I am looking to buy some good glass lens. I am going to photography soccer maybe played at night...I have the 75-300 f4.5-5.0..which I can use. I have used this lens but I feel that I need a tripod for it....I have been looking at the 70-200 IS f2.8 lens...Would that get me close enough to take some good photographs. It is my understanding that this lens I can even use for portrait taking....hope to hear....widget

The 70-200 is a great lens, ideally you could use some longer glass such as a 300 or 400 2.8 .
With the 70-200 you will need to pick your moment to shoot, wait for the action to come to you.

What is your budget?
Another lens to consider is the 300mm f4 IS by Canon but if you do any night work I'd prefer the 70-200 2.8 as Marc suggested
Then there is the Sigma 120-300 but this may be over your budget.
The 70-200 2.8 is so versatile so you could apply it to many other sports as well as footie.

For soccer I would not go any shorter than 300mm. The 300mm f/4 is fine for daylight, but won't cut it at night. I would go with either the Canon 300 f/2.8 or the Sigma 120-300. If you don't have good lighting even the f/2.8 lenses are going to struggle.
I have heard tell some use the 70-200 for portraits, it is a fine lens. But it would not be my first choice. I used to use that lens for soccer, but found it to be to short. Adding a TC for day time shooting helped, but at night you need fast glass and high ISO.
