Some local citizens (who just happen to have an almost unlimited revenue) have decided to restore this old civil war cemetery. The old stone wall was just as they found it and they located the graves and put the crosses labeled 'Unknown But to God' on them (if they didn't know who was there). There were some old head stones and markers there too. I took these on an overcast day after it had been raining for a few days. The feeling was erie to say the least. It is definately sacred ground.

Very interesting how did they locate the graves if there were no markers? I have heard of excavating the top few inches of soil in order to see where the soil has been disturbed over the years and also find where the graves are.

A caretaker for a cemetery in an old California gold mining town told me that they use xray technology to locate the exact locations of grave sites. There's some kind of device they run over the ground that gives an image of what is underneath. I don't remember all the details, because it's been a few years since he told me about this, but that's the basic idea.

And, of course, I love these pictures. That looks like my kind of place to visit and explore.

Thanks to both for the replies. I think they probably used ground penetrating radar to locate the graves. I don't know the exact method but I am assuming that's just one of the ways they found them.

It's a really cool place to walk around. There's another one that's supposedly a slave cemetery from the same era close by too...I'll have to get over there one day and snap some shots of that one too.

I'll have to find out how they do all of it and get back to you. It is very interesting and somewhat mysterious how these things are done sometimes.

Thanks again for looking and take care. Hopefully more to come soon!

Yeah, I think that's what the caretaker told me! Radar, not x-ray...
