View Full Version : Taking digi pics of wind blowing whirligig - action stops!

Can someone please tell me how I can do this? I want a very blurred picture of the wind effects on a whirligig and the camera in auto mode shows just a small blur...although the object is spinning rapidly.

I tried Motion mode and it stops all the action entirely.

I have a Canon A60.

I also have an A60. Put it in TV or Manual and make it a long exposure.

Set the A60 to Tv mode and set the shutter speed to 1/60 for starters and see what you get. If you want more blur, set it down to 1/45 and try again. If you go any lower than that, you may need to use a tripod. If you are shooting this out in the sunlight, you may have a hard time getting the camera to stop down to the correct aperture for the slower shutter speeds. Setting the ISO to the lowest will help some.

whoops - thought I could just say thank you on subject line.

Is it usual to thank folks for help? I do on other forums.

Thank you both, Leo and Mike. Will try this - haven't used TV mode yet, nor Manual, nor have I ever changed a shutter speed...I confess I am just beginning to get out of auto mode.

You're very welcome, Cordy. And, yes, it is ok to thank people around here although they would much rather prefer a charitable contribution to their very own "help me get my 1D MKII camera" fund.

BTW, refer to page 91 of your camera manual on how to set your camera for Tv shooting. And if you want to try shooting in "M" look in page 96.

Good luck.

I would be glad to take cash or check.

Okay, good...

Now about that donation to your camera fund...hmmm! This would really break the bank account I'm saving for my tripod. I have a little tiny tripod...and the A60 won't take a remote shutter release which is very frustrating. I wonder how others get around this?

Thanks for sending page numbers - boy, you are REALLY helpful. If it doesn't pour rain tomorrow, I will take a deep breath and get out of Auto Mode.

Cash or cheque? Do you accept Coke cans, in lieu of?

I really do appreciate such rapid responses.

One way to get around it is that you can put the timer (2 seconds or 10 seconds ) on and that is a kind of shutter release. Page 83. That should give you enough time to take your hands off of the camera to keep it from moving.

Once you get out of auto mode you will never (or hardly) ever look back. So much more can be down in the other modes. It's nice to have total control. :D

Thank you for page 83 pointer (ahhh, so THAT is how/when to apply it.)

And, on daring to leave home/auto mode - I have one pair of glasses to see printed page of instructions, a different pair to see digi settiings, and another pair for distance (none of which work for distance to my monitor.)

I have been delighted with the results of auto mode - so delighted, right up until NOW. The idea of it getting even better is a very exciting thought.

I shall be very busy...just as soon as the wind comes back to my corner of British Columbia. We've had days of it...and now not a bit.

While using the shutter speed mode, try switching on the flash, this will 'freeze' the whirly gig, and the long shutter speed will add in the blur. You may need to use manual and lower the flash output to get a subtle 'freeze' if need be.

Have fun!

Thank you, have printed, will try - everything!

Still no wind.
