Hi,
Tried to post an image & url, but HTML is still turned off. Does anyone know how long this lasts, or is it a variable?
Thanks,
FC

My guess would be forever. You're supposed to use BBCode, not HTML. When you're posting a message, there's a "[bbcode help]" link under the text box. Click that and it'll show you how to include URL's, images, etc.

If you post a web URL then the board will automatically make it a link. Like this, which is now clickable: "http://www.google.com" becomes http://www.google.com

If you wish an image to be viewed in the message, then put the URL between "" tags.

[img] url goes here

Well, I thought I did that in the posts here:
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=26678
Here's exactly what the image 'code' was, except that I've removed the beginning & end "[" so it won't register here.

Maybe you can see where I went wrong.
Thanks

You get direct hotlinkable url if you look at pictures' properties, it's a bit different from those you tried:

http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/efc593d4/bc/Sample/__sr_/5df7.jpg?phNaLTABwFcIRPL7

Well, here we go with more questions...

1. Do you mean:
****://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/efc593d4/bc/Sample/__sr_/5df7.jpg?phNaLTABwFcIRPL7

I see that it's a completly diferent URL than the one I entered.
A. Why? It doesn't link to a page. It links to a pic directly.
B. How did you get it?

2. Why didn't this work?
img]http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/fjcizek/detail?.dir=/Sample&.dnm=5df7.jpg[/img

3. Why is 'yours' better than 'mine'?

4. Or, to save answering all of those, please just tell me what's wrong with the "img tags" that I tried to use, because the URL tags didn't work either. Your 'fix' doesn't affect them!

Just had a thought (my one for the day). Are we supposed to press <Enter> after putting in the tags? Like this?
img]
http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/fjcizek/detail?.dir=/Sample&.dnm=5df7.jpg
[/img

I didn't do that.
Thanks,

Yahoo may not allow links like this. Jyrgen's image didn't post either.

There is a way (many, really) for someone to set their web server up so that it will not show a picture unless their own web server was the one that requested it - so if a Yahoo page requests the image, it displays, but if a photography-on-the.net page requests the image, it's denied. It's often done to stop image stealing, but more importantly to stop bandwidth stealing.

never try to link to an image that is in a page.
right-click on the image and select properties at the bottom of the pop up menu - this should give you the real url of just the image

Yahoo may not allow links like this.

I'm pretty sure they don't allow direct linking.

Looks as if we've been all posting at the same time! Can't say that there isn't any activity on this forum!

Now that I've caught up,
Scottes: "Yahoo may not allow links like this. Jyrgen's image didn't post either."
Wha? I just saw it, didn't I? Do you mean that it wasn't there before, but has come up since your post?

evilenglishman: OK, I see where you got the URL from. But I've noticed that the images that you & jyrgen posted came up in different sizes. Its 354 X 480, & one is larger w/the msg "(FORUM INFO: unknown image size, forced to 500 pixels wide)".
Any idea why that happened?

@#$%*!
Now I've got THREE DIFFERENT links going to the same pic...
mine from Properties:
http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/efc593d4/bc/Sample/__sr_/5df7.jpg?ph02MTABroowRPL7
evilenglishman's from his first post
http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/efc593d4/bc/Sample/__sr_/5df7.jpg?phX_LTABp1Q8RPL7
and another one that (I think) I got earlier from Properties:
http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/efc593d4/bc/Sample/__sr_/5df7.jpg?phBcMTABGLnWRPL7

OK, I think I see what's happening, but don't understand it - seems that every I get the pics Properties, it changes??? I just got this one, also different:
http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/efc593d4/bc/Sample/__sr_/5df7.jpg?phFBNTABKIkGRPL7
Then I tried again & got another:
http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/efc593d4/bc/Sample/__sr_/5df7.jpg?phGPNTABUn7XRPL7
Wierd!

If these links are "variable", I wonder how long they will last in a post.

Anyway, thanks for the help guys. Maybe Scottes & thomascanty hit on the problem when they said "Yahoo may not allow links like this."

Just checked them all again. This minute they all worked from the forum except evilenglishman's from his first post
http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/efc593d4/bc/Sample/__sr_/5df7.jpg?phX_LTABp1Q8RPL7
Isn't this fun?

I see EvilEnglishman's. Garethhhhhhhhhh's and Jyrgen's are blank, and when I click on them I get "host phvrf.yahoo.com not found".

But EE is right - it looks like you were linking the page - it won't work. Try linking the image. Go to your Yahoo page, right click on the image and "View Image" - you should get a page with the image on it, nothing else. THAT URL is what you want to put between the img tags.

I thinks the problem is that the name of the image is different for each user that tries to view it.

I can see my image but not EE's & Jyrgen's, the same is probably true for them. Yahoo is just being an a**!

For each of us the beginning of the link is the same eg. http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/efc593d4/bc/Sample/__sr_/5df7.jpg

It gets a little funny after that

EE gets: ?phX_LTABp1Q8RPL7
Jyrgen gets: ?phNaLTABwFcIRPL7
and I get: ?phXWMTABiMRsRPL7

:?

Want my advice, switch to another host, Yahoo obviously doesn't allow linking...

The reason some of you can see the pic is because you visited the page it was on and the pic is in your cache..

For anyone hitting this thread that has not visited the Yahoo page first.. we can not and will never see the images you are trying to embed.

Yahoo doesn't allow the embeding of the image,.

you will have to just post a link to the page.

After Garethhhhhh's post with the crazy links - which are CGI queries somehow - I'd have to say that CDS is right. Yahoo no linkee.

garethhhhh

the pic is in your cache...

Yeah, I have to do a disk cleanup every couple of days otherwise all the pictures I see in this forum start building up in my cache (temporary internet files) and waste my disk space :(

PhotosGuy

Lots of brainpower working on this!
All the images have been flushed from the forum, so I guess that they were all in my cache.

Tried Scootes fix: " Try linking the image. Go to your Yahoo page, right click on the image and "View Image" - you should get a page with the image on it, nothing else. THAT URL is what you want to put between the img tags."

It didn't work, I got the same 'cache codes'. My reasoned response is that Yahoo sucks!
So I guess I'll just have to use the URL & find another place to store pics for easy viewing.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Why not just set the cache size limit? I lock mine at 50 Mb - this seems to hold about 5 days of browsing. I should probably go a lot larger since I browse so many pictures around here. Yep, went to 100.

Yeah, yahoo is not hot linkable. If you want the image to show up in the post, you'll have to use a service that allows direct linking.

www.fotopic.net is a free one that will allow it.

Thanks, I didn't know you could do that! :D
