congratulations to the winners
and all of the participants
this was definitely one week were numerous ones could have been selected the winner, they were some very nice images
I was frustrated finding a "water shot" here in Toronto that I was pleased with because we are in the midst of "ice and snow"
so I went for the humourous angle instead
here is my "out-take" for the week

Congratulations AndreyD, an33sh and teekay
AndreyD, that is a beautiful lake and you made a great job capturing the reflections!
Many beautiful entries as usual. The winners and Boutty’s entry were on my top list.
There are neither sea nor lakes in Quito so I was working on a new sail for my Kon-Tiki raft reproduction with the plan of shooting it in a mirror or small water container when gabrioladude posted his beautiful toys. I changed my mind and decided to place my toy in real water… with the aid of PhotoShop :)
This is the full story of my entry:
Sixty years ago, Thor Heyerdahl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kon-Tiki), a famous Norwegian adventurer and anthropologist was in Quito planning to cut a few balsa trees from Ecuador to build his famous raft, the Kon-Tiki. As a curious note, balsa tree and raft translate to the same word in Spanish: Balsa.
The ancient vessel reproduction started its trip in El Callao, Perú and sailed to Rairoa Atol in Polynesia.
An Academy award winning film (1951), a book translated into Spanish in 1952 and the fact that the raft construction started here at home made the Kon-Tiki a favorite theme in school when I was 6 years old.
My Kon-Tiki (I mean the toy of my sons) is made of balsa wood and bamboo, as the original, and handcrafted by the same hands that nowadays build real sailing balsa fishing vessels in our sea shores.
It is just 22 cm (approx. 8 ½ inches) tall but with a bit of PhotoShop magic was moved from its bookshelf place to the artificial lake in ‘La Carolina’ Park in Quito.
The sequence bellow illustrates the PhotoShop process. From left to right:
The small model shot at home,
The original background removed and reflection added,
The new background and
Final result. :)

Heyerdahl sailed in other rafts after that, but the Kon-Tiki was the famous one, having a Museum with its name ( http://www.kon-tiki.no/Ny/Dok_eng/e_start.html?FUIComponentClass=%5Btype+Function%5D&FPushButtonClass=%5Btype+Function%5D) in Oslo. (Click Expeditions).
When Heyerdahl died in 2002, BBC posted his portrait with the Kon-Tiki Mask carved in wood behind him.
You can click the pictures bellow to see them bigger.

Excuse me the long post, but, as you see, the Kon-Tiki is a lifelong favorite at home.

Haiya folks! A great challenge of "Water and all that sails on her" indeed. Thanks lnk for the popular topic as displayed by everyone! Congrats to the winners - AndreyD, an33sh and teekay.
Too many favourites this round for me! Apart from the winners, Sara's - full of movement and energy shot, the perfect timing of nvidia5700's droplet (must try this one day - any tips?) and markubig's resort's reflection shot. Abat needs to give me a tip of how to get so close to the bird and the innovative shots of Frank and now sir rpolitsr's are on my top lists. Great story rpolitsr of the Kontiki sir, I enjoy reading it very much!
As for my entry, this would be the last shot of a dozen or so shots of the rower(s) practicing on the river under the bridge. Like Frank's, here is my different composition "out-take". Now, let's put our jackets on and search for the ice!

Great shots everyone and congratulations to AndreyD, an33sh and teekay - all convey great mood and feeling. rpolitsr - what a fantastic, creative shot. I can see why you like wooden ship models now. Some additional favourites are Boutty's rowers and Sara's gondola (Sara - I like yours even more with bottom centimetre cropped to remove the lighter blue thingy on the seat). What's next AndreyD?

Congratulations to the winner Andrey # 1
An33sh # 2 and Teekay # 3
they are beautiful shots
terrific entries from everyone and thank you to Leigh (Ink) for the difficult task of choosing
very interesting story about Thor Heyerdahl and Kon-Tiki Rafael.
you must all be very proud of the fact that the local balsa trees were used for such an exciting reason
especially when as a young child you were shown and taught about the adventure in school
having the treasured miniature replica there at home the man will always be remembered.
if he were still alive I am sure he would appreciate your comments here very much.
As a curious note, balsa tree and raft translate to the same word in Spanish: Balsa
amazing
probably rafts were made from the Balsa even long before the language gave the trees their name
:D

Congrats to the winners and to everyone else too! Thanks abat and Boutty for your mentions. abat: it's funny you mentioned the crop as it's something I always struggle with on this image. I have many versions of it. You're right though, it does look better that way. The reason I left it like that is because I think I was trying to avoid a square format, I don't think it suits this one. Or the original is just stuck in my head!! I like it as a "long" vertical and there are people sitting in the boat just below the blue sheet but I don't like them there! Anyways.....

sara, I hope you don't mind but here is one possible crop (and please let me know if you'd rather I removed it). Cropping and framing is very personal and I do still like the way you presented the photo in the comp.
It's good to think - "does everything in the frame contribute to the photo - does anything draw my attention away from the main subject."

Thank you friends for your comments about ‘my’ Kon-Tiki :) , I am glad that the time spent in PhotoShop and searching the web was appreciated.
For a nice conclusion on the theme, let me move from the Kon-Tiki to the handcrafters that make those reproductions. They repeat the small raft that they never saw and sell it to the local or foreign tourists, but they themselves build their ‘balandros’ ( a small sloop?), a 5 meter ( 15 feet) vessel made of three balsa logs, a bamboo mast and a single triangular sail. They also sell small balandros, and those are perfect reproductions of the real thing, including natural crotches on the poles that hold the sail canvas, the hardwood to join the logs and the way they tie the rope around them.
This is a beautiful 40cm. (16 inches) toy; it really catches the wind and sails!
