Maybe if I have time tomorrow, and nobody else comes up with anything better, I'll try to throw a sniffer on it and see if anything jumps out at me.

FYI - using Firefox, here it is trying to link the image as I'd link any other image from an external site:

image should appear between here--->
http://www.collin85.smugmug.com/photos/120738610-L.jpg<---and here

I have a similar problem sometimes too. I can't even see the link to the picture when I view the source code. It's just strange.

This ain't the first time people have complained about seeing my pics on forums.

As far as I know, it's probably something to do with the 'allow external linking' feature Smugmug provides. I usually have it on 'no', meaning no forum links etc. allowed, however I'm not totally sure how it works - for some people they can see pics, for others they can't.

I'm just having it this way at the moment to preserve my account's bandwidth being eaten up, since I tend to post pics in multiple sites (including the high-traffic DPReview forums).

Regards,
Collin

Apparently smugmug doesn't play nicely with others when some options are selected, particularly others with Firefox (though it doesn't really work well with IE7, either).

I've removed the references to the user's personal galleries to reduce any possible impact on his bandwidth -- but if you're using smugmug and choose the configuration option the user quotes in the post above, expect a certain percentage of viewers not to be able to see your pics, or in some cases even know that there's a pic there to see. Exactly how many and why is up in the air, but the responsibility eventually falls back on the hosting site, and not POTN. Something in the way they are controlling access to your pics is not behaving entirely as designed.

There's something wrong with that URL. If I follow the link, I get:

http://photography-on-the.net/gallery/list.php?exhibition=13

instead. I'm pretty sure that's not what you'd intended to link.

Enjoy those pictures. They are part of Pekka's Galleries :)
