I know it’s a bit out of season, but I thought I would post this picture for constructive comment. Obviously closer would be better, but I was out on the observation deck behind left field. The picture was taken with a 30D and a 70-200 f/2.8

I don't have a great knowledge of baseball but IMHO I don't think that you needed to be any closer for this shot as you seem to have captured a great action shot with all the necessary elements in it. I don't think that you always have to be tight in to the action to have a good picture, as this just proves.
1 question though...was he out?:)

Hey, that's a great shot espcially from left field. I have the same lens along with a
1.4TC. It's good tp know that if I needed to shoot behind left field, I could still get some pretty good shots.

I've taken mine several times and never had a problem getting in with my camera. At the time, i had a dreb with my 70-200mm 2.8 - in a tamrac backpack...just had me open for inspection as i entered...

Billshack: Thanks for sharing – are these from the “victory parade”?
Movol: Nice picture – I wonder if Chris Carpenter will start spelling his name with a “K”
Basroil: I was able to go to three games last year and I brought my camera bag every time. They ask you to open it up at the gate, but they didn’t seem to have a problem with the 70-200 lens. If you’re familiar with the new stadium, you can walk around the “observation deck” area behind left field relatively unrestricted. There’s another decent location near the first base line, but it’s generally more crowded.
If you go to the game early, very early, you can get in to watch batting practice. I was able to walk down to the first and third base walls to take pictures of the players warming up. You might even get an autograph if you’re looking for one. The premium seating area directly behind home plate is usually “off-limits” without a ticket to those seats.

Woot!!! Go Cards. unfortunatley I had take this inside at night with the 100-400 as I didn't have my 70-200 2.8 then so they are a bit soft from noise reduction.
