well, its about 11:15 pm pst and i was in bed when i heard my dogs barking, so i woke up to see what was causing all this barking and found a VERY (Cute) Young Possum walking along my backyard fence. :D
these pictures are taken without any image modifications (like Photoshop)
the poor thing was stuck and hanging on for like about 15 mints. before it started to continue its route.,.

it was a very peaceful animal, i believe if you don't bother them, they don't bother you... and i'm not going bother it for sure, because it has some strong sharp teeth's and nails.
it was a great 30 mints of non-stop shooting, it probably wanted to leave fast cause my flash was blinding it.. :D
what a night.. i saw a GIANT Possum once when i was 18 yrs. old, it was 2x bigger then this one pictured.. and scared the living sh** out of me and my younger brother when we came out at night cause we heard something moving (we didn't had dogs then). as soon as we saw it from about 40 ft. away, we ran like there was no tomorrow.. hehe
well goodnite all..

Dear KoiBoy,
One thing that would have been S-C-A-R-Y would to have met a dSLR fanatic. They will attack you visciously if you even suggest that an S3 can take pictures at night.
I guess neither you nor the possum were considering the poor backdrop. Did you keep getting braver or was it just progressivly more zoom?
Great to see these shots, we dont even have possums in our zoo so I look forward to showing these to my daughter tonight. :)
Thanks to you and your S3.

I always thought possums were white all over? Maybe CA has a different species than Wisconsin?

I'd have to agree here; the one that was at my house was white, and extremities were pink.

could be either this one in the pic or the white one was/ is a juvinile and they turn black as they age? I have seen grey ones, we have alot where i live and see em smooshed in the roads allot ( they are so slow) The problems with these guys and dogs are, they are so slow its hard for em to get away, if there is no escape they will attack very viciously and really can do alot of damage to a dog, esp if the dog is just being curious. My cats seem to get along with them just fine though...go figure, coons, and skunks to.. stupid cats!!

;) Nice job with the catchlight in his eyes. LOL
California possums look like that. They are pretty tame when you leave them alone, but they love to make the dogs bark. We have just been blessed with a chicken running around our neighborhood. Don't know where it came from, or how it got in the middle of a big city, but it's at my fence every morning at 5:00 am making my dog go crazy. No pics yet. My camera doesn't work before 7:00am

Try to get shots of the possums that are black with a white stripe down the back. They are extremely friendly! If you run right up to them and pet them they will usually show you their rear end as a sign of submission. They're great.

KoiBoy did the right thing he protected his precious S3 from harm. How dare you suggest the leave his camera unattended.
Has anyone considered that this was probably a normal (white/gray) possum which had joined one of those "color gangs" we've all heard about.:D

In photography, I'm not color blind, and I hope I never become that way. What I see is a great shot of a mostly "black" possum. Great night shot, KioBoy.

It's likely the "white" one mentioned above was an albino. If the extremities, including the ears, were pink that's the most likely scenario. Mostly opossums are black, grey or brown. To be able to tell the age, look at the ears. A juvenile will have white in the ears that gradually fades to black as they get older. An opossum never stops growing through it's life, so that why very large ones are seen. Their life span is only about three years, and sometimes less in the wild. They are extremly adaptable and one of the very few wild animals that have managed to expand their range under pressure from man (another being the coyote).
How do I know all this? I did volunteer opossum rescue and rehab work with several of the wildlife organization in San Diego years ago.

;) maybe when you have time, you can stop my Los Angeles and camp out in my backyard and rescue this pretty little possum. J/k (just kidding)
i have seen people trap these possums, when i went to the animal shelter to adopt a dog years ago, i seen them, but thought that the shelter would just put them to seep, i good to know that there are rescue groups out there that help these possums. :)

If you ever happen to come upon an injured or sick opossum you might contact the Opossum Society of the United States. They are right in your own backyard (Orange County). http://www.opossumsocietyus.org/
