I just took posession of a lightly used (mint cond) 100-400 F4.5/5.6 IS lens that I purchased on eBay and then waited a painful week for as it slowly crossed the country via UPS ground.
OH MY GOD! I had no idea what an incredible lens this was, and how wonderful IS really is. I am now seriously thinking about selling my 70-200F2.8L and buying an IS version.
I love it! Can't wait to capture some worthy images to post.

Congrats.
After seeing the results of IS on my 100-400, I did exactly what you are thinking of. I sold my Sigma 70-200 F2.8 and bought a 70-200 IS. A little heavier but worth it.

I've been toying with the Idea of a 100-400 IS too.. Isn't it lighter than the 70-200mm IS ?
It would be nice to have a hand held lens in that range... 8)

You are right. The 100-400 is 90 grams lighter or 3.1746566 oz  Basically a tea bag or two

IanD, I've noticed you are from Montreal; where have you bought your lens? I am tempted to by one but the price in Canadian stores, even from web dealers is hard to digest. I may buy from the US, used or new and even with the customs and all, I think I would gain some $$. Oh, by the way, I live in Magog and work on the south shore of Montreal.
Thanks
Michel

Is the 100-400 a zoom that grows when you zoom it, or is the physical length set and it zooms internally ?
In addition, is the 100-400 a twist zoom or a push pull ?
These are the sort of things they don't tell you in the catalogus...
Cheers

The 100-400 is a push-pull zoom and, yes, it does get longer when you zoom in. I actually didn't notice how long it grew until I saw pictures of it zoomed out to 400mm. I guess you really can't tell when you're behind the camera.

A great lens. Had it about 2 months. All I can say is good things.

Michel,
Good to see another Canuck in here.
I buy a lot of my gear at L Lozeau in Montreal and another good online source is www.cameracanada.com.

Yeah, the length is something to watch out for, to some. I'm getting used to the push-pull, and like it better than than the twist of my 70-200 because you don't change your grip. However when you go from 100 to 400, all of a sudden your arm is much further away from your body. I have a tendency to tuck my arm to my chest - rifle shooting pose - and the zooming changes that.
I've also done some close-ups on tripod, camera tilted, and the zoom lengthening creates a different balance point. It's not too bad, but with a hood and 500D on the front it's noticable if you're near the extreme of tilt or tripod extension.

It is an impressive piece of equipment when cranked all the way out. You just have to remember how long it is and try not to whack someone in the head if you turn around quickly.

Shooting at RAF Mildenhall a few years back this kid was running about through the crowd and generally being a pain to everyone -anyway he ran straight into the 100-400, strange thing was he seemed a little stunned by the experience hehe
