dragging out a couple of shots which never got airing...these two acts were the openers for noted Dutch anarch-punkers The Ex, and were fairly radically different, musically (which can be nice). first up, Aloha.
i knew nothing of these guys before the show, but they write fairly intricate pop songs and rotate steadily among instruments, aside from the bass player. nice, gentle melodies, good texture w/ the vibes and keyboards. solid band.

next up was turntablist DJ/Rupture. he's a barcelona-based artist, and maintains an active blog (http://www.negrophonic.com/). i'd never shot a DJ (nor seen live) before, so i wasn't really sure what to expect. i dug it. i know he's been active w/ Andy Moor (from the Ex), so that's probably how he got on the tour.

Hahahaha. Love the toilet paper
Also like the first and fourth shot very much.

thanks René - the aloha guys dug 'em too, and i gave one of them for their myspace page.
shooting DJ/Rupture was a bit tough, as it was a very static situation (both in lighting and general movement from him); i tried to focus on various details which were interesting (like the toilet paper isolaters), but the only pic i really like was the 1st one, w/ the reflection off the record.

Good going Narlus, the first shot is my fav, its brilliant. i think it is spot on with framing, and the Compo is great aswell.
Nice set

1 & 4 are my favorites of this set too. As a rookie still trying to learn the best ways to compose my shots, I have a question regarding #4. If that had come out of my camera as you have it, I'd be tempted to crop off at least to the mic stand on the left, probably 4x5 crop. However the more I look at it the more I kind of like the empty space towrds the left, it sort of isolates the drummer a bit more than cropping would. Was it a conscious decision to crop it like you did?

in terms of the crop, i'm pretty sure i left it as is rather than cropping (the original RAW file is at home, so i can't check right now). the shot itself was a bit noisy, and if i cropped to solely the drummer, i think it would lose some punch. i kinda liked the blue/green lens flare on the leftside as well, so i left it as is.
thanks for the comments everyone.

Yes, definitely like No 1. and No 4.
Maybe No 7, but missing that left hand. However I like No 7.

thanks! for Aloha, [edit -#1 and #4 were taken w/ the 50], and for DJ/Rupture it was a mix of the 50 and 85.

Oh, my, that first shot is an utterly superb composition although I think a touch cool so I am uploading a slight revision for your consideration. And, I, too, really find the DJ images enlightening and fun ... I'm overjoyed to see vinyl still lives!

Given the opportunity, you certainly shine with the capture on #1.
Composition of each is real good too, while #5 stands out for me...

I was about to write the exact same thing about the composition of #1 as Dwight did above. Very nice to see such depth in a concert photo - something where many of us have things to learn. Getting more than one "layer" in a concert photo makes them often really interesting.
