Is this just human error, issues with the way I shoot and the lighting at that time or is my 10D "leaking" lights hehehehe This has happened twice always when it seems when I am shooting some what directly at the light source. Please ease my fear and worries. :) Thanks. Oh was shot with my 50mm f1.8

So.... you gotta UV filter on the front of that 50mm? Because that'll do that exact thing under the right conditions.

It is a serious condition indeed... one that may be difficult to resolve'...

It is known as......

Not having a Lens Hood

Thanks you 2 for putting me at ease, I love you both!!!

Yes I have a UV filter on.

And yes I didn't use a lens hood.

Always nice to have people with experience around.

Have a good weekend.

Ferdinand

And yes I didn't use a lens hood.

You should sent that picture into Art Bell's website.
They would have a field day with it!

Ferdinand,
Not having a lens hood CAN be a big deal if you get flare across an unrepeatable picture.
If you look at your 50mm you will see that the front element is well recessed down from the front of the lens body; this creates a lens hood effect.
If you then put a filter on the front of the lens body you take away that hooding and create a surface which can catch any light slanting across the front of the lens - it is this stray light which causes the effect you ar seeing on some of your photos.

Cure?
Buy a lens hood and use it when you have the filter fitted.
Or, take off the filter when the Sun, or other light source is in front of the lens.

Of course even a hood will not stop flare if the Sun, or spotlight etc,. is shining directly into the front of the lens. This can give a nice effect and is considered 'arty' by some...........and used as part of the composition as the aperture blades can give some strange effects. Try it and see.
All the best.

Art Bell has an AM radio show called "Coast to Coast" dealing with the supernatural:

thanks dtrayers.

Yes, it's actually a fun show to listen to late at nite.

But they get a lot of "anomalous" photos that are thought to be from "the other side".
I think this photo would be one of the better ones. Give them some story about hearing that someone died in the building behind the photo.

It might be fun to see if you could make a photo with some kind of ghostly flare. Stack two or three UV filters, shoot late in the day, shoot towards the sun. Find an old creepy house or abandoned factory. Maybe at night with the flare of streetlights.

And if you were successful in creating flare, you would have a better understanding of how to avoid it when you wanted to.
