I am thinking of purchasing a 10d. I am an ear, nose and throat surgeon and will be using the camera for taking pictures of parts of the face as well as inside the mouth.
I would appreciate any tips about the accessories I will need - macro lens (which focal length), ring light vs. off-camera shoe cord and hand-held flash etc. Also, if anyone has any thoughts on using the bellows...
Thanks.

For that application, I think I would go with a double ring light for flat, even illumination and a dedicated Macro lens in the 90mm-100mm range, with a focusing rail. I think a bellows would be too big and bulky and hard to deal with. A Macro lens in the 50mm range would be too close-focusing for inside-the-mouth shots making lighting difficult.

I just took a closeup of my sons teeth for purposes of comparison. He is trying Crest White strips. I will take another in 7 days. I got fantastic result with a 100 mm usm macro and believe it or not, the built in flash. This may be all that you need unless you go into the oral cavity to the rear molars. I'm not sure the light would get back there but I'd try this first before you spend $600 on Canon,s ringlight.

I know this may sound silly, but don't forget to set your white balance the same for both shots. Otherwise, your results may not show reality.

Tom......I have my white balance set to flash and I did zero post processing as I will do with my next shot. If the results are good, I'll try to put a picture on here. No, I don't work for Crest. I teach Zoology at a high school.

I do intraoral and benchtop macro photography every day. The 10D is an excellent choice! Combine it with the F2.8 macro lens and the MT24 flash unit and you will be a happy camper . Good luck.

That's fine - its just one of those things that people often forget (voice of experience here).

I did consider bellows but decided against it as I could forsee them increasing the the amount of dust being drawn in & sticking to the sensor. I use a Sigma 105 EX macro & extension tubes.
