I mentioned to an aquaintance that I use a Canon 380 EX flash. His response was, "Oh, one of those!" and he didn't fill in the blanks, but I got the impression there is something wrong with this model of flash. Any info would be appreciated. This flash was discontinued soon after I purchased mine.
Thanks in advance,
Stever

Nothing wrong with it at all - it's just rather basic in comparison with the 420EX or 550EX guns that's all.
Lower power and no manual options, tilt only and no swivel - butit's still an E-TTL gun and if the power output and pointing options suit your needs, it'll be fine.
Just ignore equipment snobs ;-)

You aquaintance, is he a Nikon user? Is he a pro that frowns upon anything less than a 550EX? Is he a pro that frowns upon anything that can't be set to manual? Is he a wanna-be-pro?
What equipment does he have?
As far as I know, there's nothing wrong with the 380EX.

I've got a 380EX.. I've had it for years. I've used it on two other Canon cameras I owned.
The 380EX was discontinued and replaced with the 420EX..
Since I take mostly daytime outdoor nature and wildlife shots, I rarely use it, so I've had no real need to upgrade the flash. It works fine taking family snapshots or providing a touch of fill..
I would like it to be able to swivel left right instead of just up/down But other than that it serves my needs.. It's far better than the built in flash :)

It's junk. I don't want to see you burdened with it any further, so just pack it up and send it to me. :)

I have had one for seven or eight years. Works great. I recently upgraded to more powerful and versatile flashes for my DSLR's, but continue to use the 380 with my G2.
Fits the camera reasonably well and takes great pictures.
That's about all you can ask.

I have found it to be the best buy I have made. Got it on E-bay used 3 years ago. Works like a champ. Lately I have been using it in high speed sync with some pretty good luck. It has nice power, but lacks the ability to use an external bat pack...so recycle can be slow. But I like it...
...and you know what.....I am going to use it on my Mark II also!!
