I just got a 50mm 1.8 and i was reading the paper work and it says
"We strongly recommend the use of a lens hood" I would like to know what you use for this lens.

I got the lens hood for this and just about always use it. It kinda stinks to buy a $23 hood for a $70 lens, but I definitely believe in hoods. The hood is kinda funky since you screw on an adapter and then clip the adapter to the lens.

I almost always use lens hoods on any lens, except sometimes with extreme wide-angles becasue it can cause vignetting.

I can see this with the EOS3, but will the correct lens hood still cause vignetting with a 10D? I would think that the 1.6 crop would remove the vignetting potential. Just guessing, though.

IMHO, the lens hood is worth having, although the front element on the 50mm f/1.8 is already somewhat recessed.

If it's any consolation, Canon doesn't include one on the much more expensive f/1.4 either, but if you can find the 50mm f/1.0 (out of production), it comes with a lens hood. I just sold mine for $1,700.00.

I've purchased/ordered lens hoods for all my most used lenses, so I'm a believer.

You sold your 50mm f1.0 !?!?!?! Sacrilege!! Why?!? That lens is amazing! Good price too! those things are rarer than hens teeth.

I think that is to prep for a 1D MkII, correct, yes?

I make a point of getting a lens hood for every one of MY lenses. A hood will also help with keeping contrast in certain sittuations.
Speaking of lens hoods, does anyone know where I might find one for the older 50mm lens?

I may be going against the grain, but IMO the front element of the 50/1.8 is highly recessed. So, I don't have the hood for it. OTOH, I do have a hood for my 17-40, a EW-83DII to replace the standard, useless EW-83E.

Oh yeah!

It was really being wasted sitting here. I couldn't think of a singe use for it other than as a paperweight, or for one of my stupid '4-way' comparisons.

I expect to get much more useage from the Mk II.

Would one of those collapsible rubber lens hoods be good enough for the 50mm 1.8?

That is why i was thinking of a collapsible rubber hood.
Cheap and portable.

Get one of those funky screw on metal hoods. Gives the lens some "size".

The correct lens hood for the 50mm f1.8 Mark II is the ES-62 Lens Hood with the 62-L adapter. I just bought it yesterday at San Jose Camera.

Didn't believe in lens hood until I started getting funky looking lights in my pictures :P
