View Full Version : 10D Focal problems

Hello guys, this is probably already being discussed somewhere but after searching 800 threads I kind of gave up on my search and decided to post a new one. I just bought a 10D and was used to a D60 which unfortunately suffered a fried circuit board (don't ask). The focussing on the D60 was always pin point accurate with my sigma 105 macro lens. With the 10D, on autofocus it seems to focus just before the subject, blurring the main subject itself. When I use the Canon 28-135 IS lens, the focal point seems to be just behind the subject with rather similar results. Are there any easy ways around this rather than having to guess the accurate distance for the subject to be in focus?

I've got a 10D and the Sigma 105 and it's dead one - when it decides to focus.
I ran a test for a friend who thought his 10D was having problems focusing with my 105, which he had borrowed for a week. I took his 10D and my 105 and set up a deck of playing cards and auto-focused on one and took a picture and flipped to Manual Focus. I added a card, click, added another, click, and then AF'd again, and started subtracting cards.
It was quickly obvious that his "problem" was user error. Not that I'm saying your problem is user error, but it was an easy way to test.
However, here's a more "scientific" approach while remaining pretty easy. http://www.photo.net/learn/focustest/

Which is the dead one? The camera or the lens?

They both have the same lens, so it's the lens...

I think he meant "Dead On"
I like the "Card Trick" :)
I'll remember that as a last resort should I ever have a desire to shoot a ruler

I don't do rulers no more. Oranges are the new wave in focus testing

To really test a camera's focus capabilities, one should include both apples and oranges. ;)

Sorry, I meant "Dead On"
Darn E's get me sometimes. Some are silent, some aren't, some single long-E, some double long-E, whatever. This language is crazy. Why do you have a pair of pants but only one bra? Why park in a driveway, but drive on a parkway? Why do they call them buildings when they're already built? This language is crazy, I tell you.
I refused to shoot a ruler for this test. I mean, come on, measurbating with someone else's equipment? ? ?
I used cards.
I *did* include diamonds and clubs, so it was a fair test.

Just be thankful it's not French or else you'd REALLY be in trouble, eh?

Oh, BTW, Kees, my suggestion is for you to take or send the 10D and the lens (the Canon lens, that is) to the Canon repair center if you feel that you have a focusing problem, which I believe you do if you say that the lens focuses fine on your D60.
