Racing photographer Art Flores was found dead in his home in Alameda, California, today by his sister and brother-in-law.
"When we found him he had had his hand resting on the 2nd page of the American Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association (AARWBA) June 2003-2004 Membership Directory," said Pat Flores. "I know many of the folks in the directory were some of his dearest friends. It brings me so much comfort that those people were with him on some level at the moment of his death.
"The coroner felt the cause of death was probably a heart attack. They did not feel the need to do an autopsy nor did I. The plans are to have him cremated. He always wanted some of his ashes spread at Laguna Seca and Ireland. I will also spread some at my folks gravesite and a special place where I want my ashes placed.
"We're thinking of requesting people to make donations in Art's honor to anything that will help defeat George Bush. He was quite livid about where George was taking our country. He has always liked John Kerry. He was quite funny how he wore a pin depicting George Sr. and George Jr. with a quote beneath their pictures that said 'Dum and Dummer.' I saw him with one all last week."
Flores was the Photo Steward for the AARWBA, and a well-known photographer in both the Champ Car World Series and the Indy Racing League. He shot photos for AutoWeek for many years.
He was also the Executive Vice-President of the Motor Sports Press Association, a northwestern U.S. organization of writers and photographers.
"He championed the rights of photographers through many years as a member of AARWBA and the American Racing Press Association," said Racing Information Systems Editor Michael F. Hollander. "His work has appeared in many, many magazines over the years. His voice for reason and freedom to shoot will be missed."
In accordance with Art's wishes, services are at the Starry Plough, an Irish Pub in Berkeley, CA, at 4pm on Sunday. The address is 3101 Shattuck Ave. Berkeley, CA 94705 ( Between Ashby and Alcatraz ) (510) 841-2082 .[/img]
