I made a selection using COlor Range. Since it wasn't perfect I used the lasso and wand to add and subtract parts of the selection. When done, I made a new layer, selcted that layer, and Paint Bucket Filled with Black, no anti-aliasing.
The areas that I used Color Range vary in blackness like the original image. Where I used the lasso or wand it's pure black.
How do I get everything within the selection to pure black?

Probably a simpler way - but this should work:
Create a white layer under your layer with the gray and black pixels. Merge these two layers. Then goto "Levels" and move the left slider all the way to the right. That should blacken all the non white pixels. Now just select the black pixels by any method that seems convenient and do what you want with them.
Edit: I just realized that I might not have understood what you had done. Did you copy your color range selection to a new layer or did you make a new layer of original the image and apply your selection to that layer? I assumed the former.

I had 2 layers, the original as background and an empty layer. On the background I made the Color Range selection. Then I made the empty layer active and Paint Bucket Filled. The idea was to have a layer that consisted of a solid black shape conforming to the shape of my subject, thus a mask of my subject.
My selection;

My bucket filled selection:

Note that it's not solid black, and that some of the fill went outside the selection. The desired result is to get just the geese solid black.
Also note that I realize there are other ways to do this - I'm looking for a solution to the lack of solid file because I selected using Color Range.

The only way I know of is to either use less fuzziness and the + eye dropper to select more colours, or try adjusting the brightness/contrast of your new layer

When using the color range selection tool you can restrict the area it selects by 'pre-selecting' an area with the lasso tool. Then the color range tool will only work in the area bounded by the lasso.
Play with the fuzzyness slider and use SHIFT+click to select similar colors.
After you save the selection as a mask, use the levels adjustment to drive the greys to black. Use the brush and eraser tools to clean up the mask, painting in black and white.
