Hi,
Is a lens collar necessary for a 100-400mm lens on a 10D and tripod/monopod.
Are there any cheaper alternatives to Canon collars?
Thanks
John.

The 100-400 comes with a lens collar (tripod ring). The 70-200 f/4 does not come with one, but that's the only 'white' lens I'm aware of that doesn't. (The 100mm f/2.8 macro doesn't either, but it isn't white.)

Great. Thought I was going to have to cough up even more money to Canon.
Thanks.

I wouldnt use the 100-400L IS on a tripod w/o a lens collar.
thats a good bit of weight being imposed on the camera body w/o a collar being attached if you're using a tripod.

the collar that comes with the lens is great. It might fit the 70-200 also

Pretty hard to use the 100-400 on a monopod or tripod without attaching it to the collar, tooooo much weight out front.
