we considered DJ, as he had just shot my roomies wedding and did a great job, but he had a shoot the day before and after our wedding.

These days I would have tried for [b] or jessica strickland.

In the end we hired our friends who run a local wedding and portrait studio to do it, and they did a good job, though I'm not sure it was what we were totally looking for. Very traditional and posed, some what our own fault for picking Dec 30 as our date and that it was raining out.

If I had to choose someone on this forum (sorry if I haven't seen your work), I would choose one of 3 people. Mizuno, Jason Cole or DJ. All of these people, I would choose because I personally love their style and love the way they represent themselves in the forums as well, so therefore I could trust they would represent themselves appropriately at my event. :-) Anyone in the world? Hmmm.. would love a really scenic wedding.. so I will go with a non wedding photographer: Ansel Adams

Who would you hire to shoot YOUR wedding?

I don't know, but it sure as hell wouldn't be my wife's friends who shot our "wedding" eight years ago with disposable cameras and 35mm point and shoots.

On the bright side, we got some nice studio portraits we paid an arm and a leg for.

Jeff Ascough (www.jeffascough.com (http://www.jeffascough.com)) his work is amazing!I just looked through a lot of his gallery. OMG! Looking at his shots, makes me want to try to try to render an entire day as B&W, just as an exercise. These were awesome!

Toogy, Mizuno, Jamie, and a few others here (my memory's going, i'm getting old). Locally I like www.jvk.co.nz and www.rdphotography.co.nz , both among the best in the country.

Yervant makes weddings work around him, rather than working around the wedding, from what i've seen. He makes amazing images, just not for my wedding.

I KNEW you'd see that post! And I still would love to have you shoot my wedding. In the real world, I could never afford those two. Beckstead alone charges 10K per wedding! I'd hate to see what Yervant wants.

I'd have Jamison do mine. Either that or put a hidden camera in the bride's tiara & fire it remotely with a trigger in my pocket.

Going against the grain here, again  - I'd go with one of the local guys in my area. I've seen their work and they know me, the town and it's venues, what I like... plus I could afford them and wouldn't get ripped off  There's a nice tradition of extending courtesy to each other here if we get in a jam or need an assist.

If I couldn't get a local guy, I'd pick one of you. There is some REALLY fine work here - links to some excellent galleries, done by some good, solid, decent folk whose work shows integrity. You charge fair and haven't let the craft go to your heads.;)

I absolutely agree. My post was more "thinking aloud" than responding to the OP's question *sorry*. I'm always thinking about my own work this way too.

As for the original question - - I just don't know. I think that I would have to go with someone local, and who's work I admire like:
Brody Dezember
Kelly Sansom
Davina Fear
. . . just to name a few.

I'm still agonizing over what to do with my son's wedding in August. I would love to shoot it myself, but can't since I'm the mother of the groom and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. But I think I will do that "driving around DC" with wedding couple shoot in between the ceremony and the reception. I'm seriously considering having the whole thing catered and have it at a hall so I can do the shooting. But really, there are so many of you here, if you lived closer, would be on my list. I think a few of you are actually in Maryland.

I really did pick someone. My wedding is coming up in October and I picked Shawn Starr (you know where to put the www and the com). I had to pick long distance, but love his personality through email. It is important to me to have a photographer who fits in with my friends and makes everyone feel comfortable. Of course, if the images come out looking like Bambi Cantrell's, that's great, too. I guess it could be who would we pick to photograph the wedding AND whose team of post production editors to glamorize us.

I just saw this post

WOW thank you g-money and honestly I am a STRONG believe when it comes to the photography business, be it children, seniors, family or weddings the photography results are the least important aspect of the business. To many photographers put a stress on how good they are when in reality if you build a relationship with your client and become their friends and not just hired help the photography both good and bad will be loved by the family. I feel the same goes towards other photographers, friendship, sharing and learning in the process is truly the best way to grow and reach whatever aspect of this amazing art you want to reach. So thank you for the kind words, (I know I wrote a book here) but I did not want to think they went unnoticed!

Just visited Jeff Ascough's site and I have to say, I really learned how to hide what would otherwise be unacceptable noise: convert everything to B&W! Then it looks like old Ilford or Trimax film. His choice of images for his gallery were quite incredible, btw; lots of great candids and emotion.

If you like the look of film (I LOVE it) his BW conversions are amazing. There's a lot admire about him. All wedding photographers say they "capture the moment" but no does it like him. He doesn't create contrived moments, he captures real emotions as they happen. He also rarely, if ever, uses flash- even in bright daylight.

Ok, Ok lets select yervant as a guru or some higher being :)

His work is amazing but i don't know him personally, so he would not be my choice for my wedding, i am already married but beside great portfolio don't people go with a wedding photographer that they are most comfortable with?

We live in multi cultural world and especially in North America that's how it works, people look for photographers in their own community first and than shop for others. Right?

Well that's the question I'm asking and this place is always good for advice and info. Sadly the Jeff Ascough's of the world seem to be a little over my budget, but it's nice to be exposed to people of the board's work!

If nothing else it's useful to see different styles, but choosing someone is so damn hard. I'm not great at photography (yet) or anything, but I am trying to find the right person who I would feel safe doing such a job. Over a year to go, but decent UK photographer suggestions welcomed!!!

Yes, I noticed the lack of flash in 95% of the shots I saw on his site. Not sure why he's averse to it but it definitely gives his images an old-school feel. I used to be wary of flash, too, thinking it was contrary to the PJ style I employ at weddings... but then I learned how to incorporate a little flash into my images and make it very un-noticeable and now I won't shoot a wedding without my speedlites. I am always looking to capture emotion during a wedding but sometimes the venue is just too dark and the level of noise on my 5Ds is simply too much to consider anything over 1250 ISO, imho.
