I contacted Canon about this problem, and didn't find the answer very useful, so I'm posting it here to see if anyone else has encountered this problem:

I have two batteries, one of which is a Canon, the other a Merkury - neither are more than a year old. I also have two chargers manufactured by Canon. The problem is with both chargers/batteries - ie I can switch which battery is in which charger and encounter the same problem. Essentially, when I plug a battery in to charge, the light will eventually turn green, but if I remove the battery and then immediatly re-insert it into the charger, the light on the charger will become red. Also, when I insert both batteries into the camera, the camera usually immediatly tells me to charge the battery pack. However, sometimes I can fix this problem (temporarily - enough time to take one picture) by opening the battery compartment and then closing it again. Canon suggested I clean the terminals (which I did) and said outside of that it was likely a camera problem. Are they correct, or has anyone fixed this problem by getting a new charger or battery? I am (obviously) not very camera savvy so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

It sounds, like Canon said, like a camera problem. Most of my chargers will indicate "charging" when I insert a battery, even if it's just been charged - they pump a little juice in to test it, and if it passes, they'll show "Full". But that you need to fiddle with the camera to get it to accept the batteries says that's where the glitch is.
