After getting some good advice, I returned to the court today. I'm using a Digital Rebel XT with the 50 mm 1.4. Both were shot at 1/400 f2.2 ISO 1600. White balance adjusted in Lighroom. I'd be grateful for any comments anyone might have. I hope this works out because this is the first time I've posted any photos here.

Not bad. Are you shooting from a seated or standing position? Try crouching along the sidelines next time if you have access. It makes the players look larger.

Thanks for the opinion. I was standing in the vicinity of where the 3 pt arc hits the baseline. Tried some from a crouching position, but one of my knees disagrees pretty strongly wih that.

That's usually where I am, if not under the basket. I still crouch, but my knees protest vigorously. I'll probably need knee replacement surgery in a few years at this rate.

first, these shots look underexposed, which shouldn't happen with that lens. even in the worst gym i know, f2 is good enough for 1/320, which stops action decently well. second part, you may have adjusted the WB, but it is by no accounts accurate, you'll get better with practice. third part, forget crouching, sit. you can't move as much, but you'll get lower to the ground, and you don't have to worry about cramps

I read on the sports shooters website that some are using those portable seats without legs that have a cushion on the bottom attached to a cushioned back.

I sit as a rule and after a long weekend tourny I start using a seat cushon... The reason I sit is that I get one team fo the first half and then the other team for the second half...if I want sefensive shots I will get my lazy butt up and move to near half court and then sit there for a while....LOL
Also, your WB is way off, at least on my monitor and they look too dark as well...dont get discouraged it takes alot of time and practice...keep working on it...
I personally think the 50 is too wide and not fast enough at AF...I like the 85 1.8 best....

You're certainly right about the 50 mm being too wide and too slow, but right now it's my best option. Something happened during the jpeg conversion to get them down under the size limit and they both look much more underexposed than they really are. I'm just trying to learn how to shoot fast moving action in available light. I'll go to a few more games next week. I'm grateful for all the advice I've gotten here.

I think that first shot of yours could look a little more "on" like this one I took two nights ago of my kid if you 1)cropped it more, 2)adjusted the WB and 3)noise and 4)made it larger. Alot of times just making it easier to see helps. When they are small pictures they dont look as good....

nice job on the photos. just a thought but have you tried going iso800 so it won't be as grainy? I usually shoot around 1/200-1/250 with my 50 1.4

Get the exposure right and the ISO isnt anything to worry about. A little noise reduction and they turn out fine...
