I was out practicing some action shots with the 100-400 IS L this weekend and had the luck of these airplanes flying by and doing a small show for the beach goers here in Newport Beach. Thought you all might like to see them. They may not be the best, but I was fairly impressed with then given the adhoc handholding (with my monopod still attached, my quick release didn't). The morning haze was pretty thick, so excuse the haziness, it is a very accurate reproduction of how it looked.
Cheers....

Nice. The first one should have been shot at a slower speed (lower ISO would have helped too) to not freeze the propeller. Minor deal though...Nice shots. Wait till you really get used to this lens. It's awesome!

Wonderful shots.
I drove from the Bay Area to the desert today, and the weather was gorgeous. I see it relatively clear at the coast, too.
I don't know my WW II era aircraft, but are those AT-6s?

RFM -- Ya..I was a bit surprised when they appeared, so I just kind of changed from shooting the surfers to the planes without any chages in shooting modes.
Belmondo -- I believe you are correct. If I remember the name correctly weren't these called the "Texan" at one point?
I'm really starting to like this lens, but still favor my 35-350 for slower action, like 5K/10K/marathons etc. I have a tendency to loose the subject in this lens once in awhile due to the 100mm low end. All I am asking for is a 24-400+ IS "L" series lens.....Is that too much to ask for??

Oh! Well then that's different! That must have been cool. Out shooting surfers and here come the WWII planes. Neat suprise!!
Where are the surfer shots?

Here are some of the surf shots....nothing really exciting, it was a very flat day. A lot of long boards and beginners in the water....
