I need a bit of advice from the wise patrons of POTN. My older Sigma 28-70's focusing motor died. It was my main walk around lense for my Elan II and hasn't been used in several years. It worked when I put it away, but now that I have a Rebel XTi, I brought it out and found it didn't work! Now I'm in a pickle because I didn't get a kit lense knowing I had the 28-70 f2.8. The repair estimate is $250 US. I can't decide to repair or replace.
Keep in mind a few things when making your recommendations: this is not the newer EX DG lense, but 1998 vintage; I just spent $1,400 on the XTi, Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro, and a 430EX flash; and I just retired from the military and I'm starting a new business! Therefore, I don't want to spend more than about $350 or so on a lense else I'd just repair this one. I don't mind buying a good used lense, though.
I also have an older Canon 75-300 f4-5.6 IS to round out the stable. The replacement or repaired lense would be used mostly for travel photography, landscapes, airshows (static shots), pets/animals (like zoos), a few "snapshots" and similar general photos.
