View Full Version : 1/3 stop or 1/2 stop?

I'm curious what people are using. It seems off-hand that 1/3 stop increments would be better for finer adjustment, but I suppose that it might be a dash slower to adjust. I've had my 10D in the default 1/2 stop but figured I'd give 1/3rd a try for a while.

What can I say, I'm waiting for the missus to come home and don't have anything better to do...

1/3s are best, don't look back. 1/2 is not granular enough.

While I agree with LiquidMantis, I find it easier to go 1/2 stops usually. I don't want to think about trying to memorize all the 1/3 stop aperture settings,

But if you concentrate on either Av or Tv modes then 1/3 can be beneficial, allowing you to sometimes squeak out another 1/3 faster shutter speed or aperture. For "normal" exposures, I find that fixing a 1/6-stop under/overexposure quite easy in RAW development.

But that is cheating. :)

1/3

Especially when it comes time for exposure compensation.. why go 1/2 when 1/3 will do

I find that the E-TTL from the 10D to be very inaccurate. It over or under exposes depending on it's mood. So I use the +/- control to bias the flash exposure based on the histogram exposure review. Setting the camera to 1/3 stops gives me finer control of this bias and that's what has made me keep it there.
