Your guess is as good as anybody else's. Look at the features on the XTi, Nikon D80 and D200. The features will have to be better than the XTi and at least comparable to if not better than the Nikons if it Canon wants it to sell well. Selling price will have to be more than the XTi to preserve sales of that camera and competitive with the Nikons. Also consider the 5D. Unless Canon also upgrades the 5D they will probably want to avoid producing an EF-S camera that outperforms the more expensive 5D, so that puts a top end limit on features and image quality.

I reckon it will be a 10 MP, self cleaning, version of the 30D. Perhpas some improvements in buffer capacity, but otherwise there isn't that much left to do before you hit a 5D or a 1D mark IIN, surely?
Personally I'd love to see a digital version of the eos 3 come out. Droooool...

11 Mpx, self-cleaning sensor. same AF system as the 5D, increased buffer, weather sealing (sort-of), new bigger viewfinder.
And best of all, the print button is replaced by a programmable button that can be used for mirror lockup.

It IS the rumor Forum.
So Corey, your best guess as to when we will hear the straight poop and the cameras will actually be released?
I was guessing February, but the closer we get, the less likely that seems. I have heard here from old timers that REAL semi-believable rumors begin coming out about a month before the actual release, due to Canon having to enlarge the group of the "in know" folks due to shipping, production schedules, etc. I certainly look forward to hearing, and still enjoy thread like this where we all guess.

PMA or the week before.

DIGIC III ? 10MP, dust-cleaning (not effective), 512Mb built in memory.

Why wasn't the 30D, 10MP-12MP and better DIGIC! I would have "snapped" that up! :-)
I hope they make it 12MP and better DIGIC so we can get a "cropped 5D" if we want! I'm looking to get the 5D this year but I bet they come out with a "better" version!
AND we have to wait 6 - 12 months for the premium price, which pays for the development enhancements and the next model, to come down!
Arggh! I may hop over to the US whilst we have the exchange rate near $2.00 and waste some money.

PMA or the week before.
Have you been through this previously... the let's guess what is coming out? I understand that the leaks are pretty slow, and often inaccurate, and about a month prior to the show, things start firming up. And an actual announcement might come out just prior to the PMA? PMA begins March 8th, I think, so come early March we might begin to hear some goodies about the new cameras and lenses by Canon?
Is there anything worthwhile for the average Joe to attend the PMA? I remember going to many MacWorlds in San Francisco where Apple would announce new stuff, I would walk the aisles of the vendors and get all kinds of free "junk." Nothing really, but lots of good info, a few token gifts, info on new stuff, just enough to make it worthwhile to attend and have fun. Do just common photographers attend these like the MacWorld conventions, where you attend just for fun of seeing stuff first hand? Or, is this only for the business pro side of the equation, business, business, business? Thanks for the info.

From general rumor consensus:
- New 4 channel sensor with 10.x MP (different from 400D, Low Noise)
- Still 1.6 crop
- Antidust (as per the 400D)
- Improved Viewfinder
- 1 stop improvement in high ISO (3200)
- Improved Autofocus (most likely the 5Ds 6 extra invisble AF points)
- DIGIC III image processing
- 5 FPS
- Better LCD (may be 3 inch, but clearer / brighter)
- Some are expecting / hoping for improved weather sealing (like the Pentax K10D and Nikon D200)
- Programable one or two new buttons to provide direct access to frequently used menu options
- CF memory
The medium dreamed machine ? :) :D

I had a D30 ;)
then the d60, 1d, 10d, 1ds, etc etc. This time of year gets ugly for those of us that have been around a while, and it gets worse each year. We get excited to see wahts new, but not the bombardment of 2nd guessing and measurebating that goes on.
Usually there is good proof before the show, but not long before.
I wouldn't fly to go to PMA, but if it was in my hometown I would go, you can potentially meet some greats and industry leaders and see what all is there, and sometimes take the new gear for a spin, though thats becoming less and less likely as the models aren't "done" yet at the show.

Rumors are that, rumors, but I agree that folks should know the difference, and spell it out when they are guessing, versus they have actually heard about a potential release. I still don't know what a measurebator is, but see it written by a few as some kind of derogatory word towards some other people here. What is a measurbatator and why are they loathed by a select few on this Forum?

LOL I wondered about that too. A measurebator is a derogatory reference coined by Ken Rockwell. Apparently, it has something to do with people who compare themselves to others (with themselves coming out on top of course).
I'm trying to find a solid definition... this is all I found so far.
"The measurebator is rendered as being so idiotic that no one--not even a genuine measurebator--would think of him or herself as one. The worst thing is that it invites ready rebuts--really nasty ones of the sort that regularly put self-righeous preachers in their place."
Semi-Definition of Measurebator
".... a person who uses his equipment to analyse its output by comparing resolution, noise, colour rendition, but takes less than five pictures a week of what is outside his house - this person is a "measurebator". "

Hear is my list for what I would like the "40D" to have
Same body size as to fit the BG-E2
10.5 MP (as to top off the market even the D200)
Digic III
5 fps
Dust Cleaning Sensor Even though I havent found that it actually works.
Larger Buffer
Spot Meter
Flash Stronger than a 220EX
1.6x Crop
13 or 17 AF points landscape/portrait
6400 ISO with less noise then 30D 3200 ISO
I would deffinately sell my Xti for this camera.

32 Mb would be of nearly no good as it would only be 3 RAW pictures

true, lets go with 512MB. Fuji & Samsung cameras are now sporting internal memory. It would be a blessing when you get that dreaded 'no CF' warning having driven 20 miles to a site.

If you've forgotten to bring a CF card then you should probably take another look at your pre-shoot checklist. ;)

I wouldn't want any internal memory, that's the whole reason we buy memory cards! I want the body to do exactly what it's supposed to do and nothing more. Internal memory would only drive up the cost.

Let's keep the memory external :)

If that all were true, and the price was less than $1500, my 20D would make someone a fine camera!

Let's go fantaaaaastic: 12mb sensor with 50% @ -3EV and 50% +3EV (or somenting similar). Will give better HDR at high and low ends and good mid-range. Of course Nikon owners will claim that it's not a 'proper' 12mb sensor - at least intil Nikon release their own.

Letīs see what of all these features comes true at the end; but if Canon has to make a splash in the middle segment to contra rest Noink & Sony and gain again market, it has to be in this way ... at a price around $1500.
Another way is to come up with a FF or near FF sensor in a lower end body at a good price....(no body else has FF yet in digital 35 mm I believe). So, probably this year is going to be a surprise box from manufacturers ... all competing ... may be by autumn the thing will be very competitive and interesting with new models a go go.
The lens market itīs very important to Canon, they sell a lot, and if thery loose share in the body market, thet are going to loose also in the lens market.

Heres what I would like to see to make me upgrade my 20D.
-10-12mp, but I dont really need them
-better AF, simmilar to what it has now but with sensors at intersecting therds, with more than one cross type sensors, at least 5
-weather sealing
-better dinamic range, Digic III maybe
-onboard flash to be off camera master and have a function to put the onboard flash to manual to prevent preflash
-anti-dust
-brighter viewfinder
-ISO shift? you set AV and TV camera sellects ISO, have the ISO in the viewfinder full time
-5 frames per second untill the card is full for jpg and at lest 50 for raw
- vertical shutter release and scroll wheel, like the photoshopped 3D would be a killer bonus.
