Its fireworks time again :)

http://www.lowbyte.com/pix/pn-07LnSqFw_24994.jpg

At this point I'm planning on attending the displays in Duluth on the 3rd and Lenox Square on the 4th. I'm considering a tune-up to prepare and get back in the groove at Stone Mountain with the lasershow/fw on Monday or Tuesday night next week if the weather is decent.

Saturday night I might be headed up to Atlanta Dragway for the drag races / jet cars / wheel standers and some fireworks.

Anyone interested?

Hmm, I'm 15 miles from there and I think I have an extra $20 in the breast pocket of my shooters vest. Have you been before? Where's the best place to setup? Will they b1tch if we have better equipment that the track togs?
I'm game for that if you want to meet up!

Oh and... I'm going to the P'tree Road Race and shooting candids for an outfit that posted a gig on craigslist. Not a big paying job but exposure and experience. 5AM-8AM shoot at Lenox Square start line....at least I'll be done before it gets really hot!

Oh and part deux....Earplugs, gotta remember earplugs!

We can meet up- I will plan on arriving around 4pm. I normally just move up and down the fence line on the Pit side. With this being a smaller event I don't know that they will have the far side of the track open.

I took this one from the far side a few years ago during the nationals:
http://www.lowbyte.com/pix/web-apn-drag-75.jpg

I've never been chased or harassed based on my camera- most of the time I just walk in, its been years since they have asked to see my ticket. I've always had one, but with my collection of gear I think they just assume I'm media.

Anyone live near Oakwood/Gainesville/Clermont?

There are a number of people from Dawsonville down to the Cumming / Alpharetta area. Welcome to the group.

Sounds good to me, I do need to invest in a better tripod between now and then. The rickety $20 Best Buy one I have from.....maybe 10 tears ago is getting shaky and needs replacement. I guess we'll be toting tripods and equipment all afternoon until the fireworks show unless they do pass outs.
Shot you a pm with my cell number just ring me when you're leaving Atlanta and I'll give you a 30 minute head start and meet you there. Anyone else interested? Beuhler? Beuhler?:D

If you are an Atlanta Georgia area POTN'er, please say hello and reply to this thread.

I'm just trying to get a head count for possible future outings and get-togethers.

If you have suggestions for what YOU think would be a fun photo outing let me know that too.

I, for one, would love to put together a G&N shoot locally and hire some of the models that I (as an individual) can't ever afford.

Tom

I know it has been a long time sense the original post, but, count me. I live in the area. Relatively new member @ POTN; I love it.

I am going to cancel my offer to have a Meet and Greet in my home. This is due to the lack of participation by regular and active members. It was not my intention to have a meet and greet in my place of residence with people who are not active, people I have never seen in here, or ever even talked to. And this for sure is not because I havent been active. I personally feel as though there is some comfort in at least getting to know someone online before actually meeting them in person. You can at least online get a feel for the person. And if we hadnt clicked personally online, then you probably wouldnt have wanted to attend a meet and greet I was hosting.

This seems to have however turned into something very different. There is only I think 2 active/regular members attending and about 4 or 5 others who are not active and want to attend. Nothing against those of you posting "I havent been on here in awhile but I would like to attend". Maybe if you stay active and we can get to know you, I wil consider rescheduling such an event.

It is my hope that you all can understand my position seeing how this would have been in my home. Seriously, would you just open your door to random people online? I don't for one second think so, but if you would have, or do, then that was a personal decision you made for yourself. This however is the personal decision I have made for myself and on behalf of my family.

Hope we can all get together soon, I have tried numerouse times to meet many of you.
Lets possibly consider making this a Zoo meet and greet.
That way if I dont like you, I dont have to be nice to you or I can just feed you to the lions.

Dawn, I fully understand what you're saying and I agree with your reasoning. Hopefully the ones not as active(I haven't been until recently) will start to participate more in discussions here and maybe we can get something set up in the future. I really do want to learn more about studio techniques!
I also agree with a more public setting possibility Zoo or the Aquarium. I haven't been to the Zoo in Atlanta in almost 30 years! I might have to drag my grandson and a tender for him along with me.
And who's to say we don't feed YOU to the lions?:p

I didn't realize you had invited folks to your place until I read your decline. I had just read page one then signed on as an Atlanta area resident. But, count me in; I'll be there. Just kidding. I wouldn't think you would want a bunch of strangers at your house either. I did read back a few pages to find out what the story line was. Hey Dawn - i think you're making the best decision - and I'm really sorry I couldn't come... or at least commit to coming since the Oshkosh trip has been planned for some time and work here requires all my time before a trip like that.

I haven't been active online for a number of reasons - i moderate a forum and am active in at least five more and my online time is spread too thin as it is. Plus running two businesses and attending to all the different interruptions that worflow cause on weekends leading up to other events - its a pain!

What about a forth of July meet for fireworks out somewhere away from anyone's home? Is everyone so set on their plans that a rocket or two is that much different from one shot somewhere else? To me fireworks are fireworks - doesn't matter to me where they are shot. After Oahu on New Years... everything else will be anti-climactic anyway.
Everyone goes to see and or shoot fireworks somewhere - why not coordinate where and those who can show up - do. That way you're not stuck with a case of cold beer you won't drink and everyone just shows up on neutral territory.

Anyone know of a good location to shoot the Peachtree Road Race from? I've never been down there for one of those, but we're going to this year to see a friend go by. Thought there might be a good spot early along the route to shoot as people start to feel their first pains of exhaustion and before people start dropping out.

After yard work was finished - there just wasn't time to go to the track, so we went over to the river to shoot ducks in sweet light. There weren't any.

Waited almost an hour when four came up from the right around a bend.

Hey Chad - hows it going? I wonder what the sculpture is supposed to depict - the Pope invading Martin Luther & the reformation, the Germans invading Europe, the Americans invading Germany, or the Russians invading the free world.
Powerful sculpture though - thanks for sharing it - i wouldn't have know it existed without your shot!

Chad0321

Actually there is much more to it. It is a water fountain, was not on when I took the pics. It is called the carosel of marriage.

The "Marriage Carousel" (Ehekarussell) was erected in 1984, immediately in front of the White Tower. The work, created by Jürgen Weber, refers to the poem "Bitter-sweet Married Life" by Hans Sachs, who in drastic words described marriage from the first stages of ardent love via exhausting struggles, and right through to the death bed. The fountain's sculptures reflect this text in all its beauty and horror, while Hans Sachs is depicted dancing above a goat and a virginal beauty. When the fountain was put up in 1984, its drastic expression and the high overall costs triggered a stormy controversy in the City Council, in the media and in the population.

Chad: Too bad you guys didn't have more time to get out and about, but I guess Uncle Sam had other plans... Cool shots. Is that a street performer headed into an elevator you were in?

Lenox is good and centrally located - but i've heard parking can be a problem. What is Duluth like? and where do they shoot?

I've never had a problem parking for the Lenox fw show, there always seem to be plenty of space at the Dunwoody or Sandy Springs marta stations :) Its only a two block walk from the Buckhead station to the parking lot of the Mall where you setup.

The roads in the area will start being closed around 6pm- its a mess gettign out of there by car. I just wait 20 minutes before even packing up, then pretty much walk right onto a train and go home.

The Duluth fireworks are held at Scott Hudgens Park, off of River Green Parkway. This is about 1 mile north of Pleasant Hill on PIB. The traffic and the signs will get you there once your in the area.

Here are a few of the shots from the track on Saturday night:

Nice shots there Low.....lol, I have no idea how I screwed the weekends up. I was thinking about Lanier Speedway, they're doing fireworks Friday night and somehow I transposed their date to Commerce. My wifes sisters family just returned from 6 years in Japan so I wasn't able to ditch the family event and join you. No matter how much I protested that there were dragsters and such and not just fireworks to be had. Ahh, the price I pay to get my way most of the time. I'll probably go to Lanier Speedway and shoot some racing and fireworks Friday night though.
Here's a few I got at the Jefferson display. The first is a recompose to fill the frame with fireworks.

Now that I look at it here, looks like I should have used a little lower jpeg compression for the fw shot, oh well.
What do you mean by that? And how would that help?

When you save an image using PS "Save for Web" (or name your favorite editing program) the save dialog will have a "Quality" number from 1-11 or 1 to 100. I picked a number on the low side of "medium quality" setting,in lightroom of 35.

Remember that jpeg is a "lossy" compression scheme. Meaning the more you compress the file, the more detail you loose. The original image doesn't look so jagged in the lines towards the bottom of the fireworks picture. The halo-effect area around the light streaks looks liked dashed lines, is should look like a glow- but the high level of compression "ate" it.

Does that help?

Small apature (f 16-22), low ISO (100-200) and long exposure (10-15 sec) used to work with film, usually you would have to use a bulb to hold the shutter manually. This will be the first time for me with digital.

Chad- my fireworks shots in the thread are all roughtly 3 to 4 seconds, f8-f11 at iso 100.

I setup the camera in Manual and change the apature from f8 to f16 or so depending on what I think will appear in the sky by following the shells up. The finalie could be f22, its just educated guesswork :)

Nice article jBear! I've done freebies before but usually as an example of my work to parents to get other jobs from it and it's paid off in most cases.

Mike! If you have a shutter release, use it....and a tripod of course. DUH!

Chad, my exif data is available in my shots to see my settings for my fireworks shots. I was shooting in bulb mode with a remote release, press remote release and hold it until I wanted the shutter to close then release the switch. The first shot is a recomposed shot to fill the frame and I think it says 13.5 seconds. About 5 of those seconds the lens was covered with a black card( a dark hat will do too) while I moved my focus point to the left to get more fireworks exposed on the right of the shot. Have fun and play with it! Oh, and manual focus focused on infinity.

Thanks Harley!

for every shot, every time?

Well the fireworks are always up in the sky (normally around 500-1000ft), and if they are coming *towards me* inside of minimum focusing distance- the last thing you'd find on my mind is changing the focus and clicking the shutter.

Check the focus charts on your favorite lenses, 1000 feet @ f/11 or more you have a pretty massive depth of field.

Shutterbug Doug

for every shot, every time?
Yup! The ones I shot were on a 24mm prime about , oh maybe, 150-250 yards away from the launch site. The shots I posted represent about 1/3 to 1/2 of the actual frame. All on manual focus on the lens and opened to infinity.
If you're too close or don't have enough "wide" to your lens the fireworks will escape the frame and you'll get this.....

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh124/DKCPhoto/sample%20photos/oops.jpg

Try to set up in a nice elevated location with the display down wind from you. This may take some prior planning and scoping out the area for a few prime spots. Why a few? Wind direction is unpredictable and can screw up even the best planning you do in advance.
And definetly try to get there early! Other photogs that have shot them before could be in the same spot you're shooting for. Pack some sandwiches, a blanket or chairs and some drinks. It'll be well worth the extra effort!
Most of all have fun! Every shoot is a learning experience in one way or another.

The exif data on this shot says 15.3 seconds which is correct. I covered the lens with a black board(actually a square of black "fun foam" from Walmart I had left over from making a DIY bounce) while holding the shutter open and timed a second grouping with another one.

I'll be at Duluth and Lenox.

You can look for me close to where the fireworks are setup. You'll see the ryder truck or whatever in the closed off field. Look for me in the field closest to there, I'll have a reclining chair and blue blanket out.

This area is away from the stage. Best description I can figure.

No, what CF card are you using. I use Lexar Professional 8 GB, 133x speed (Write Acceleration).

Just needed to add one more shot. This is a shot of the lady photog for the paratrooper team, I think she was jealous of my EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, :D.

I think I read somewhere that however long you leave the shutter open it takes that long to write it. I think it was in a long exposure thread somewhere. I know it took a while to write the ones I took but I would just "click ahead" and do my next shot and sort the mess out later. Once I saw I was on spot with my f stop, focus and location I wasn't worried about it. Shoot 'em and sort the mess out later.
I didn't shoot fireworks at Peachstate Speedway tonight but I was offered a job! Hopefully I'll make a few $$ selling race shots to the drivers! Uploading them now now, samples later.
Maybe I'll hit Lanier Speedway and shoot their display tomorrow night.....if my back quits acting up.
Sorry you missed the fireworks DD, it looks like they had a heck of a party down there! Band and all!
Nice shots guys! Both of you!

This is due to the built in noise reduction processing. The longer your sensor is open the more work it is for the camera to sort signal from noise. You can keep shooting for as long as you have buffer to fill in the camera.

Thats the gist of it anyway. Sorry we didn't manage to run into you Mike!!

That's a big reason why I started recomposing my shots. Most of your local municipalities can't afford a largely extravagant display so they're usually shot from just one launch location. I know Boston, New York and Norfolk/Va Beach always used barges(2 or 3 or more) to launch from and that gives a larger spread area to the display.
It's too bad some of these midsized local cities can't get something done together and double the display and FILL the skies with color like the larger cities.
I'm going to go to Chateau Elan and shoot their display tonight which is usually rather nice. We'll see what happens!

Lowbyte, what lens were you shooting the Duluth display with? I think I'm going to turn my 24mm over to portrait and try to capture more launch trails tonight.

And in my opinion, you captured the best shot by far.

But this is coming from someone who thinks firework still photos are kind of boring. I personally feel as though fireworks are more enjoyable in motion, and anticipating the lights after you hear it launch. But the moment you had a reflective lake and silouettes of people in the photo, it got interesting, artistic, and a true representation of the event taking place. Everyone did a great job, but your attempt takes the cake! Good Job!

But like with most art, this is just my personal opinion.

Thanks Chad & DD!
My wife Debbie shot the fireworks over the lake on 18 from about a 9 iron out from the green. Unfortunately when i was setting up the camera and getting it ready for her to shoot - i must have bumped the focus ring out slightly as the shots are a bit blurry. Unless she is wearing her glasses - she'd never have a chance at catching it. So...

I had to run down to the dam and shoot the fire team. Oh well - can't be in two places at once!

Chad! The lake reflection is outstanding! Great job.

jBear! Thanks on the different perspective on fireworks displays! I don't know that I'd be shooting them off in shorts but they're his legs to burn! Iknow if I'm cooking bacon for breakfast I cover as much of my body as possible to avoid burns from grease but I think gunpowder burns might be a little hotter.
Your wife sounds like mine jBear, if Coke had never come in bottles she's be declared legally blind! LOL And the sunset...nice. I shot a "not so nice view from the race track, I'll have to pull it out and make everyone, I mean, I'll have to throw it up later! LOL

They moved the shooting location of the fireworks at Chateau Elan since the last time I was there so I was in a bad position but still have shots...with power lines. :-( I'll put some up later when I finish working on all the racing photos. Money before pleasure!

Here are a few shots from the laser show at Stone Mountain last week. It had been years since I'd been (with my 35mm SLR), so I had to go and try my digital gear. These were all with a 40D and 17-40L lens except the first one on which I used the 100-400mm.

Oh I want to make it ot the laser Show this year... Get to try out my XT.
Really Good shots of the laser show. I will have try and get that. What settings did you use shooting the show?

For most of the laser show shots (with strictly the laser images), I was using ISO 800, f4, with the shutter varying between .5 and 1.0 seconds. If you let it go too long, the image blurs due to the lasers' motion, and you have to wait for an image that's somewhat "stationary" to get a decent shot. Of course a tripod is a given, and a remote release is helpful so you're not "glued" to the camera. You can watch the show, wait for an image, and press the release. Review the image and adjust the shutter for the next shot if necessary.

On the fireworks shot, it was at ISO 200, f4 @ 1sec.

If I were to go back and shoot it again, I'd probably use 2 cameras, one for the true laser part with my 70-200mm f2.8 lens (at 70mm) and one to get the fireworks with my 17-40 f4 lens. The settings for both types of shots are very different. I'm surprised the fireworks one came out as good as it did at f4!

Glad you liked them. Good luck when you go!

I like the carving shot with the 100-400 a lot! And I don't have a clue how to shoot laser shows - so I'm very impressed with those. If they could be tweaked in photoshop to make the light brighter - it may help some - but it could just be my monitor.

Set up my lights so my wife could practice shooting with off camera flash (she's been learning how to shoot lately) - we didn't have a cute model like what DD gets all the time - so we just used... me. - and some of my guitars. This is the first - there may be more.

In answer to both Michael and DDawn - the Strat has siblings too... there is a 78 Precision in a case somewhere - probably in climate controlled storage and i think the Telecaster is there too. DDawn - just went over to your other posts and wow - you've come a long way baby! Very impressive - but since my wife is looking over my shoulder, i couldn't "study" them as much as I'd like to...
Your technique and the way you seem to have fun with your models is spot on - i think you're gonna do well in this business.

Went to a marketing seminar yesterday in Decatur - the photog made and lost millions and made it back again over the last 10 years. At one point driving a Porsche and having a fleet of new BMWs along with a trendy upscale 11,000 foot studio. Sold it the day he put it up for sale - took time off and them moved to the middle of nowhere and did it all over again - only this time with his life a bit more in order. His marketing techniques seemed solid and if implemented the right way - would make any photog a wealthy person in a short amount of time. Since i have an aversion to being wealthy... i'm probably going to just continue to shoot objects that don't pay anything! :):):)

Thanks jbear a ton for the comment about my photos.

Oh but do share, I want to drive a porche!
But more than that, I would love to "need" a 11,000 square foot studio. =]

Even though I am shooting many days out of the week right now, I am kind of in a rut and lack a bit of direction right now. Things have moved quickly for me when it comes to the photography itself, but that left little time for me to learn, understand, or even begin to know where to go from here. =/

Updated my gear list with new photos of the studio. I added pictures of the waiting room and the dressing room. =/

Heading back to Tybee Island the week of the 28th. Can't wait to get down there again. May try to get back out to Cummberland Island. But then again just sitting around doing a hole lot of nothing sounds pretty sweet also. =]

Be careful what you wish for... the guy talked about coming from nothing to being one of the top photogs in Australia in a very short amount of time. He had every trapping of complete success and evidently it wasn't what filled the void in his life. He sold the large studio on the same day it went up for sale and walked away - in the pit of complete clinical depression. Just because we achieve our dreams and financial security - it doesn't mean the battle is won.
After thinking about his sales techniques - and how easy they are - i can't imagine someone not making a lot of money in this business.
The two biggest tips to walk away from this seminar are:
1) we (other photogs) are NOT your competition. BrandsMart is. No one NEEDS a big screen TV. Our competition is fighting for the buyer's discretionary dollars - same as us. Stop worrying about other photogs - learn from them.
2) if you don't implement your plan - nothing will happen. - Figure out what you are going to do and then DO IT! Don't hold back.

Well #1 has never been a problem from me, I dont know anyone to compete with, I only know other photographers to learn from. I am trying to read and talk to others about my direction while also going after my own ideas and dreams.

After my vacation I am going to be doing #2. I just purchased a small bar for the studio, and I have everything I need to do victoria secrets type shots. Then I am going to start shooting for calanders. I dont mind saying this openly because I do have one major advantage over many who will try the same thing. I have web site with mass amounts of traffic to advertise my products to already in place, as well as another advertising outlet with tons of traffic. Hopefully having these advertisment outlet will do the trick to get me started hard and heavy in this area. And of course I have plans in place just in case I do succeed to expand on this idea. =]

Clinical Depression, thats what you get working in corporate america, been there and done that already while chasing dreams. But I have never had an issue with this while working for myself for the past 8 years. And at times I was extremely stressed and over worked. But because I knew my just reward was waiting for me at the end of the rainbow, it just never bothered me like it did when I was chasing dreams in corporate america. Success doesnt scare me, failure however does. Maybe thats why I am so driven, failure isnt an option. =/

UGH! :p

Not to be argumentative - but depression is a chemical imbalance that can happen to anyone. Its not just getting bummed about our jobs or life. I've had two dear friends commit suicide in the last two years who battled this and another one who can't support his family anymore - due to it... and he worked for himself - at home - in his own studio!

The Australian photog from the seminar wasn't in corp america - He had an 11,000 square foot top end studio that mostly shot portraits. He had achieved what most of us dream of - on his own - and yet found that it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. A lot of wisdom there.

Sometimes we get so absorbed in grasping the brass ring, that we forget the people we stepped on and opportunities we missed along the way.
--

So is glamour and boudiour the direction you want to take your photography? Sounds infinitely more interesting than weddings and babies!:D:D:D
(I would have thought that was where a lot of guys would want to go)

Sounds like you're very focused on what you wish to accomplish - thats great! You'll do well - your shots so far have shown how much you've learned in such a short amount of time.

Anyone want to go to a concert? I have two Kenny Chesney tickets that I got for free from the National Guard. I dont like Country music, the seats are 109-110, Sec 425 Row 4. Also performing is Sammy Hagar, Leann Rimes, Brooks and Dunn. Show is at turner field, must pick up tickets in Cumming.

Sorry to hear about your friend, thats truely a shame. Yes I understand its a chemical imbalance which usually requires regular medication use on a daily bases. But I do believe that our life styles choices and unawareness of self can contribute to the effects.

Well I dont worry about the stepping on people because this isnt a problem for me, I am by nature very thankful, and very humble, even though also very focused. But missed opportunities, I know I have to step back sometimes for self evaluations. I have always had to do this because sometimes I move right along far to fat. My degree is in Computer Programmer, I ended up becoming a a Server Systems Engineer after evaluating programming and realizing it wasnt for me since I like communicating with people far to much to sit behind a monitor ingrossed in code.

I really dont know what I want to do. For now I want to just continue learning, continue having fun, and do some calanders since I do love glamour and boudiour. Who knows after that. I havent been doing this long enough to even really have a clue. I'm still trying to find my way. I'm focused, but not that focused that I have anything written in stone. =]

Hey - Chad - you still have those tickets? when is the concert - I'd take em if you still have them. Otherwise...

Sorta thinking of lightning pictures down near or at the GT parking deck tonight - or maybe Galleria parking deck. Anyone game?
You need a tripod, poncho or rain gear and a wide angle lens and it would help to have a remote/wired shutter release. I had my best luck shooting out the back window of the truck last time. Could probably put two or three cameras on tripods in there and have room for three people.

Incredible Photos all, I am jealous.
This is my first attempt at posting, I just ordered an Xsi, my first Digital SLR. Been doing 35 mm for years with Pentax and an old Canon camera, but I just got tired of the cheaper digitals.
This is quite exciting. Oh and I live in Savannah.

How can anyone not love Tybee. Its affordable, its laid back, its not over crowded, its beautful, and the beach never closes, plus you can drink on the beach. =]

My Goal? To move to Tybee! That is the last major goal I have set for myself in life. =]

Thanks for the Welcome.
Dawn I get to Tybee a good bit, we used to go there at lunch time and sit on the beach relaxing. One time a client called me on the cell and asked what that noise in the background was. Try explaining surf to someone that thinks you're in the office breaking a sweat.
We love this area.
So far I like the new Canon. I have not used one since the AE-1 I had in the 80's. It works well, is pretty responsive, good rich colors and fits my hands well. I do not particularly like the kit lens, although the images are very good. I will take it downtown this weekend and put it through some paces. I had to get a SD card and extra battery, it all adds up eh. The thing I like best is not having to worry about the lab screwing up the image, colors etc, and wasted prints. This will be nice. Also, it adds a good bit of depth over the P&S cameras I have been using for a couple years. They work well enough and in a trained hand can be wonderful, but I am not quite that good, so I need all the help I can get.

I like faces, I like urban shots, people being people, some structures, especially man made. I have a hard time with nature shots, seems hard to improve on mother nature sometimes. I would really like to be able to capture the human condition in all positive forms, it makes me feel good that not everything man touches is bad.

I will post some after this weekend.

Again that You All for this wonderful site.

Jack for sure it totally adds up quicker than you think.
For sure its not a cheap hobby, but dang if it aint the best.

I am so jelous, I would be on that beach all of the time. Good thing I never lived there when I was working because I would always end up fired having to make those same lame phone calls about how work is rough with the sound of the surf in the background.

Cant wait to see your photos!

Awww thanks Doug! This was actually my first shoot on white seemless paper, appears to have went well. I lost a bit on my 1:3 ratio due to all of the white bounce, but it appears as though a 1:3 saved my butt here from going flat. Had I been at a 1:2 this would have been ruined. *wipes sweat from head*

My daughter and I are having fun laughing about how we "so" need to take up touch football. But honestly, I am having a blast.
