A couple shots from today's unrated state chess championship that my boys participated in. Decided to test my new lenses indoors... the first with the Canon 10-22 and the second with the Canon 100 f/2.8 Macro. Outdoors, indoors, landscape or macro, these lenses are just great! :D

Apparently the organizers and the participants of the recently held 15th Asian Games, 2006, that took place in Qatar, thought so.

Chess competitions take place along with swimming, archery, track, Judo, etc. It may very well be an Olympic event in the near future, as well.

Love the young lad’s expression in pic 2, maybe a tighter crop around the two players!

I thought about that initially, but I was afraid of the noise due to heavy cropping... See how this turned out:

I don't know how to explain why some can view and some can't...

Anyone out there with the answer to this problem?

Competition? Absolutely. Sport? Certainly could be debated IMHO.

Don't get me wrong. I love it the game. My son was ranked 3rd for his age in CA several years ago. He's gone halfway across the country to compete with his 'team', so I have seen the same scenario countless times. I just don't know if I consider the participants 'athletes' or the competition a 'sport'.

As for the shots, I really like cropped version of 'the stare'. Some of those kids are wise way beyond their years and use a lot of gamesmanship while competing. I'm guessing they tolerated your shooting (not to mention presence) because it is an unrated tournament?

Olympic Chess? Hmmmmmmmmm.......

Jeff

Thanks for looking and your comments. Yes, before the competition they usually outline the rules covering everything, including the rules of taking pictures. So it was a relief to be able to take pictures freely without being self-conscious...

My boys will be participating in the rated state championship as well coming up in mid February. I think they're ready to make the transition from unrated to rated, so we've recently joined the US Chess Federation. I do not know about the photography rules in the rated tournament. I assume they're completely out...

Thanks! :D

Yes, I'm very proud of both my boys as any parent would. The younger one swept all 5 matches in his 2nd Grade division, while his older brother got the 4th place in his 4th Grade division in spite of winning 4 matches and 1 loss due to tiebreaker system... The main thing is that they're having fun and being happy kids!! :D

sport yes, athletics no. why do we call auto racing a sport? chess is great for kids, teaches all kinds of valuable lessons

Thanks, David. :D

One of the things I try to do with my kids' involvement in chess is to connect all the lessons they learn in chess to the real life lessons. Instead of impulsive actions, they're already more deliberate and analytical in their decision-makings...

Unless you're talking about radio control auto racing or video game auto racing: Because it takes a great deal of coordination, (sometimes) strength and physical endurance in sometimes horrid environments. That's not to mention extreme physical danger.

I would wager that most professional auto racers are at least as fit as most professional golfers and a round of golf is nowhere near as physically taxing as an auto race, yet no one (including me) has any qualms about calling golf a sport.

A point of view on the topic:

Just learned that you have to log into the forum WITHOUT the "www" -- that is, http://photography.... in order to see the images.
