View Full Version : Photo of yourself at a wedding

Seeing some of these behind the scenes shots that you guys are posting makes me want to see more of the photographer.

Post a picture of yourself at a wedding if you have it. In your "wedding outfit". I am also curious to see how others dress.

Yes, that's my old trusted 20-35/2.8L (same age as my old 80-200/2.8L that's now being replaced by the new and gorgeous 70-200/2.8L IS). I love that 20-35 lens and I won't get rid of it even if I've bought the 17-55/2.8 IS.

Pretty standard boring fare. Nice casual pants and a collared shirt:

Loose-ish pants are nice so you can fit other gear in your pockets...however dumb it may look. I had another pocketwizard and L-358 in my pockets at the time. I've thought of one of those photo vests but I dunno, I guess they just don't suit my fashion sense... and they're too hot on a summer day.

I'll have to find the pic but at one of my last weddings, my 2nd shooter and I got a tad bored so we made a deal. Whoever took the most unflattering picture of the other had to buy dinner. I won, I just kept the camera around my neck and let it sit on my gut and just shot up.

I've found the same as you. Not very effective outside, but that didn't surprise me. It doesn't really enlarge the light source. It's somewhat nice to use indoors with low ceilings. I have heard it has some major underexposure problems when facing straight on and using a lens that reports distance data.

Hey Lloyd,
Yeah we have "logowear" and two different colors... white on hot days and black on the cooler days. We have jackets, sweaters, etc.... it's kinda neat. I got it all free for doing a job for a guy who owns a local shop!! Hook Up!!

I'm just lazy and don't remove the Stofen's while shooting outdoors, if I remove them I'll just forget them somewhere. But I don't see any problems with them, as in worse images using it.

In very bright daylight it hardly look like I'm using flash at all, such as this:

http://petrahall.se/brudpar/cecilia_mattias/images/151631G.jpg

While in lower light outdoors (this is in the afternoon in february) it looks more artificial of course, but I'm not sure it would have helped with or without the Stofen.

They are really nice. My diffuser arrived just this morning. I am sick of "hot spots" and wanted to soften the overall flash lighting. I have a wedding on the 10th and can't wait to see if I notice a difference after shooting 8 previous weddings without one.

That's the key I think (or at least what I am striving for) to produce outdoor images in medium to bright level sunlight with no noticable flash. The trick is to not have any dark shadows under the eyes or around the face - an overall even lighting...you have clearly succeeded in your images. Well done :)

Mmmm that's the thing. There is really no set way to tell if it does use more battery power or not - and as you say, if the images turn out better...today is a very bright sunny day - at around 2pm I may take my kids down the beach and try with and without and see if there is any noticable difference....might be a worthy experiment!

I wouldn't agree, I have plenty power left. Although I've seen photographers using the bouncer on a 45° angle, and *that* is really a waste of battery power. The flash has to point forward and only be used within a distance where the flash actually *will* fill shadows and give a bit of a keylight in the eyes. :D

Actually, using it at 45 degress would make little difference.

The omnibounce has roughly the same effect as a bare bulb strobe, meaning light is spread in all directions from the flash (not just straight forward).

I have done some tests with omnibounce vs. direct flash for fill and really can't see any difference, except that the flash has to pump harder to compensate for the light loss.

Anyway, back to the photos. Sorry ;-)

The manufacturers instructions specify use at 45º - so unless they have shares in all the major battery companies, I reckon they would know best how to use their product. ;)

I would have to agree w/ linarm that putting the flash at 45 deg is useless and that it will drain the batteries faster. You can see this by timing the recycle duration between flashes. Its much longer w/ the flash at 45 deg then straight on. But I still prefer to have the stofen on to soften the flash.

CyberPet
31st of January 2007 (Wed), 22:19
Indoors yes, but not outdoors. At least that's what I do... I use it 45° indoors while outdoors I just angle the flash straight forward. But then again, I could remove the diffuser too, but then we're back to my second post about losing it, forgetting where I put it, etc. :D

mizuno

Indoors I find it much nicer to bounce flash off the ceiling or walls.

Actually that's not what I said at all ... I said that in terms of light loss 45 degrees shouldn't be any different ... and mizuno added (as I forgot to) that the omnibounce is designed to work best at 45 degrees. If your camera-to-subject distance is fairly long tho, I guess you'd lose a bit of light by angling the flash up ... just the trigonometry of the light source.

But if it's about not losing your OmniBounce ... well, fair enough!!

At least my FlipIts can fold back against the flash when not in use ;-)

I don't personally like it that much. Too much distortion, and dark clothing, with bright sky behind made it difficult

I know Simple viewer has some issues, and in a couple of years, when I go full time pro, I'll pay someone to do my site, and make it look fab. For now, I'm incredibly busy with other stuff, and don't have the time to change anything.

A couple more. The first one was before I sold the old faithful Sigma for my Canon IS 70-200. The second one is a shoot in New Zealand (not a wedding though).

Where is that, Huka Falls?

Where is that, Huka Falls?

It is on the way to the glaciers on the south island - Hast's Gates or something like that - you have to cross one of those crazy one lane bridges spanning a raging river - I climbed down the rocks and shot the river from underneith the bridge. I photographed a conference/convention in Queenstown and then spent 5 days touring a little and wound up producing a DVD called 10 Days in New Zealand.

Well, the only one I can dig up is with me with a local radio show host. I knew who she was because I've met her before, but nobody else seemed to know. Her voice is an unusual raspy kinda voice and everybody there was like "Where do I know her from?"

She was a friend of the bride so she DJ'ed it, and did a good job too.

Found a couple more:

First, the bride's cousin and makeup artist. Asked for a dance at the end of the night (there's a long story here) and the bride's father grabbed my camera and took the photo:

Second, the groom came over at the end of the night and wanted a picture of me with him, I had a wide angle lens on at the time so...

Only two I could find. Not that big on my photo being taken (as you can tell by these pics)

This pic was a wedding in Nov. and my assistant caught me walking with some of the bridal party down to the docks at the reception site. I always wear black. (it's me on the far right side giving the evil eye)

And this is a pic from behind. My hubby came as an assistant and he snapped this pic after I had taken some through this wreath thingy and moved to the other side. That's all I got!

btw jessiper I wasn't wearing a cap or headband or anything. My hair is really short so I suppose it could look like cap from a distance.

forgot to ask, what lens was that you were using? quite funky hood ;)
