Hi. I have a Canon Powershot Pro 1 and I loves it. I have been using the super macro mode lately but I have some questions about it. Can anyone help me understand what the super macro mode is doing? I noticed that I can't shoot in RAW when I am in super macro and the file sizes turn out much smaller than normal. But I'm still getting beautiful color and great focus and even when I printed a picture at a very large scale (I think it's about 1 foot wide by 3 feet tall, the largest they could print at my local photo lab) it still looked great.
This forum looks great by the way, lots of good information.

"The PowerShot Pro1 features a standard macro function that allows you to shoot clearly at just 4" from your subject. It also incorporates a new Super Macro Mode that takes you in even closer. Position your subject as little as 1/2" from the tip of the lens and capture a full 8 megapixels of astonishingly close detail."

This what Phil Askey describes the macro modes as in his review on Dpreview.com
"Macro Focus
Switches between normal and macro focus modes:
• Normal (focus range at wide angle 50 cm - Infinity)
• Macro (focus range at wide angle 10 - 50 cm)
Note that you can also select 'Super Macro' from the camera menu which provides focusing as close as 3 cm with a locked zoom."

The Powershot Pro1 will not capture full 8Mp in supermacro mode, only the normal macro mode, in supermacro it goes down to something like 5mp, cant remember exactly now but I know its not 8mp..

Not wanting to chase you off this site but the Pro 1 has it's own dedicated forum that you might like to look at, you might find more in depth explanations of you questions, they might even have a FAQ section; I haven't looked there for a while.

We can offer a little help while you are here though ;-)
The Pro1 when in Supermacro mode can only shoot in jpeg mode at 5Mp max, Raw mode isnt supported so you really have to make sure that whitebalance & exposure are spot on as you lose the freedom that raw gives, this is a big flaw with the Pro1 but at least it can do supermacro right?
So that explains why your file sizes are smaller, supermacro turns the Pro1 into a 5Mp camera.
