View Full Version : My fave Wedding shot - vertical
_Jo_

At most of my weddings, with exceptions, I tend to shoot vertical. In doing so, my external flash (firmly attached to my camera!) if firing gives me uneven light. In some cases this can look great, eg by a window, doorway - anywhere I can "fake" natural light. But in most cases I don't want this uneven light balance. What do you do in these instances? I know there are a veriety of options but am interested in what you do. I work alone - no assistant here! TIA.

These are a bit nicer, but that is definetly the easiert way to solve your problems.

You could also move the flash off camera all together and have it on a light stand and fire it via pocket wizards

I've been using the "flipflash" by Stroboframe for awhile but couldn't use my pocket bouncer by Luminquest. I just bought the "cameraflip" frame where camera NOT flash adjusts and I like it quite a bit more.

I like the sound of the "quick flip" - would it be best for the 30D do you think? I don't have a battery grip - I am constantly amazed at the low battery usage on the 30D!

I had the quick flip and the 30D- the bracket works just fine on that set up. :)

I have a quickflip on he 20d, it works fine for me too. Not too large.
BTW I tend to bounce my flash mostly and that gives better light AND removes the shadows, probably the best answer to the OP. Also the LSPJ II (but you thought flash brackets looked weird).

I have a Custom Brackets JR. Like it, if I have to use one, but I prefer a foamie and rotate the flash.

I have the el-cheapo stroboframe quick flip 350 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=6993&A=details&Q=&sku=52728&is=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation)
I mainly use it so I can use both a 580EX AND a pocketwizard at the same time. Otherwise, I wouldn't know where to mount the pocketwizard.

Have you looked into some kind of diffuser. That'll soften the light quite a bit. The one I use is the Gary Fong Lightsphere II. The good thing about it is that when you mount it on the flash, you have the ablity to shoot normal or vertically and get the same results, all without using a flash bracket. Works pretty well in my opinion, especially if your not wanting to add the extra weight of the bracket. You can find them at his website or at B&H. There made specific for each flash.

The diffuser is cheaper too! Does anyone have pictures that would show the difference between the diffuser and a picture of something using a bracket?

Here's some examples from his website. I'll see if I have some and post them.

If you use a diffuser and a bracket at the same time, I might suggest you consider only the camera flippers. I have one of the StroboFrame (sp?) flash flippers - with a modifier on it, it's a genuine pain to user.
The Newton bracket, on the other hand, is not quite so painful to use. You can see it here (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=224818&is=REG&addedTroughType=search) if you shoot without a battery grip or here (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=225034&is=REG&addedTroughType=search) if you do...

Jo, given my rathers, I would not use a bracket, however, like most who do, I do so out of necessity. I use the Customs Pro Digital-M which is great but it would be even better if it were lighter since my 5D w/battery grip and my 24-105 or 28-70 lens already weighs a considerable amount. :(
