What do you mean by shutter delay time? Have you ever used an SLR? The shutter will open right as you press the button, but perhaps do you mean the time between shots? I'm not sure how you can display the potential of the AF just through pictures, maybe would you like to compare it to other cameras? Dpreview.com has great specifications comparisons.

When you are referring to shutter delay then I assume you mean shutter lag? At somewhere around 30-40 milliseconds, I doubt it will be too much of an issue

AF speed I cannot comment on however, but look through the pics on here and there are some very good images shot with the xti, which whilst is testament to the user, might also suggest that the AF is doing something right too!!

Before I got my 1D, I used my XT (XTI has better AF and buffer) primarily for sports. If you learn to use it the right way, it can be fine for sports.

the shutter lag of the XTi is about 100msec per canon USA website. on the 1D mark II, the US canon site doesn't say, but canon europe states 40msec.

if you're coming from the point-n-shoot world (non-SLR), the difference is night and day.

the AF system on the XTi is supposedly the same as that of the 20D/30D, which would be better than the XT system and not as good as the 1D system.
