I went looking for my local Nankeen Kestrel the other day, and almost went home empty handed, until I realised I was being watched from a street-lamp. He/she wasn't happy with me getting too close and flew from the light to a nearby factory building (it's home is amongst an industrial area and shopping centre).

Actually, I just realised it's holding it's left leg up in every shot. I wonder if it's been hurt recently.

Very good shots. It might be injured but it looks healthy.

Yeah it's certainly healthy, and it was periodically flying off, hovering and then diving down to catch an insect (unfortunately I wasn't good enough at 400mm to catch any of that).

What a cutie! And quite different from the American Kestrel. I like #4 best :)

He is a cutie, and great shots of it. When magnified, it looks like it's missing some toes. Maybe you can get some more shots of it and see whats going on with that. :)

Surprises and the joys of wildlife photography. Excellent captures of a bird that has eluded my glasses. Well done Dale.

Looks like a tough shooting angle but some really nice captures of a beautiful bird :)

Greay shots of a real nice looking bird! I didn't notice the leg being held up until you mentioned in it in the post below. You did a real nice job of capturing this kestral.

Thanks guys. I'll definitely have to go back and see if I can get a better view of that leg. Maybe it thought it was a seagull ! :)

Very nice captures Dale. I have tried many times to get close enough to these guys and no real winners to date.

cool little falc My local Peregrine male favors a street lamp on a bridge to look over his river. Every Kestrel I've seen has been perched on a utility wire.
