My mother's got a nikon film (and a couple lenses) and has been hesitant about getting into the digital world. I'm also hesitant to recommend something for her since it seems that there's a hole in the Nikon lineup, between the D40 and the D80. Any thoughts as to whether they're going to bring the 10mp sensor from the D200/D80 down a price notch? She definitely doesn't need the extra features of the D80, but if she's going to be keeping this for awhile it'd be nice to have more mp than the 6.2 of the D50/D70. Thoughts?

.... you might get a better response by posting in a Nikon-oriented forum. I don't think many people here are very familiar with Nikon cameras.
We affectionately refer to them as "Noink's."
Here is one Nikon forum:

What does she use her pictures for? I made lots of 13 x 19 inch prints with my 6 MP D60 Canon. They were pretty respectable. Are you sure she needs 10 MP? If she never prints larger than 8" x 10" 6 MP is all she really needs.

new nikon news flash!:
PMA 2007
After years of failed attempts to lead the professional digital market, Nikon has announced plans to stop further development on Digital SLR bodies and will now focus on manufactuering lenses for existing cameras and will begin to also produce lenses with the invincible Canon EF lens mount.
