...been beaten to death 10 times over on this forum?? Many folks are asking the same things that a simple search to a discussion just 2 months ago will cover. No longer is this forum providing valuable information (except for the cool tip thread) on how to's, and why does this happen, and what's the new software out there that will kick some tail.

Yes, I do realize I could just turn my head and not read this anymore, and lately, I just check back once a week now when it used to be daily or 3 times a day. Is the market that dead? Has all the info on how to get better shots from 10D been exhausted? Or, we are all experts now and have nothing to share except ask questions about lenses?!

Bombs awayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

So, do I win a prize? :)

Now, which lens do you think I should buy?

Hmmm, looks like you could use a good 70-200/2.8L and a 100-400L. And, although this is not a lens, a good flash like the 420EX or the 550EX.

Now, aren't you glad we're not charging you for all these sound and useful advices that you find in the forum?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I ask about a Canon 100-300mm f/x.x lens, will not the lens specs and info be the same today as it was 2 months ago?

Software, firmware, etc - up to date info, yes, I agree and I don't see that anymore.

From now on, it will cost forum members 5 cents to read my posts.

I haven't made up my mind on a flash yet - so in the meantime, the only flash I will take is from Paris Hilton.

I think the forum would be alot more informative and less irritating to those of us who are here all the time if everyone did a "search" first. Then the questions would deal more with new ideas and explanations instead of "Why should I buy L Glass?"

Pretty much.

We're all waiting for your 1D Mk IIs to be delivered. As soon as that happens, we can go back to discussing front focus, back focus, and how we wish we still had pop-up flashes.

I posted a very similar subject a month or so ago. A simple search would have found that one too  .

I have learned to live with the human tendency to get the simple answer and not have to put too much effort into it. Like you said, I just look the other way on subjects that don't interest me.

While you guys are waiting for the 1DII, I think you can get ahead of the game by doing some searches on all those topics (front focus, custom settings, cf write speed, etc.) and just substitute "1DII" where ever you see "10D" or "1D". If any "300D" or "DRebel" pops up, just click next since they won't apply!

Why don't we do something about it? When someone asks a BTD Question (Beaten to Death) let's tell them to do a search, with a little help.

The other day someone asked about the Manfrotto Flexhead and if it was any good. My answer:

There was a thread not too long ago where just about everyone said it was useless. Try a search for "flexhead"

The next post was "Thanks" and that was the end of thread. Alas, I realize now it was "flex neck" in the original post. Harumph. But I tried, and the thread died quickly.

But we can do something about BTD Questions. And we don't have to be complete jerks about it either.

I'd much rather see a "What about these 2 lenses?" rather than "What lens should I buy?" If someone's willing to do some research themselves then I'm more willing to help.

The whole point of a forum/online community is that it constantly develops.
New people come along with new thoughts and ideas, some people disappear, new gear comes out etc.

Of course someone who joins tomorrow will ask a similar question you might have asked when you joined.

Not everyone has an in depth knowledge of how forums work, they might think that search button goes to google. Who knows.

If you personally don't get anything new from the posts, why not help out others who are new? A link here, a tip there. it all helps - moaning doesn't :P

You paid 2c to type that, but it cost you 5c to read this, so you're out 7c.

I agree. I wish more posts dealt with "out of the box" thinking. New ideas, cool processing tips, accidents that turned into processes, etc.

While I value the advice of many folks such as yourself and remember them, I also like to hear new ideas and experiences.

I recently was reading up on how to attach my web camera to my telescope, hoping to buy a product, several folks came up with using PVC plumbing pipe and removing the lens on the camera to do so. Rather than pay $50 for the same type of attachment, I made that one for less then $5. It's these types of ideas that make owning a 10D fun and useful. Granted, I dont think I have a good use for PCV on my 10D, but you get the idea. I think someone posted something a ways back about remote shutter firing from inside the house while the camera is outside and how they made it. Now that is just plain cool!

Yep, and when they come up with the "What about these 2 lenses?" then it's time to let them know about the new one that just came out.

I don't think that just telling them to Search is the answer - hell no. But a little help and a nudge towards the Search is often appropriate.

Okay, here's a PVC pipe project for you.

Take a 12' piece of 3/4" PVC pipe. Attache a rubber finger to the end of it. Set your camera up outdoors, but within 12' of the window. You can sit in the house and press the shutter release button through the window.

No finicky electronics to worry about.

Actually, that's an interesting exercise. My first actual post was some obscure comment that doesn't bear repeating, but the first thread I started on my own had the very clever title: Sigma 17-35.

I think the first paragraph of my post is worth repeating because it was so prophetic. (and written long before I single-handedly undertook to double the U.S. trade defecit with Japan).

I bought my 10D about a month ago and bought the 28-135 IS at that time. About a week after that, I bought a 75-300 IS. By this time, the credit card was starting to wheeze, and I still didn't have a wide-angle solution in my bag.

I now have a wide-angle solution, and a bunch of other solutions that I couldn't afford then or now. Beyond the general heading of 'defecit spending,' I have absolutely no idea what happened.

I think anybody who posts a reply to somebody's question should be given an extra count or two in their "number of posts" stats. And when the count reaches 5000, we should be given a blue stamp worth 5 "blue stamp" points. Collect 5000 blue stamp points and convert it to something useful, like maybe a pencil or a stick of bubble gum.

Not all of us n00bs clobber the boards with repitive topics. I've read here every day since I first found the site, and have learned a ton, and have gotten most of my specific questions answered via the links thread or the search function.

Just so you know that there those of us who do it right.

And since I'm here anyway, mucho gracias and domo arigato to Pekka and all you wise and learned photographers that have expanded my horizons.

And one last thing: I want to get a 70-200 L F4 and a teleconverter, but I heard that the 2x one will preclude my use of AF, but I fear the 1.4x will not give me enough reach and force me to crop too much and lose the benefit of the superterrific L glass and then I will want to sell my firstborn into white slavery to buy a 100-400 L and my wife will get really upset and blah blah blah...

Buying lenses is all about incrementalism. You have to do it in steps. The 2x TC isn’t all that bad, but it will kill two full f-stops, and you will have autofocus problems. If you’re starting at f/4, your minimum aperture is going to be f/8. If you can live with that, go for it. I’d personally recommend the 1.4X. It lets your camera be much better behaved.

So how about a sign-up post, then? A sticky post where people can say "I'm going to take the `Which Donkey` question."

I'd suggest that people honor the first poster to grab a question, and that people can also say "I'll help with that one" and then proof-read and/or confirm, as well as add info or research if necessary.

So no single person has to do a ton of work, and all CDS has to do is make a post sticky - though we all will have to proof-read his typing.

...been beaten to death 10 times over on this forum?? Many folks are asking the same things that a simple search to a discussion just 2 months ago will cover. No longer is this forum providing valuable information (except for the cool tip thread) on how to's, and why does this happen, and what's the new software out there that will kick some tail.

Yes, I do realize I could just turn my head and not read this anymore, and lately, I just check back once a week now when it used to be daily or 3 times a day. Is the market that dead? Has all the info on how to get better shots from 10D been exhausted? Or, we are all experts now and have nothing to share except ask questions about lenses?!

Bombs awayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

maybe it is, but for a newbie like myself I like the interaction that you veterans give.

You guys have no idea how much these threads piss me off.

The reason this happens is because the search feature on forums of any kind is slow, and not all that accurate.

Furthermore if i ask "what is canons best lens" this week, it will be differnt last week.

If you do not like to see threads that come up alot then make your own forum and enjoy the deadness...furthermore, if you do not apreciate obtaining the knowledge then sharing it in the future, then you need to find a better hobby.

I've learned so much on these forums...that first post thing is great and i enjoy doing it on all forums i've been a part of for over 6 months, it's a fantastic way to keep yourself in check.

So the next time someone posts "what is with all these numbers on my lens"

I'd be glad to share.

Hmmm...someone that has made better than 550 posts in 3 months is wild! CDS and RFMSports and a few others excepted. It took me better then 8 months to get that far. I have only cracked 600 in the last week or 2. I have made a few outlandish posts here and there, like most of us. I truly want to be able to pass on the info I have but some of this stuff was like me and Concorde back in the day. We were long past beating the long dead horse. We know Gitzo is still alive and I wouldn't be that mean to him at any rate. We all have our fun but some stuff is long past old hat.

Brethren:

When a newbie asks a question that has been discussed time and time again (ad nauseum), do not treat him bruskly; do not rebuke him nor be surly. :!:

Instead, pat him on his tapered little head and point out that nearly everyone in this forum has asked a similar question at one time or another; questions like his show great prescience. Then explain the search engine and what keywords he might use to find the topic in question. :D

Remember: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you make an enemy of his wife forever.

We can't always be profound every time we put up a post. There is a lot of good-natured give and take here, and I recognize that you've been in the middle of a lot of it. You are inescapably ‘one of us.’

Consider this: Just as opposable thumbs make man superior to other primates, the prevailing sense of humor in this forum is what separates us from most of the others. Sometimes a one word or two word response is all that's necessary to convey a point or an attitude. Sometimes, just an emoticon is all the communication that's appropriate.

The truth is, nobody has more posts with less content than I. This is not a matter of pride to me---quite the opposite; but then, I have more time on my hands than most of you. I believe the number of posts is useful only as a reference which might be helpful to newer members in determining who the old farts are in this 'club.' Beyond that, it’s a totally meaningless statistic.

Thos.

Sorry if I was too subtle there. That question about the TC was a joke. Thanks for the info anyways, I appreciate it.

What I ENJOY the most, is how you end up not taking your selves to serious. You help out all of us newcommers, with sound advise, and then you make us feel comfortable by sharing your mistakes also. Like leaving your camera at home, or forgetting your CF. Sharing your worst moments, when your kids have taken the camera and played with it, or when an L falls off your car seat. I for one APPLAUD you and thank you for all of your GREAT ADVISE and your wonderful Banter. I hope to one day be like you and have something wonderful and intelligent to say.

Well, this has turned more and more "interesting"

You know in all my numerous long winded posts,. I think you could take the whole lot of them, pulverize them into little bits and sift through them for a week.. and you would not find that there is a single one that is a complaint directed at anyone in particular or at this forum in general. (though I may have lost my "cool" towards those who have :( )

My guess is that if I had any unbearable complaint about this forum,. I would have simply spent less time posting and interacting with the fantastic people here. That would be my loss,. and I indentify it as such,. thus I stay and partake.

I guess what I'm saying is,. why take the time to get worked up over such a thing? Either read and post or don't. No pressure.. no arm's twisted.

If you have a personal problem wih someone,. PM them them and try to work it out,.. or avoid them.

If you have a problem with the forum in general PM a moderator or Admin and offer suggestions. (if you have any)

It is allways easy to profer a complaint in public and look for reassurance and company in your outcry. What is difficult,. is identifying a solution to your complaint.

Personally,. I can't find a thing to complain about. When I log on,. I do it with the express purpose of having fun,. and sharing Ideas and most importantly,. sharing our love of photgraphy. With that attitude it never fails that browsing the "posts since last visit" is a joy for me.

Let's keep it fun. That's what it's all about.

:)

Are you kidding? The profundity simply exudes from every ASCII character I've ever entered here. I've NEVER made a stupid post! Why don't you guys start an "old-pro-snob-guys-room (not for dumb people or questions)" and make it an exclusive membership. Like, only people with 100 or 500 or more posts can get in, and then if somebody asks a question you don't like, you can kick them out of the club by voting them out. It would be really cool.

I'm glad to see everything back to tongue and cheek...

I'd just like to remind everyone that a "newbie" posting a question looking for an answer from someone with a bit more experience on the subject is EXACTLY what this forum is for.

It is the number 1 reason to have a discussion group for specific hardware.

In the end,. every question is a "newbie" question to the individual who can answer it. And it all happens at different levels. I posted a question yesterday,. a question that in hindsite is pretty inane. People took the time to answer none the less.. and I am greatfull for it.

Soon ,. I will have loads of new questions.. and I hope there are a few 1D 1Ds owners who hit this forum who will be able to help me along with them.

If I ever get started in studio/portrait work,. Look out!
Tons of questions!!!,. strobes,. back drops etc.. To the seasoned pro,. I will be a complete and pathetic newb asking the same old questions.

Yes I can look stuff up,. and I will,. but I will certainly want to ask questions that I think are specific to my own situation,. (and I'll propbably be wrong,.. they will be generic to anyone who allready knows better)

....and I will also wish to have direct answers from the members of this forum whom I know excel at the type of work (Charles,. you'll be there for me right?)

(Certainly if I ever shoot motorsports I'll want input from RFM and Indy;.. Deer and Donkeys or Duck butts?? i'll check in with Ian,... The Acela?? Belmondo of course.. If the concorde is my Subject matter I'll consult Canuck,. etc.. )

Next time anyone feels the need to let off steam in the public froum,. I ask that they ask themselves these two questions before posting.

Why is this forum here?
Why are you here?

Faber-Castell 9000 HB Classic Pencil "L" IS

Faber-Castell Duel Size Sharpener
Faber-Castell 9200 Series Pencil "L" IS **ON ORDER**

Ferdinand,

This has been driving me crazy, but I didn't want to trouble your day with a newbie question. So I checked the net and found to my surprise and delight:

THE CASTELL 9000...."certainly the world’s most famous pencil. Brought onto the market by Alexander Graf von Faber-Castell in 1905, its quality and finely graded hardnesses have made it a favourite tool for artists and draughtsmen.

The spread of this pencil also contributed to dark green succeeding in becoming the company colour for the Faber-Castell brand. It is coated with environmentally compatible water-based paint, a technology which Faber-Castell was the first manufacturer to introduce. Its lead is completely glued together with the wooden shaft , making it especially resilient."

Good to finally see that your inpsiration and wisdom draws from such a rich heritage. I've always said ... keep good lead in your pencil.

A very belated welcome to the group - you truly belong here. :)

Ahh, FB pencils.

When I used to work on the forecasting bench we used to use FB's excellent 6B for drawing up charts (sticking on the isobars) for our own use. Never a better pencil made.

I remember the day that the company said they were changing stationary supplier and that FB products would be no longer available and we would have to choose from the new stationary catalogue. I distictly remember the outcry from RAF, Army and Navy air stations throughout the UK and abroad.

In the end we all bought our own stock. I still have maybe 40 or so of the 6B's and maybe another 20 or so 4B's.

I remember the days.......

Cheers
