If you are an Atlanta Georgia area POTN'er, please say hello and reply to this thread.

I'm just trying to get a head count for possible future outings and get-togethers.

If you have suggestions for what YOU think would be a fun photo outing let me know that too.

I, for one, would love to put together a G&N shoot locally and hire some of the models that I (as an individual) can't ever afford.

Lowbyte you didn't wave big enough when you passed - didn't know when you headed by!

That was a rough trip- I almost needed your help about mile 35. The rear brakes locked/overheated on a brand new trailer I was towing

That was a little more excitement then I needed that evening, not to mention the 25 minutes under the trailer resolving the problem.

I'd love to take some first-responder photos, but not if they are hosing down a trailer attached to my truck. I know- I'm picky.

Anyone have some suggestions for this Sunday?

Buford (north of Atlanta) here. Just moved to GA a few months ago. Looking for some good landscape shot locations or creepy old cemeteries to test my IR camera (which should arrive today!) around the area. Open to meet and greets anywhere to learn what there is to shoot in GA. Looking forward to hearing for you all.

Why don't we try and get together to meet, swap shoot locations or whatever else. Looks like there was a fair response from the ATL POTN'ers.

As usual , everyone is everywhere in Metro Atlanta. Give me your thoughts and I will scout meeting locations in North Metro. Then if we get it going, we can move to different areas next time.

"North" being Roswell, Alpharetta, Duluth, Norcross..you get the picture.

(I am open to any area though, I just know the northside better.)

What ya think..?

Grimm75,

If the cemeterys are your thing you should check out Oakland Cemetery downtown---
http://www.oaklandcemetery.com/

I haven't been myself, but have seen other groups organize trips downthere.

Speaking of North Metro- I'll give a heads-up to everybody- the Falcons start their training camp at the end of July in Flowery Branch.

The set up is great for those wanting high quality football images. Coach Mora really made it a great environment for the Fans, we will just have to wait-n-see what happens this year under Petrino. Even though the rules state otherwise nobody gave me any grief over my 1d2n and 300/2.8L.

Here is a montage I made from one session in July of last year (sorry about the colors/quality- I think these got eaten in colorspace conversions last year)

http://www.lowbyte.com/pix/fm-ftc0727n.jpg

They haven't updated the website for this year yet (they never do till the last minute) but they do post a schedule for the whole camp when it happens. You can take a look here to get an idea of what the schedule will look like-
http://atlantafalcons.com/team/tc.jsp

I'll be there this year for 5 or 6 sessions, anyone else interested?

I have a few suggestions for a place to meet on the 14th towards Roswell... (I'm going from memory, so if someplace is gone a local needs to speak up :) )

Why I picked these places-
I'm assuming we are talking mid to late afternoon (1 to 4pm?)
No reservations for a group required
We can drag some tables together without getting thrown out
People can eat or drink as they see fit
Can be found from I-285/GA-400

Off GA-400 Exit 5A - Perimeter Mall Area - Taco Mac
Off GA-400 Exit 8 Mansell Road - Chapps
Off GA-400 Exit 10 Old Milton Parkway - Five Seasons Brewery

Somebody pick a place and a time :-D

If those on the Gwinnett I-85 corridor (I see buford, duluth, etc) want to carpool I can pick people up at the Kroger on Sugarloaf Parkway across from Gwinnett Arena.

I can take 4 people in my Expedition.

Any Idea on where we're going yet and at what time (morning or night)? I think I'll be able to take off of work (im the manager  ). Looking forward to meeting you guys. Anybody have anything to sell around that time? I'm looking to extend my setup and was wondering if anybody has a 20d, 24-70 f/2.8, 28-70 f/2.8, 50mm f/1.8, or cheaper used 30d. I'm open to all sorts of things though too.

Hope to see you all soon.

Austin,
Our posts must have crossed in the ether... So nothing definite yet. I would prefer to keep all the decision making on the forum. My past experience herding cats over email (starting from an open forum) is that it just leads to people rehashing the discussion when the join the email list not knowing whats already been decided.

Plus this is an open invite. So as things are decided everyone knows whats going, even if you read this topic on the 12th- you can show up.

Now if this turns into something regular- and people want a list, I can set one up in a heartbeat on my servers. Speaking of something regular- would the Gwinnett people be intersted in picking a spot for a every fourth wed or turs of the month get-together?

JefferyVB,

Off of the top of my head the best advice I can give is backgrounds, backgrounds, backgrounds. The one problem with the first two weeks of TC is the 90 players on the practice field.

There is always someone else or a group standing behind the catch you are trying to capture. I have lots of shots with two and three balls in the air :-D

I find the best overall shots come during the 7 on 7 and full team drills towards the end of the sessions. This is not to discourage you- I'm just trying to keep you from taking 800 pictures where in 725 of them you can't tell who the subject really is.

If anyone else is going I'll be at the Thurs 3pm, Fri 6pm and Sun morning practices. I'll be the guy with the 300L and a red backpack. Feel free to say hi if you drop by.

It was fine, just a bunch of people who need a real job :-P Somebody has too much money and free time though, they had an air-banner made and had a service buzz around the Falcons Facility with their nasty little message.

The media- all of the remotes and sat trucks (who I assume were there for ESPN) made for much more of a 'disturbance' then the demonstration. It brought traffic to a crawl as the trucks really limited visibility around the strange curved entrance into the parking area.

I hadn't been to one before the last one - so I didn't know what to expect. Everyone (except me) brought their gear and talked and shared around the table. Ok- so just to firm this up since we have a few people who have expressed interest-
1pm at Rock Bottom Brewery in Buckhead

http://www.rockbottomsouth.com/index.php?pg=location&sub=loc&location_id=26

If your planning on attending please reply to the thread so I have a rough headcount.

There is no formal agenda, just show up. But figure on Intoductions, pass your portfolio (if you bring one), some quick how-tos if anyone wants to volunteer 5 or 10 minutes of their time followed by general Q&A and chit-chat.

I haven't made any formal arrangement with Rock Bottom, but I will try and get there early to see if we can get a corner to ourselves for a few hours.

We had a great time. Marc, Jon, Chris and myself passed pics around...equipment around...and shot the breeze. We set up tripods, played with a Wimberly side kick, played with a 300 mm 2.8 IS, and did some photoshop/Lightroom work.

We had a great time....

Thanks everyone for the wonderful experience on Saturday. Toying with the lenses was a real treat! Lowbyte, that 100-400L is definately on my next purchase list. I hope that quick retouch of the skyline worked out well for you, although it was a bit choppy. If you guys are out shooting lightning sometime this week, let me know.

The 300mm 2.8 is a monster!

Hey, it was great getting together - can't believe how long we were out there on the patio... in the heat...

for you photoshop gurus out there - got a question. I have a landscape shot with a lake at the bottom, a gazebo and building with a tree line through the middle and the sky at the top... funny how that works like that. It is sunrise so the sky and lake reflection have to be one exposure and the trees and building are then fairly dark.
I can magic lasso the sky and lake and invert the selection to bring up the levels pallet and lighten the buildings - but it leaves a line along the selection path even though I use a 32 tolerance. Don't know much about masking or other techniques but would appreciate any tips you may have or if a piece of software makes these complicated selections/masking any easier. I don't want to manually select the path around every leaf.

Once you make the selection, you could expand the selection by a couple pixels (depending on the image size/resolution) and then feather the selection by 1/2 the same amount. The result will be a more gradual transition between the selected area and the latter.

Another method:

Use the select Color Range tool and click on the areas you want to manipulate. Click OK and you'll have the marching ants. --> Then go to quickmask (shortcut Q on the keyboard) and paint black on the unwanted areas that were inadvertantly included by the Color Range tool. --> Exit Quickmask (Q again) and use the pen tool / lasseu tool / etc to tidy up the selection. --> Lastly, use the Feather command by a couple pixels to smooth the selection.

Another method (and possibly easier and quicker)

Make a Curves Adjustment layer and modify the curve until there is as much contrast as possible between what you want to select. (You could also make a Levels or Brightness-Contrast adjustment layer in combination to further increase the contrast) --> Once you get a clean separation with the area you want to select, use any selection tool you like (magic wand / color range, etc) and click to make the selection. --> Use feather command by a couple pixels --> Once you get the selection tuned, delete the adjustment layers and you'll have the selection.

Hope this makes sense

Hey wow Chris - thanks - those tips are fantastic. Too bad I just read them... after three hours of pixel peeping and hand coloring the image where the selection got either too much or too little. One of these days I gotta read the darn instruction book. But these tips looks like I could have save a lot of time your way.

i tried to merge with HDR in PS2 but it didn't take long to figure out I should merge images that were shot on a tripod... handheld doesn't work.

Hi people,
Just recently found these forums having got into photogrphy recently and find that I've missed a recent meet event. I live in the ATL area, Jonesboro and would like to swap tips, meet etc.

Being cheeky now and already asking some advice. I like to photograph aircraft, all sorts from light ac to airliners, to military. I often find myself at Hartsfield, but have not found a really good viewing point so I would welcome any tips on where to get good shots from.

Thanks
Ian

Hey Ian,

Try the smaller airports like Charlie Brown over near Mableton or PDK up in Chamblee. There is a hamburger type restaurant at PDK called The Downwind that might be a good place for some of us to meet and spend an afternoon shooting take-offs and landings.
I need some practice before heading up to Columbus for GML.

Also check out the thread on FredMiranda.com called Mustang Air to Air at:

Tons of great photos and talk about how its done - but get ready - it'll take you half a day to look through the whole thing.

Judging by the sat pictures of the airport and the directions given to Downwind, there is a grassy/dirt area inbetween the buildings and the tarmac. I'm guessing thats the "park"

There is also Dresden Park across from the airport down on its southeast corner, but I think the views from there would be limited at best.

So is someone setting a time? I gather from some commentary I found on the downwind that they are not the most friendly establishment. I would imagine as long as we are eating lunch- don't bring 17,000 peices of camera equipment or tripods we could take pictures for as long as our food lasted.

Then they would tell us to hit the road :-P

So - uuughh - I guess if I make a suggestion - i ought to follow up... sorry about that guys. I hadn't checked in here for the last several days since I've got taxes to get done and could only post on miranda with the available time.

I hope it turned out well - and I hope Jon's new camera is getting good to him. i wish I had made it out and still plan to go over there this coming weekend. Made all the arrangements for GML and can't wait to go - just wish I could afford a new camera like Jon's!

Somebody email me if you want to go back - if it was worth it!

If not - maybe there is another small airport that has good close up vantage points where we could shoot touch and goes. I know there is Mathis Airport up in Forsyth County - its very small and there is a biplane that flies out of there on the weekends. Don't know how they'd feel about a bunch of photogs though. There is also the airport up in Gwinnett that is fairly busy.

A friend of mine has a hot air balloon and we're hoping to find out the schedule for the next big launch. We are going up for a ride and hope there will be something to shoot while we're up there. That might make for a good photo op - I'll keep y'all informed of the time and place.

The acrobatics will be by Gary Ward, Greg Koontz and Gary Rower. Admission looks to be about $15 for the day saturday.

The only thing that really bothers me is I don't see a bag and chair policy posted on the website. Most airshows are getting to be a real PIA for photogs. I don't want to walk up to the gate and be told I can't bring in my 300f2.8.
