I'm wondering what percentage of POTN users are using phone modems/cable modem/dsl/T1/T3/etc., and what kind of speeds we are all getting.
Run the test from this link and post your location and results:
Java version: http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?java=1
Flash 8 version: http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?flash=1
If you copy the image link from the speed test to your clipboard, you will have to cut and paste just the image URL into the insert image icon of the message editor, e.g. http://www.dslreports.com/im/22651722/3410.png

I have roadrunner business class. Technically, when I straight plug in my desktop, it says "100mbps". However, my wireless router is limited to 54mbps, and with a huge house (more of a detriment than a help) and me being in the very end of it, my wireless desktop is wavering around 2mbps most of the time, but it's more than fast enough for everything I'll ever need. <a href="http://speedtest.dslreports.com"><img border=0 src="http://www.dslreports.com/im/22658216/38884.png"></a> <----that link doesn't work, and since I ran the test a second time and got half the numbers, I can't get the original back. Stupid thing. How do I make html work? Me no speaka the HTML.
Oh, and I pay roughly $40 for my internet. A bit less since I have maximum choice HD digital cable and digital phone through the same company, though.

Nah, assuming that the're no bottle necks along the way the only thing that distance affects is ping (latency)... Even with bottle necks dail up down/up speeds hardly affected seen as the speeds are so slow.
Download Speed: 39 kbps (4.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 132 kbps (16.5 KB/sec transfer rate) You can see it's almost exactly the same on an NZ test site, although for some reason that site doesn't test upload properly. :)

I just changed my plan and from the 1st of February I'll have up-to 8000/386kbps.
I could get 24000/1000kbps now but I would have to disconnect my contract then reconnect with the same ISP, or I can wait for my ISP to put me on the new billing system then it would be free and plan changes will be immediate.
I can't wait till the do this 24000/1000 WOW that's ADSL2+

Have they checked/monitored the line quality of the main cable. Mine was very bad a few months back and until a cable tech left the meter hooked up for about 15 minutes we then saw fluctuations in the signal quality. Turned out to be the main line amplifier was out of calibration.

Yes, they have now been out to the house 3 times. They were suppose to come again today, but alas, no-show. Anyway, yesterday, the guy had a monitor on the coax right at the back of the modem and stats were perfect. about 10,000 pings and not a single dropped packet. Throughput was spot on as well. I keep telling them, swap the modem to the new Motorola and not that cheap one they have there now. Thats what was to happen today. Anyway, I tested it on my laptop and it still sucked to day. I took the laptop to a neighbors house and plugged it in and it screamed. I would believe that my wire is bad, but I have 6 PCs in the house and they all behave the same crappy way. They'll be back out Monday I'm sure and hopefully they can resolve the problem.

Hopefully the modem will get you going. When its all said and done call comcast and demand a discount on your bill. They ended up giving me 6 months of service for $24.95 a month.

Yes, the guy that came yesterday was a line man. He was out monitoring at the distribution panel for about 1/2 hour and came up to the house to tell me everything is perfect. Then we headed into the basement when he monitored for another 1/2 hour and still perfect.
I like the idea of demanding a discount though and I believe I will do that. Service was rockin' until just around xmas when things just went into the toilet. Now it's been going on for the entire month and three visits and it still is not resolved.

I had something similar for my Commodore 64. I would dial the phone, wait for the handshake signal, then unplug the cord from the phone's handset and jam it into the modem real quick.

These things really are pretty close to holding the phone and just yelling "one zero zero one zero....." :)

Aw crap… I’m ancient. My first modem was 75 baud… No “K”, no zeros. It was for my AppleII. They had just introduced their first 300 baud modem but it cost a couple of hundred bucks. There was schematic floating around the user groups to build your own modem for like $10. But it was only 75 baud.

No, saying one and zero was an improvement. This baby was like spelling one and zero reeeeeaaaaalllll slow…
