I'm in the Thomaston area. I just finished a personal project shooting old dilapidated structures. It was a very cool project. I made a book (via Kodak) and it sits in my living room. I would love to make several project books.

I too would like to look for rusted stuff. I have a pretty decent start with a couple of old cars and a tractor. I also got one of an old earth mover that turned out pretty good. I just drive around and if I see something I can get to with out getting into trouble I'll get a few pictures of it. I'm not sure how that would work with someone tagging along... taking photos of the same thing.

Basically, I fill up the car and drive around these long, curvy country roads looking for stuff to shoot. That's how I got onto the whole dilapidated buildings thing. I saw a couple buildings that were ready to fall down, got some pictures of them and found that there were many many more buildings like this in my area. So I made it into my own personal project. I tried not to get shots of anything that people might be living in. It had to be non occupy-able.

Set some goals and when you go out you'll have a ball when you start finding stuff to shoot.

Good Luck Celticclover13! And HAVE FUN!!! That's what it's all about!

Thanks :D

@Lowbyte, I so wish I could have bought your Mk IV, whoever got it got a fine camera. Did you replace it? The new 1DX has my eye but at the price they want for it I'm going to be dreaming for a while!

Anybody planning on shooting any New Years festivities?

Ahhh!! The steel wool is awesome! How did you get it to burn? What's the set up, that's so cool!

CameraMan

I used a large size Whisk and attached it to the end of a dog leash (with the clasp). I also bought a package of 0000 steel wool. This is very fine steel wool. You can use the 0 fine steel wool too. Just don't use 1, 2, 3, or 4 because I hear it wont burn very easily. You open up the steel wool a bit and then tear it open so you can make a nice flat sheet of it so that air can flow freely through it. Then you stuff it in the whisk. You can light it with either a lighter or a 9 volt battery (yes, a 9 volt battery can start the steel wool on fire). Then once you get the ambers going start twirling it and it throws off the sparks. Sometimes large chunks fly off so it's a good idea to do this somewhere where you wont start a fire. I sprinkled my lawn for about an hour before I did this so the grass was nice and wet. You can do it after it rains too.

My camera settings were 30 seconds at f9 ISO 200. I found that the 30 seconds was a bit long because by the time the steel wool burned out there was still plenty of time on the shutter left so 15 - 20 seconds would work I think.

CameraMan
16th of December 2011 (Fri), 00:46
I also used a glove so as not to tear my hand apart twirling the leash. I still ended up with a little blister on one of my fingers.

Hey Shutterbug Doug-

I'm in NC (hence my forum name!) but my in laws live in Jefferson. Been married to my Gawja Peach for 16 years now! I'm down 5-6 times a year.

I'll be shooting a wedding in Colbert in late January.

I love the area-might retire there one day...

Any good camera shops in the area? All I know of is the Wolf Camera (or Ritz...can't recall right now) in the little shopping center in Athens (at Alps and Baxter)...

Yeah, that's all that's in the immediate area. Other shops in Atlanta, Alpharetta and Decatur(?) I think. I buy and rent online and ship to Canon and other manufacturers if I need repairs.
I'm an original Tarheel myself (Gibsonville) and want to move to Bryson City, or Highlands, NC to retire! Next time you're in the Colbert area you should drive up and shoot the old covered bridge at Watson Mill State Park, if you haven't already. Maybe even a brief side trip(probably 2 hours with stopping and shooting from 85) to Toccoa, GA to the bible college there and shoot Toccoa Falls.

Middle Georgia has a lot of rustic barns and old slave houses if you're into that kind of thing. Also in Andersonville there is an old Civil War prison that is kind of interesting. I went there last summer and enjoyed the exercise. You can drive through it but I enjoyed walking from the parking lot all the way to the Stockade which was a nice long walk. But as I said, you can drive to it also if you're not up for the walk.

It's free to get in also. So, can't go wrong there. I believe there is a donation box still at the souvenir counter. I put $5 in it when I was there.

Never been to that one. I would love to go but can't this year. Last time I was at an air show I rented the 100-400mm and loved it. I used Tv mode for props to try to get some blur and Av mode for jets. Also brought a wide-angle lens for static displays but wished I brought a macro too for detail shots. For the Blue Angles I watched videos of their show for that year before going to the air show so I would have a better idea of the routine and know what to expect. Then you can anticipate the next move and be ready for the shot.

Here's a good page with lots of info: http://airshow-reviews.com/photography.html

I'm planning on heading down to it. I haven't been to one at WR, but have been to the ones at Dobbins a few times.

Tip one: If you havent been to an airshow before, go both days. Day one - enjoy the show, and get a feeling for the displays. Don't aim to take a lot of photos, as you'll miss the experience by looking through the viewfinder (especially the blue angels). Day two: As you'll have a better idea whats going on, you should be able to get more + better shots.

Tip two: If you have a backup body - take it. I have my 100-400 on my 7d, and a 24-105 on my 450D. Make sure it all fits into a small bag - as backpacks / large bags arent allowed. Swapping out a lens while the show is going on is a pain in the butt.

Tip Three: Plenty of memory cards. You'll go through more than you think, even though you will probably junk 70-80% of the photos.

Tip Four: Sunscreen and ear protection. You'll be outside for a LONG time, and the planes are very noisy....

Tip Five: Bring a chair, and something to do for a few hours or sitting around. If it's like Dobbins has been - getting out will take forever, that it's much more pleasant to just sitdown, and wait for the queues for buses to drop, then join the line.

Tip Six: Show Center - Work out where it is, and try to sit somewhere where the sun will be behind you as much as possible near the end of the day when looking towards show center. Not sure what the setup at WR is, but dobbins tends to have you shooting towards the sun a lot.... I've found that moving during the show is not a good idea - once you've claimed your spot - if you move you'll end up with way too many people in the way.

Tip Seven: If you dont have a zoom lens out to 400mm - then rent one. I'd recommend the 100-400 (though be careful you might end up buying one after renting! - I did). I find a zoom much more useful to frame stuff, and you'll probably need the 400mm to get any reasonable close up shots. If you do rent a 100-400 - make sure you have a day before hand to play with it - the push pull zoom can be off putting to some, but to me it's great for following aircraft in the air.

Wow, thanks for all the great info, Daniel! Trying to shoot an airshow is on my list of things to do. I'm just not sure if I'll make it down this weekend. I do have family in the area. I'm hoping my brother will want to go to since he's into aviation stuff, but I doubt I can go both days.

I do have a 100-400 and a 7D, and that's what I was thinking about taking. I probably will take a second body as well if I end up going. The lens/camera combo is still TBD.

I also see that PDK is having an airshow on May 12th. I have a prior commitment that afternoon, but I doubt I could beat the convenience of that one. :)

I've wanted to shoot an Air Show for a long time and I heard the WR one advertised on the radio yesterday. Would love to go to it but I have to shoot at Road Atlanta this weekend and can't pull that off. And the weekend of the PDK one I have to shoot the Drift races at Road Atlanta too. Looks like I will have to wait and see if Dobbins is possible for me. I kind of miss the freedom I used to have to go shoot whatever/whenever but I'm trying to get somewhere in my photography that's been a goal of mine for years and I'm too close now to stop the quest.

Doug - they have "Wings Over North Georgia" in late September up in Rome. A nice thing about that show is they are selling photography passes which gets you in early with unrestricted access to the aircraft and show-line viewing. I wish Dobbins would do that but I suppose that's the difference with military bases. I think the next Dobbins show is 2014 from what I heard. I'll be at RA too this weekend and again for Drift Atlanta.

I went last year and it was a neat little show but I couldn't stay the entire time. It was so hot and I started feeling dizzy after a couple of hours so I got out of there. They moved the show up to an earlier date this year but unfortunately put it right on top of Drift Atlanta. For me, drifting trumps any air show - it's just way too much fun!

Tim (or anyone), have you been up to the Commerce dragstrip? I may head up there this Sat if the weather is accommodating. A friend has a daughter doing the junior dragsters and wanted some photos. Great shots, Doug & Tim! I did manage to get up to Commerce Saturday, and though the action there wasn't as exciting as yours, it was an experience for me. The bikes were quite a challenge for me. Very small and very fast. But it was good panning practice even if my keeper rate was low. I was shooting around 1/100 to 1/125 most of the time. I'm really looking forward to Drift Atlanta now. But first I'm going to tackle Tallulah Gorge this weekend.

Doug, I paired the 70-200 2.8 with the 7D and the 24-105 on the 5DIII. I ended up with more keepers with the 5D3 combo than with the 7D, probably because I was so close to the cars. I found I definitely need to work on my sports panning skills!

On another note, I went to the G-Braves game yesterday when Hudson was pitching. The crowds are still pretty small right now, so you can move around pretty freely to shoot. I took the 5D3 and the 70-200 with the 1.4x tc. I do LOVE that camera so far. Here are a few of my faves from last night. I haven't had time to go through all and process them, but these stood out.

Very nice! Yeah the 5D3 has a better focusing system than the 7D, that could have something to do with it as well. The weekday crowds are usually a little smaller at Coolray and I'm always way too busy during the week to get out. How long is Hudson going to be in Gwinnett? I really don't follow baseball, haven't since the strike in '94 when those rich crybabys made MLB cancel the first World Series since WW I, but I will go shoot them! I'm tempted to have my boss contact their Media contact and see what we can get from that. There is no photo pit there so I'm guessing I could possibly shoot from the dugout. I'm a big baby when it comes to foul balls!lol

Doug, yesterday should have been Hudson's last day in Gwinnett. Jurrjens will be back there now though. :-) They do have a small photo pit by the dugouts. I hope to be in one next Saturday for the Gwinnett Sports Hall of Fame activities. I'll be taking photos of those ceremonies for the county, and I should get a press pass for game shots.

BTW, if I go to Warner Robins this weekend, it'll be Sunday. We have another family outing Saturday. I hope it works out!

Tim..wow, I never went under 160 on my panning shots and had quite a few keepers. Have fun at the Gorge! I might just stay home this weekend and mow the jungle...lol

Yeah, I may go back to faster speed to get more keepers. I love the look of a photo at slow shutter speeds when panned properly but it's frustrating when I come back with so few decent photos. When I look at published photos in the media most of them are obviously at high shutter speeds but they choose angles that don't reveal frozen wheels so much (plus those guys with the big 400mm lenses can't pan those easily). That's something I need to work on but I'll still do some slower panning once in a while for variety.

Middle of the day, lots of traffic, but a 30 second exposure seems to make the traffic just go away leaving a deserted looking city.

This was taken over by some puppet show theater. Can't remember the name of the place. I parked in their parking lot and walked over to the bridge with my Tripod, camera bag, and a towel. I used the towel to cover the camera and lens & edge of the filter which helped keep light from leaking in.

Lots of little planes, so have a long lens. Last year the static display was pretty good. They had an A-10 there that got most of my attention. Parking was a long way from the main area so be prepared to walk unless you want to wait and wait for their "golf cart" shuttle.

I did manage to make it to Warner Robins yesterday. What a great air show! Granted, it was my first air show, but it was awesome! I definitely need to work on panning skills with the slower shutter speeds, but there were still enough "keepers" for me (though not as many as I'd like). Here are a few...

Wow - I was just reading the comments on the air show's Facebook page. Sounds like a total CF getting people in and out. Reminds me of the last show at Dobbins. With so many air shows being done for so many years, why do they keep repeating the same mistakes?

I didn't think the traffic/buses situation was too bad. I got there early (around 9:45) and was on a bus within 15-20 mins. After the show, I hung around for about an hour getting to see the big aircraft on static display that I didn't get to see before the show while I waited for traffic to clear a little. Once I headed to the buses, it took probably 30 mins to get on one. When I got back to my car, the traffic to get out wasn't too bad either, at least to me, and I HATE traffic. I did hear a couple of horror stories from folks who tried to go Saturday and were told it was a 3 hr wait.

I did hear that the food vendors were a ways away from the flight line, and I was a little miffed about that at first when I needed more water, but then I saw they had portable water "tanks" on wheels where people could refill their bottles for free. I took a couple of small snacks and 2 water bottles. I didn't have to spend any $$ on food or water while there, but I refilled my 2 bottles 2 times. The folks there stressed staying hydrated all the time, and even after the show they were giving out water for free. I heard they had to treat over 90 folks for heat issues on Saturday. I think some of their souvenir prices were pretty high, so I passed on a gift or two.

If one of those FB posts is correct and if this is the last year for the show, that will be sad. I did enjoy it, and it's not too bad of a drive from home.

BTW, the commander of the Blue Angels at the show was from Atlanta!

Oh great, just when I was thinking I might go next year. Just looked - not on the Blue Angels schedule for 2013. Nothing at Dobbins for the foreseeable future. I guess I might end up in Beaufort, SC or Pensacola next year if the budget permits.

The sign near the parking lot says 2-1/2 miles but I tracked it on my phone with Endomondo and got 2.8 miles to the falls. Seems to be a pretty popular place. We got there at 8AM and initially only saw a few tent campers. We were back to the parking lot by noon and the lot was nearly full. Just down the road is Dukes Creek Falls which is a nice shorter hike. You can also see a view from the top of those falls if you take a short hike off the Raven Cliff parking area opposite of the Raven Cliff trailhead. For the shot above I had to wade into the cold water.

The photopass for the show in Rome is tempting. Both the Snowbirds and the Black Diamonds is a sweet consolation for not seeing the Blue Angels for me. I'll rent a 100-400 for that for sure! When it gets closer I'll mention it again. I need to double check my UGA football schedule :-|

Last year I got there around 8AM I think. I wanted to beat the heat. The bad thing about getting there early was that you parked the farthest out. I parked down at the end of one of the runways - about as far as you can get from the terminal. They had a golf cart or two shuttling people and they were taking forever so I walked in.

It won't be as hot this year for the air show so that's good for you. Looks like perfect weather at Road Atlanta that day - 70's and mostly cloudy. But I'll get cooked on Friday unless the forecast changes. I prefer some clouds around if I'm going to be out there for 12 hours.

Yeah, could have been Florida or some other media in our Gainesville. But he said he was from Gainesville and had been coming to the track for decades so I assumed he was local.

I didn't like the new track route at all from a photographic perspective. It was probably more technically challenging for the drivers but not great for those of us along the fence on the outside. Once they reached the top of the hill and entered the horseshoe you couldn't get any more photos due to the smoke. And the east winds didn't help either. Friday morning I got some shots from the inside of the track which seemed like a better view but impossible to get in there on Saturday.

Yeah, I heard that a lot from the people outside the fence. The smoke blowing back like it was annoyed me on the bottom side as well. Usually it blows towards the stands on the outside of the track but this year it made shooting from the low side pretty much impossible on the exit runs. Like another photog said to me, better than no wind at all!

Nice drifting shots, Tim & Doug!

I did make it to PDK yesterday, and the wind & clouds made for some challenging shooting there too. The static displays were pretty good. I was fascinated with the Corsair. I was disappointed the P51 didn't make it. The winds were too high for the paratroopers from Fort Benning to perform, although they did go up twice to try. I had fun playing around a little with some HDR processing on a few of the static display shots.
BTW, I saw JBear up on the tower with his mongo lens. I was down with some friends of his by the edge of the gate.

Wow, you got some great shots there! I love the Corsair - wish I could have seen that one. I was wondering about y'all down there as dark clouds rolled over Road Atlanta and a few sprinkles came down. It was pretty challenging too for the drifting that day as we went from light overcast to dark clouds, to some sunshine, and then more clouds. We sucked in a lot of tire smoke and everything is covered with a fine dusting of red Georgia dirt (from a few guys who got off the course). Gotta spend some time cleaning the camera equipment now. Next year I need to think of a different photo strategy if they continue with the new drifting layout.

I would be very interested in that sort of outing. I am planning to go back to Brasstown Bald for Astrophotography sometime in the next few weeks too.

As I mentioned on that Facebook page I would love to do something like this. However, north for me is a day trip since Atlanta is 60 miles north of me. I have been looking into some easy walkable trails way up north. I'm not in shape enough for hiking through the woods but I'm game for a nice trail walk so long as there aren't any steep hills to ascend or descend. :)

I took a helicopter tour in Hawaii once. That would be fun If they had something like that in Atlanta. But I agree with you... It makes no sense to jump out of a perfectly good airplane.

I don't know of any Helicopter services, but here are two Bi-plane charters that might give some good photo opportunities:

From PDK: http://biplaneridesoveratlanta.com/flights.html

From McCollum (Kennesaw in Cobb County): http://www.biplaneride.com/flights.php

I don't think jumping is allowed on either service!!

Good luck - post what you get!

i know of some helicopter services in ATL. they are kinda private because the TV stations usually book them for shooting skylines of downtown for movies and whatnot. its tough finding a helicopter service to fly around north GA though

Prestige helicopters does Atlanta tours (http://www.prestigehelicopters.com/tours.html). I've never done one of theirs but came REALLY close to the $40 trip they had on Saturday. I love helicopters! I've flown on tours in Hawaii, Alaska, and the Grand Canyon. All were awesome. Somehow I don't think the Atlanta landscape quite compares to those three. ;)

I'd be interested in a N. Ga trip too for waterfalls & such. TRhoads, have you done astrophotography at Brasstown Bald before? Night sky photography is on my list of 'to dos'!

BTW, when I was at PDK on Saturday, some folks I met told me about the vintage fly-in at Peach State Aerodrome (http://www.peachstateaero.com) June 2nd. I'm not sure yet if I'll go (especially since I just saw it cost $20), but they're supposed to have some nice old vintage planes fly in for demonstrations that day. The place is just outside of Griffin (kinda close to you CameraMan). That place offers biplane rides too.

Thanks lava, you got some great shots from the Air Show yourself!
Love the Corsair and the torpedo bomber! I had 2 Corsairs and a Japanese Zero models I put together hanging from my ceiling growing up. I have yet to see one in real life and would probably pass out from the excitement. lol

TRhoads, actually there are better places near you with darker skies. http://www.jshine.net/astronomy/dark_sky/index.php?lat=32.69486597787505&lng=-84.4244384765625&zoom=8&pollution=true&selected_id=1
If coming to the mountains you might want to consider Unicoi Crest.
