Stupid question... but I just want someone's answer anyway

Is using "M" Manual mode the same as having TV, AV, & P modes all in one..?

I like to use this mode.

Thanks,
Tito

Of course, it is always best to read the manual, but the short answer is:

P: Camera sets aperature and shutter automatically
Tv: You set shutter, camera sets aperature automatically
Av: You set aperature, camera sets shutter speed automatically
M: You set aperature and shutter yourself.

I always have mine set on AV mode..........

I love that mode for some reason. It stays there 99% of the time.

You can set your camera on Tv, Av or P and you're bound to get a decently exposed picture most of the time.

If you set the camera on "M" without knowing why you're using the "M" mode in the first place, then if you're really lucky you may get a few properly exposed shots just by dumb luck but most of the time, they're bound to be over exposed or under exposed.

This is the answer I was looking for. So basically I should choose a mode that the camera will set at least one setting on its own and let me choose the other setting. Because choosing everything will get me underexposed/overexposed pictures most the time. Makes sense. I've had some luck using the "M" mode so far. But I do get overexposed most of the time and underexposed sometimes.

I'm still learning.

Thanks,
Tito

No, no, no! I didn't say that about the "M" mode. I said that if you chose the "M" mode without knowing why, then you'd get over or under exposure. Using the "M" mode is almost as easy as using the Av or P or Tv modes as long as you understand what what you're doing.

Here's an exercise. Let's say when you shoot in Av mode, you normally select f/8. The camera would take care of select the shutter speed for you and setting it as well.

OK, with the camera in M mode, set the aperture to f/8. Now, look in the viewfinder at the bottom where the exposure level indicator is. See where the exposure pointer is. Is it in the middle where the '0' is? If not, rotate the shutter selector wheel (the one behind the shutter button) until arrow is in the middle where the '0' is. If you can't set it there, then the aperture you selected needs to be adjusted.

Now, if you really knew what you were doing, then you could set the arrow a little to the left or a little to the right of the center. But that's for another lesson and exercise. :D
