View Full Version : GREAT HOSTS FOR EE

Please add to this thread info on hosts that have good price, great support, enough diskspace, good speed and ImageMagick and generally work ok with EE 1.5RC2.
I run this whole site (forum, galleries, sites, 15 domains in all) on Pentium IV dedicated server from http://www.ev1servers.net/english/pentium4_series.asp
Basically a dedicated server is a rented PC, which is totally under my control.
I will update to Dual Xeon http://www.ev1servers.net/english/xeon_series.asp some day :?

I've been using Superb.net for several years with their UVirtual Pro account which has more than enough space and all of what is needed to run EE. The UVirtual Pro account also allows me to resell hosting accounts to my clients at relatively low prices.
Let me know if you need more info or feedback...

At the risk of sounding like I'm spamming (and I'm not, just figured I'd add another option to the list)...
I run a small hosting business: Tengun Networks (http://tengun.net/). I use EE 1.5 and have a few customers who also do. The server specs are modest, but EE runs nicely. A new dual Opteron system is already in the works. :)
To anyone looking for a host, WebHostingTalk (http://webhostingtalk.com/) and HostHideout (http://hosthideout.com/) are pretty good resources. Happy hunting!

I've been quite happy with www.allenhost.com

email boxes, unlimited email aliasing to outside accounts, $6/month.
Whenever I have a question or issue, the admin (Larry) has always been quick to answer/help.

On recommendation of several of the postings above I have moved my homepage to Lunarpages.com.
Finally I got all EE features to work, and this new provider offers lots of webspace at a lower price as my previous host as well.
Just ask for a server which supports Imagemagick. I forgot to do this, but got to experience great service as well... they relocated my account to a supporting server within two hours after my initial question why ImageMagick was giving security errors.

Server Matrix (http://www.servermatrix.com)
If you are looking for a complete server to run, as opposed to just web hosting, check out Server Matrix. They will run you $80-120 for a respectable box, but the entire server becomes yours to do with as you please, except you can't walk out with it. I've been with them for 6+ months now and the performance of the network has been stellar.
You can get your choice of OSs (Windows, Linux, FreeBSD) and you can tailor a hardware configuration if have need special needs. They are generous with the bandwidth providing you with 1000GB/mo, which is roughly equivalent to running traffic 24x7 in one direction at T1 speeds (with bits left over).
Again, this isn't your typical web host solution but a dedicated hosting solution. You control the server from soup to nuts. The only thing you don't do is actually physically "own" the server.
Aaron
PS - I am not affiliated with them in ANY way other than a customer. I give them good press because they are a solid company with a solid performance track record. I've recommended them to many collegues and I have never heard anything but good praise.

I'll echo stig, I use allenhost and have been very very happy. I'm running 1.5RC4 on their server at the moment. I am having a minor issue with getting ImageMagick to work for me, but otherwise it has always been smooth sailing and the price is hard to beat.

People should know though, that usermode Linux really isn't root-account to a "real" physical box. It's root account to a "virtual part" of a physical box. And you share hardware-resources with many other "virtual users". I'm not telling you this isn't a good way to run a hosting company, cause in some scenarios it is very suited! Specially pricewise. But it's not a solution suiting me, so I pay more for dedicated machines. Just felt it was important to let people know exactly what the "drawbacks" of usermode are.

Hi Khaled,
Thanks for that. When I compare your gallery with mine (what is located at switzerland), than the speed is quite equal. When I look at the speed only with my subjective eyes (not measuring), than your host seems -if- only a very bit slower than mine. But this can be of course because the day-time. Another time, I guess, it is the contrary.
Hence your host with this lot of space seems very interesting. Thanks for this tip!

Currently IkonFoto.com (http://www.ikonfoto.com/) is hosted by WebHostXL, I was lured by their very cheap price and huge space/bandwidth offerings. How could I say no to 700 megs with 10 gigs transfer per month for less than $100 USD/year (including domain)?
But when the annual domain registration and hosting expires I'll be returning to ICDsoft (http://www.icdsoft.com/). WebHostXL's server goes down all the time, they don't bother to reply to help requests. I actually have help tickets that I opened months ago which haven't even been ackowledged yet.
By comparison ICDsoft offers 333 megs, 5 gigs transfer per month (for about $50/year, or $60 with domain), and has never failed to maintain their 15 minute response time to support inquiries in the several years I used them before trying WebHostXL.
ICDsoft offers a choice of hosting on servers in the USA or Hong Kong, so you can pick which side of the world your data sits on. They offer everything you need to run EE, and I guarantee you'll be blown away by their customer service.

If I can make a suggestion: check out The Planet (http://theplanet.com/). I just moved all my hosting stuff to a dual Xeon with them, and it's very, very nice.
They also have a better deal, for $50/month less than EV1: dual 2.8s rather than 2.4s, 300 GB more bandwidth, and a few other nice things like the 40 GB network-attached storage space.

dreamhost.com (http://www.dreamhost.com/rewards.cgi?blinking8s) - very solid, quicker support could make it an amazing host, but overall my experience with them has been awesome.
I have Code Monster plan with them, yearly payment of 19.95 a month with 1 free domain. My account includes 2560mb of storage and 64gb of bandwidth...its a pretty sweet deal for what i require, but all my website stuff is hosted at flashlevel.net (http://www.flashlevel.net)

I've just downloaded and trialled EE and it's my first foray into MySQL etc. so I went with a free host to start with - www.5quidhost.co.uk. Despite the name they do have a free package that allows 1 MySQL database.
I'm sure it's far too basic for most people on this forum, but for us beginners it's ideal to dip your toe in the water, so to speak.

US based http://www.ace-host.net works well with EE. The only difference from default settings is that you will need to create a user with non-blank password to access your mySQL database. Good performance, 24/7 live support, excellent value. I have moved my site http://www.fotodomain.com from self-hosted ADSL based server and have no regrets.

I signed up for the 2 year plan, it is the cheapest rate. I was up and working within 24 hours. Tech Support is awesome. They are located in Chicago and have 24/7 support by phone and email. In the last 6 months my site was down for maybe 5 hours, since they were doing a major upgrade and backup.
Here is some additional stuff which helps with EE.
PERL & CGI Support
Just Another PERL Hacker? No problem! Every single midPhase account comes with a CGI-BIN and unrestricted PERL capability. Per-request we can also offer mod_perl and we can also install just about any module on CPAN for you, at no additional cost!
PHP Support
If you like PHP, you'll love midPhase. Every hosting account comes with unlimited, unrestricted PHP access. You can use our pre-made scripts or write your own and if you have a problem debugging tools are available -- at no additional charge.
MySQL Databases
Every single midPhase hosting account comes with MySQL Database access. MySQL is the worlds most popular relational database and can be used to store information in an organized, and relative way easily and quickly. And since data stored in a MySQL database is stored in a Binary Format it is much more secure than storing it in a plain text file.
Your Own .htaccess
By owning your own .htaccess file you can modify the way the Apache Web Server displays and links to your pages. From password-protecting specific files, to using home.html instead of index.html, the .htaccess file is what you need to make the changes that make your site cool. Our expect support staff would be happy to explain the various functions of .htacces

After going to the mat with Godaddy for changes that crippled EE, I researched and found the valley of the geek hosts. :-) http://www.lunarpages.com are by far and away the most knowledgeable hosting group out there, their techs use what the user uses and communicate directly with you, not some phone operator searching for a stock answer...these guys know what they are doing and have a support forum. ProNIC Solutions (http://pronicsolutions.com) has been an excellent EE host for me. And not just for EE... so far I haven't run into any server modules they don't support. They also have the Fantastico open source installer interface with loads of tools. Pricing is better than we were paying with our previous host, and they are very liberal in numbers of databases, email addresses, subdomains, etc. You can get shell access pretty much for the asking. The support has been exemplary, and they are always glad to juump in and help with MX, backup or other perplexing issues.

Lunarpages rock! I was having problems with startlogic as the db was getting corrupted and they would not increase max_questions and db became corrupted.
lunarpages has no limit on max_questions or a limit on db's. they support imgemagick and gd and will answer all questions very quickly, all for $8 a month! no setup fee and they will credit some cost from your other hosting fees.

Lunarpages are great until your websites starts getting a lot of traffic and starts using a little more resources, then the dump your site and say, "sorry you will have to upgrade to the $50 a month plan if you want to continue to host with us"
Even though I was well within thier monthly limits.

That seems like a pretty outrageous statement for Lunarpages to make. Can you support your statement with some more facts? Do you have the exact text of what was said? Their terms are clearly stated. If they've "dumped" your site, it must be for a reason other than they want you to pay higher fees. If you're within their bandwidth (and other) limits, you have pretty strong grounds to contest such action.
I don't mean to blindly support Lunarpages, where I'm a customer, too, but contracts are contracts. On the other hand, if what you've claimed is true, people should take note.
Regardless, your claims need some more backing.

If you look around you will find that a lot of hosting companies do this, all wil have a clause about excessive resources.
clause or not, the first item that comes to my mind is what is the definition of "excessive resources"... the second item is "where have they written their definition of excessive resources"... the third item is "what, exactly, does it state"... and lastly, the fourth item, "where is their proof/logs of excessive resource usage"...
:confused::confused::confused:
elektrik
22nd of February 2006 (Wed), 21:00
Your site "utilizing excessive resources, causing a significant degradation of services on the server" is not the same as "using a little more resources" (from your first post). The numbers, both in what LP offers and what you use/generate, are really what matter.
There are several more questions unanswered. As wkitty42 says, what is the formal definition of 'excessive'? There shouldn't be any ambiguity -- either you use more or less than that value. If you're using more resources, and LP's threshold isn't abnormally low, then maybe you do need a more serious package. There's nothing wrong with that. Presumably, if you're generating that much traffic, there's probably an income stream (either from site ads or photo sales) you could harness to pay for the upgrade. Growing your site/business is generally a good thing. But you have to spend money to make money. It may sound harsh, but dedicated servers, with all their horsepower, exist for a reason. Your site would likely run better, and the other users on the lower plan would appreciate having the burden taken off, generating better performance for them.
Further questions are about EE's MYSQL architecture, and how its design creates system load. Is the process as efficient as it can be? How much can be done in EE's config to help keep the load down? Do your settings reflect this? I don't have these answers, but I pose them for discussion.
And are other users experiencing the same degree of system load? How have they dealt with it, either by configuration or upgrading their hosting?

I am just telling you my experiences, these are the types of games hosting companies play, what is excessive, well anything they want it to be.
I was also told that one of my photos, file_name.jpg was using 50% of a CPU, how can a jpg use cpu, well according to the hosting company it can.

1. Cost for setup of account (should be zero in my opinion)
2. Ease of setup / with instructions
3. Support: In my case there is phone support/forums of users (amazing)/ email/ live chat
Um ok then,
1. nothing
2. Submit the app, get an e-mail back with login details - has CPanel for setting up databases and PhpMyAdmin if you want to manually fiddle with the SQL database (cant think why you would)
3. A ticket based system, also has a UK and DC (USA) based phone number for emergency support.

Powweb.com is great but because I am so far away I think it does get slow. Pictures do no load nearly as fast as some other servers. I would like it if we could setup some "tests" to see which servers that have the best deals are also fast.
Been with Powweb since 2000. They have come a long way since then. Over the last couple of months, powweb mysql databases have been running extremely slow. So slow I ended up moving my site to a new host. The difference between the hosting speeds was unbelievable. Since yesterday, I noticed a huge speed increase in mysql database. Made a post on the forum and got this reply
We 've made a change to the manner in which the mysql servers are connected to, and all mysql-based sites should have experienced a decrease in load times.
So I would still recommend Powweb (http://partners.powweb.com/cgi-bin/click.cgi?id=JustJerk) or my new host Virtuoso Net Solutions (http://www.virtuosonetsolutions.com/affiliate/idevaffiliate.php?id=61)
EE gallery (http://trispunky.jerksworld.com/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=8) on Powweb
EE gallery (http://www.trispunky.com/tri_gallery/) on Virtuoso Net Solutions
There is still a slight speed difference but not as bad as before.

I used Powweb for a few years prior to them upgrading their mysql server. Up to the server upgrade every was awesome. I recently switched to www.ixwebhosting.com (legacy support) and it's been smooth sailing since. One thing to note about ixwebhosting, you can access your database with any remote mysql administrator making back-ups a snap.
Cheers

I am using dream host, and I can't complain a bit. their customer service is quick, and very informative. They offer a bunch of easy one click installs.
right now i have the code monster plan. usually 40 bucks a month or so, but everynow and then they have a sale, and i have it for 19.95 a month.
I started out at 60gb of storage, and 1.6tb of bandwith. My disk space grows by 480mb a week, and my bandwith grows by 16gb a week.
I can host unlimited domains, its a pretty neat deal if you ask me. check it out.
here are all their plans, http://www.dreamhost.com/shared/comparison.html

Great support, Great uptime, Support is always on the ball...
These guys have hosted my sites for years, bit more money than the dollar hosting company but they are not in that market anyway.
I would rather have a company such as ParagonHost that commits to no more than 250 clients per server than those dollar hosting solutions that have thousands of clients per server... it only makes sense from a business perspective.
Give these guys a try, great folks:

i can no longer recommend lunar pages as they have register_default=on enabled by default. you can turn it off with .htaccess and a php.ini file but this seems to be a problem with zen cart

Unfortunately I can no longer recommend Tengun Networks as a good host. I have had a lot of trouble in the last few months with various problems that appear to be happening as servers get upgraded and response time to trouble tickets and emails is stretching into weeks.
