This is my next lens in my lens hit list. Can users of this lens post good/bad points on this particular lens. I want to know if this lens is worth the price.
I'm not ready for "L" yet even tho there are a few in my price range. All comments welcome.
Canon Telephoto EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens $329.95

This is an outstanding lens. In the film world it is the perfect focal length for portraits. With the crop factor it becomes like a 135mm, which is on the long end for a portrait lens. But it is worth having. I used it last week in a theater environment, and it gave me the speed I needed to get decent shutter speeds. When you look through it, you'll see more 'pop' than you'll get from any zoom lens. I love it :!:

I just got this lens and it is everything everyone says it is. I recommend it... definately a must have. AF is fast and the f1.8 is great. As someone once said... probably as close to the "L" glass as you can get without paying the "L" price. Worth the price? Oh yeah!!!
Here's a photo I took using the lens this past weekend.

Nice target for the hit list. I highly doubt that you'll regret it. As I've mentioned elevendygazillion times, this is my very favorite prime. I think there's only one other lens in the world with prettier bokeh, and that's the 85 1.2L. The 85 1.8 is most definately a solid keeper.

This is a wonderful lense. I find it is on my camera more than any other. Most of the time I am walking my dog and taking her picture, and the 85mm seems to be the perfect length for this task. This is my only USM type lense, I am impressed with it.

I just picked up one of these a few days ago, and I'm really anxious to give it a workout. If it's anywhere near the quality I'm hearing, it should be a great lens.
With the 1.3X crop of the Mk II, it should be an ideal portrait lens.

The 85mm f1.8 is the single best piece of non L glass canon makes by far. You'd have a hell of a fight on your hands if you tried to take mine away. It's light weight, fast and so sharp that you'll cut yourself on the pictures if you aren't careful. The Bokeh is smooth and creamy. This lens truly has no flaws.
The 85mm f1.2L is a better lens but the price and the weight are tough to justify for most mere mortals.
You'll be thrilled with this lens. Trust me.

Thanks to this lovely forum and for being a late comer into the photography world, I have a chance to at least got through all your discussions and I have my own hit list to hit now :)
The only good lens I have own so far is the 50mm f1.8 which is not a L :P
So my first L is going to be the 70-200mm f2.8 L IS USM.
Second will be the 17-35mm f/2.8L USM since it gives a nicer quality picture than the 16-35mm f/2.8 USM from all the reviews I read.
And that should conclude my lens buying for a long while :)

Ferdinand

Interesting choices. The 70-200 f/2.8L IS is a marvelous lens. Are you talking about the 17-40L as your second choice? That is a very popular lens, and the combination of the two is pretty common.
You might also want to consider the 24-70L----my favorite.

HAH! Anyone wanna take bets on that one? ;)
I just got the 17-40 and it's awesome! Absolutely love it. The perfect WA for the 1.6x (APS) sized sensors. I didn't realize how much I missed WA until I got this lens.

Yes Tom but after doing some research I am now a speed demon! So I would rather go for the one with the f2.8 :D The 17-35mm f/2.8L USM. I know the 17-40mm, from what I read has sharper image but its f4.0 and I am sure I can probably get close to the same qualith at f4.0.

You will absolutely love the 85mm 1.8. What a great lens. I don't know why it doesn't have the red stripe....

haha! no shame... the mk II is a great little lens. the mk I just feels and acts like all the other canon lenses.
Most everyone I know who went ahead and dropped the extra bucks to get the mk I never regretted it. And the ones who bought the mk II seem to be completely happy and satisfied. I guess it would depend on how much you intend to use it.

I understand that. Believe me, if owning L glass were the mark of greatness I'd be a god. I've gone through some religious awakening or something as of late and have really had a shift in my entire photographic outlook. L glass is the best in the world. No doubt about that in my eyes. The thing is... the result of your L glass begins with the knowlege and creativity of your mind. You need the "L - mind" first, L glass second. No matter how wonderful the lens, it will not save you from disastrous shots if you are prone to make them. Convert ye brethren to the Spirit of the L then ye will truly become one with the Glass of the L.
Catch my weekly TV infomercial to learn all my secrets of the Spirit (after agreeing to 400 easy payments of only $19.95).
/subliminal message: I am the mk I.. you want to bid on me.. seek me out.. I am the true 50mm 1.8..

Not really... I want something to replace my EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM which I totally loathe, other than that I am content.
