View Full Version : How's my equip. list? Want to take advantage of rebates....

With the rebate most likely ending in 20 days, I want to be sure I've got everything I need, at least for now. My question to you all is, what would you add (or subtract) from this lineup? I use a 10D. :-)

50/1.4
100/2
18-50/2.8 (Sigma)
70-200/2.8 IS

Secondly, another idea I've been tossing around is to get a 5D. This would mean no new lens. Would I still be okay with the lenses I've got? I wouldn't get rid of the 10D, I'd use both.

I just really want to step it up and I don't want my lack of equipment to be a deal-breaker. At this point, I am not restricting myself to any one type of concert, so in essence I would need to be prepared for just about anything.... So far I've done anything from smaller local bar scenes to larger arena-type venues. And everything in-between.

Thanks for any advice.
Cheers!
Jennifer

Not sure how comfortable I'd be shooting at ISO 1600 with the 10D. I'd probably head towards a 5D before a new lens...

not sure about the sigma 18-50, but the other 3 lenses should work on the 5D.

What lenses dou you have now? If there are some serious gaps in your lens line up (sounds like it, since you want the 50, 100 and 70-200L), I'd rather get part of the lenses and a 20D. As Steve mentioned, ISO 1600 on a 10D isn't all that great. Same goes for AF, buffer rate, startup time... I used to shoot one before my 1D2, but if in your shoes (when short on lenses), I'ld get some glass and a 20D...

Hello,

Thanks for your responses so far. I guess I should have been a little more clear, but that list of lenses is what I already have.

With the 10D, I tend to stay at iso800 because of the grain at 1600.

Thanks again!

Cheers!

Aha.
In that case: You need something wider I'd think. A 5D would give all lenses a wider FoV and gain you around a stop in shutterspeed... ;)

(actually 2 stops, since ISO3200 seems quite usable, but you need to stop down further, since DoF will be less)

Otherwise, an EF 28/1.8, Sigma 30/1.4 (about 50mm FoV eq.) and Sigma 20/1.8 (about 35mm FoV eq.) are likely candidates IMO.
If you get a 5D, I'ld still get a (28/1.8 or) 35/2.0, but that's because I like a 35mm FoV...

jennifer, if you are ever @ a show i'm shooting, you are welcome to try out my sigma 30 f/1.4 for a few shots.

Narlus,

THANK YOU. Are you going to the God Forbid/Byzantine show at the ME? I am thinking about heading up for it. Let me know! :-)

Cheers!

wasn't on my radar screen. i'll probably @ PA's tomorrow for the mv/ee + bummer road show, but am not expecting much in the way of photos there. i'll definitely be @ teh Akron/Family show as well, in mid-Feb, and there's a decent chance i will shoot the Converge show.

RD,

Your advice was exactly what I was looking/hoping for. I've just done a bit of research and then some more research. I am thinking that for right now I'll go try out that EF 28/1.8 with the idea that when I go to a FF, I'll still be able to use it, but it can still come in handy now. And I'll try out the 30/1.4 when I see Narlus around....

Pink will be in town next week, so that will be the perfect time to make sure I'm covered. Lots of practicing this weekend. :-)

I wouldn't object to more opinions - keep 'em coming. Thanks again.

Cheers!

Because you get double rebates when you buy the 5D this gets you an extra $600 on the body alone. I don't think there will be a much better deal to upgrade your body. You can't shoot good low light with out two things...

Fast Glass and Good Quality at 1600 ISO.......
