Looking to see what everyone around here likes to use...
I just orderd that Canon handstrap for my 20D + grip... I figure I buy it since I wanted to try it out. Seems to be more comfortable when using larger lenses...
What do you like...
Neckstrap, Handstrap, or Both attached to the camrea?
Im going to have to say both for myself, when I dont want to constantly hold the camrea, the neck strap is great, but for longer tele lenses, and holding it all day, the handstrap seems to be a lot more comfortable.

I've always had the Canon handstrap attached to my camera(s). I couldn't be without it.
As to the neckstrap, I never used it until I dropped my camera a couple of years ago. Since then, I place the neckstrap around my neck before I completely remove the camera from my bag, and keep it on until I place it back in the bag.
BOTH.

Can I vote 'shoulder strap'?
(the old fashioned 1" wide Canon kind. I never could get to like the wide ones)
I *never* carry my camera around my neck...
Positively hate the E1 handstrap on other photographers cameras, but that might be because of different 'setting'. I have quite long fingers, so need a bit freedom of hand movement. Never felt compelled to try though.

POTN neck strap. Support your forum boys and girls! And the strap is amazing! ;)

I have both...But I get a kick out of the people that go off on tangents about how a "professional" photographer would never be caught dead with a neckstrap actually around their neck.

POTN neck strap! We need to support our Forum. Hand strap, I asked months ago when it was coming out. I am still waiting! :(

Well ordered a POTN strap finally.
Joe I would suggest making a thread for people to sign up if the would like a POTN hand strap you would need around 50 names because that is how many Phil needs to make the custom order.

in the summer, i use both at the same time. however, i take off the hand strap in the winter because i shoot with gloves which makes it a bit uncomfortable.

let those people shoot wildlife with out the strap. i when i have the strap on, i allow myself to climb and do things that i couldn't do without having the camera secure to my body.

I have a neckstrap on my camera but don't use it as one. I wrap it around my wrist for stability. Does the handstrap allow you to switch between horizontal and vertical easily? The handstrap sounds good but only if I can switch easily.

Where's the option to vote for neither? ;)
If I do use my P.O.T.N. strap it's only so that I can sling the camera over a shoulder... I almost never put the strap around my neck, since I find that it hinders more than it helps.

I use both. The hand strap just gives that extra bit of security, though it can be a bit of a nuisance too.

I have a hand strap for my 30D but find it makes it very awkward to use the front dial and that is no good if shooting in M, A or T modes, or wanting to change other parameters. So I'm back to using the Canon neck strap, Slingshot AW200 backpack or nothing.

I use the neckstrap as i like to sling my camera down to my right hand side when walking about. Not tried the handstrap yet.

POTN neckstrap. Mostly I use it as a shoulder strap.

Both, but I agree it's a bit of a bother when using the dial. But just a bit. The comfort and security are worth that relatively minor inconvenience.

Both... I always keep the "neck" strap around my neck or over a shoulder unless the camera is in the bag or on a tripod. The hand strap is fantastic for controlling the camera.

both
E1 handstrap and POTN neck strap
Aye. Same. Both cameras too.
The great thing about the POTN strap is that you can remove the neckstrap part when you don't need it and just buckle the hanging loops together.

This is exactly what I do and I have the same questions. I can't hang that thing around my neck.

Another observation. It is true that the handstrap can at times limit your freedom of movement when needing to make exposure adjustments, but you can always loosen the strap a little more to mitigate that. I've loosened mine to the point where I can comfortably make aperture adjustments, etc., but still have the handstrap function in the way that it was designed to do. Sometimes if my hand isn't already inside the handstrap and I'm going for a critical shot, I find it quite easy and unobtrusive to simply put my hand over the handstrap and shoot away.

Oh absolutely! At least for me it is anyway. I find myself constantly rotating from "landscape" to "portrait" mode using the handstrap.
Of course, if you prefer to use the vertical shutter release (battery grip and 1 series users), then using the handstrap becomes a burden. And I don't use the vertical shutter release. ;)

I couldn't live w/o the hand strap. As far as the neck strap goes I purchased a POTN one to support the forum but don't use it. The 500 f/4 rarely comes off and the strap gets caught on things too easily.

My preference is the hand strap with my LowePro SlingShot 300AW. The camera is in the pack on my back until I'm actually shooting.

I'd vote for neither also. I have a P.O.T.N. strap which I don't ever use. I found that it is way too short for me. I bought a Tamrac strap that is usually hanging down from my camera. I have the battery grip and tend to just carry my camera in my hand. I've (I know I shouldn't say this :lol:, but) never dropped my camera. I tend to use the strap more as a shoulder strap also.
This may sound strange, but I've have a major chronic pain problem and cannot stand to have that strap around my neck. I'm not supposed to lift more than 8 pounds (gallon of milk) and I'm not to carry any weight at all. But I can handle my dRebel with a grip just fine if it's in my hand. Kind of wierd but thank goodness for small wonders!
So....after all that, my vote goes for neither.

Handstrap only, but the eBay third party ones that can also be secured around ones wrist are much better than the Canon version. I have never even taken a neckstrap out of its bag let alone used one. But If I am shooting the camera is in my hand or at my side and if not then it is in my bag. I prefer not being noticed with a camera around my neck or overtly on show ... partly so I am freer to shoot but also because of safety. Choice would depend how and where one shoots, so I understand why Snir would prefer a neckstrap.

I've gone from using just the neck strap to naked to hand strap to hand strap + neck strap. In the beginning, the next strap got in the way most of the time. So off it went. Later on I got the grip and tried the E1 handstrap as insurance since strapless was a bit risky. Then tried it with the neck strap, but this time attaching it by the slots used by the hand strap. This allows it to fall naturally off to one side, so it doesn't get in the way when shooting.

My one problem with the Canon neck strap is that when I am shooting vertical it falls in front of the view finder.

Try to attach the strap to the attachment next to the release and the one on the bottom of the grip...

So I think I'm going to give the handstrap a try. Does anyone have any suggestions for a Canon 5D?
(Oh, I'm not using a battery grip right now.)
Mark_Cohran

Both, definitely, for me. For the 5D you need the grip to use the E-1 Handstrap (though, I think there is a device that screws into the tripod socket that allows you to use it).

I've got really big hands. I use the handstrap mostly to bulk up the grip. I occasionally use it too. Neck strap for sure but with quick releases.

I've tried the Canon handstrap, and wasn't too big a fan of it. I guess I just like the camera strap around my neck.

Neither would be the most accurate answer for me as I really use the UP-Strap as a shoulder strap. It works really well and adjusting per their instructions, it is a tension device that steadies the camera. http://www.upstrap-pro.com/ I have the new model with quick release which is great for working on a tripod.
