Hey everyone.... I am seriously wanting to get into sports photography as well and I am actually getting my first try at it next week at a minor league hockey game (Fresno Falcons) and I just a had a general question. I've seen some awesome hockey stuff here over the years but I have never seen anyone do a shutter drag image or any panning of a hockey player. Anyone have some examples?? Thanks!!

I think they move too fast to pan. :p You know what I'd like to see moreso than a player pan? I wanna see a head on of a puck! And the lens afterwards.

If a race car can get panned then a hockey player can get panned. With that said, I havent shot hockey.

Heh... we'll see. I guess I could just try it and see how I like the images. If I don't like them *delete* :)

I was only half-serious. But a race car has more area to move so it would be easier to lock on and follow. But anyway. Maybe it's just not a shot people (read: the writers of the checks) like to see?

Definitely. I'd like to see 'em too. So even if you don't like 'em, share first. :D

Will you be shooting through the glass or through a hole in the glass?

Both.... the glass is really clean though... :)

Panning is all about the speed of the subject vs. the distance camera to the subject vs. shutter speed. You have to move the camera fast enough to blur the background at a given shutter speed.

At the speed that hockey players skate, you would have to get pretty close to them to move (pan) the camera fast enough to get BG blur. Certainly worth it to give it a a go. I would if I had the chance.

The cool thing about panning is that even a kit lens can capture great pans.

Regards,
Jeff

I've only shot one NHL game but did pan a bit, not to many good results even though I know the game pretty good, but I was shooting with a film canon rebel with a kit 5.6 70-300. Panning was hard, but not impossible - back then I had no clue what the heck I was doing. I start shooting hockey again (7 years later) next week so probably will change my opinion quick :) I'm guessing kids hockey is easier, being that they don't move as fast as the top stars.

I have two HS games to shoot tonight. I will try a few pans and if they come out good I will post them up as for shutter dragging I refuse to shoot flash at sporting events it is too distracting to the players.

Yeah that would be cool! I meant shutter dragging as in not useing flash, but, I guess that doesn't really make any sense then?? :). Thanks for the feedback!!

I shoot both sports and weddings and each seem to move equally quickly. You'll be a natural! :)

Hmmm, will I'm a sport photog and I'm doing a wedding next week!
I shot one game and the action sure is fast! I am used to horses running past me but nothing compared to a hockey game. Mostly because I was trying to follow the play and it's such a quick paced game. I'll dig up those photos and post a couple.
