View Full Version : Sub-category for EOS cameras?

If this has been suggested before, I apologize but would it be possible to further break down the EOS digital camera forum? It moves so quickly I have a hard time keeping up (coming from a guy who spends all day on his computer). In a single day there can be three pages of new posts. Maybe a Rebel and D series split?

I just realized that the Rebel series is actually part of the D series so maybe my original post sounded a bit odd, but there seems to be a somewhat clear distinction between the Rebels and the rest of the series such as the 5D, 10D, etc.

There really isn't athat much difference. Most threads can be (and are) answered by people with a variety of equipment. The basic settings for all the cameras are very similar; the only real difference is how fiddly it is to make those settings. And if you think that forum moves fast, you haven't tried to keep up with the EF Lenses forum.

The folks on here offer great advice that can be used with just about any canon dslr you have. There's lots to learn, and this forum is one of the best ways to do so... aside from experience

I agree with edisonian...

I think there should be subs for the camera types. Granted I may be able to answer a question on a Rebel but when i'm looking for 1dsmkII posts having them co mingled is a pain.

I would say:

PS cameras
REBEL series
D Series (20d 30d 5d)
1D series (pro)

Jon I think you miss the point... granted settings can be similar but then again you could say that for all of the cameras. I feel that one of the strong points of that section is pre-purchase information from users to other users... frankly I don't want to talk about an XTi if I'm looking into a 5D or a 1DMkII. I certainly think there is enough traffic on the sub topics to warrant sub-forums.

It sounds like a good Idea but I like it how it is personally.

The list of forums here is already quite ungainly; to add more, and in order for us to be able to manage them, we'd have to do away with some existing fora. As it is, we have a fair number of threads posted in the "wrong" forum and requiring attention. That also takes up time everyone could be spending more profitably. I'll further point out, again, that EOS is nowhere as busy as EF lenses. If you're looking for information on a specific camera, well, there's always Search. And then there are the people who start looking for one camera and end up going for another, or who post comparison threads. What about them? A "General" EOS forum and subfora for different models? It sounds so simple, but the devil's in the details.

Jon you seriously think that 6 equipment topics (as it is now) is "ungainly"? Is there some hard and fast rule that says you can only have so many topics in the forum? Not likely. We have "Birds" - wouldn't that fit under "Nature and Animals"? I mean you could use the search after all. Then there is "Motorsports" which was under "Sports"... You could have 4 topics or four hundred and you would certainly have posts in the wrong topics.

If you have some metric to measure when a topic is due for a break out that's cool by me but the reasons you stated other than traffic level are pretty thin. Maybe There should be sub-topics for the EF lens section. I agree the devil is in the details but if we really wanted to simplify it it would just be "CANON" - and everything could be a search... oh wait that's Google  :)

Traffic is the main deciding factor for creation of new forums. In my opinion there is not enough traffic for each of the subforums to warrant the split. And no there is no hard rule for when to split it is a judgement call made ultimately by Pekka.

The motorsports and bird forums were created when the majority of posts in their former main forum was so huge that everything else got lost. When that happens then it is time to split.

Just for fun I looked at the first page of the EOS forum and put the threads in the above suggested 4 categories. (Numbers are approx.)

Rebel: 8
D: 15
Pro: 0

General: 10
Posted in wrong forum: 2

I don't think those numbers (yes not very scientific or accurate) warrant a split.

I'm not counting just the 6 Equipment forums. There are also 14 "Photo Sharing", 7 "Sharing Knowhow", 3 "Marketplace" and the Exhibit Engines and Rumours and this. That's over 30 fora we need to deal with, including chasing down runaway spammers. Birds was broken out because of a consistent swamping of the Nature forum with bird shots (posts weren't staying on p. 1 long enough to get commented on); Motor Sport was broken out likewise, and we actually ended up merging a couple of less-active areas to get that done without letting the total number get out of hand. And believe me, there was a lot of agitation for those two to happen; it wasn't until there was a lot of demonstrated legitimate activity, as well as a reasonable plan of action, that Pekka agreed to the reconfiguration. Right now, EOS has posts going back 10 hours on the first page; EF Lenses has only 2 hours worth of action on p. 1; People has 4 hours worth, and that's despite separate forums for G&N or Urban Life.

I believe it's only in the USA/Canada that there is a 'Rebel', (Does Japan have the 'Kiss' or something stupid?)

The only 'split' I could think of would be for users of that age-old thing called film :-) but I know that's been discussed here before...
